Happy Halloween Dear Spark Friends!!!

Thursday, October 31, 2013

I hope you are each having a lovely day.

Not much to report here…I do think I am retaining fluid though…still struggling a bit but the weight is coming off slowly but surely. 84 pounds so far. I have 16 more pounds to go to get to my next big goal of 100 pounds lost by new years.

My wonderful Daddy didn’t want me to have to wait to get my Spark Activity Tracker (I was saving up to get one early next year) so he gave me the money today to order it! I did get it ordered and it is supposed to be here in 5 to 7 days…I am so excited. I have had to “force” myself to workout lately and I believe this is just the motivation I need.

I am still decluttering like mad…I don’t do it for very long each day, but I do it every day…though I am struggling a bit with my living room because one end of it is hubbys and it is piled with mechanic books and old computers! He has promised to do something with it before Thanksgiving.

Ooh hi soon to be tracker friend! Hope you like it. For me it works best on my pocket. I had no luck with it on my shoe. I must walk funny. Decluttering is going on here as well but I have a barn with boxes in it too. Dirty messy due to location and so doing double duty. In winter I focus more inside which needs it. Little storage here so challenging. You can do it. PIles of old computers, oh my.

Near miss

Friday, October 25, 2013

When we left the hospital on Thursday (from Daddys chemo treatment) we saw the fire truck leaving and wondered why they had been at the hospital….well, it was on the news that night….A nurse had been stuck on the staff elevator for 2 hours – right around the corner from our room! We ALWAYS use that staff elevator because I take Daddy up in a wheelchair...he decided to walk Thursday so we took the public elevator! The lady got stuck a few minutes after we got there…it was pure luck that it wasn’t us on that elevator!!!!

Still trying to figure out how much my new furnace is going to cost to run…I’ve figured out that it runs about 4.5 hours a day. So I am estimating from that. Looks like it’s going to be around $200 a month…I hope that is right! I can handle that. Keep your fingers crossed that my math is right!!!! I did sign up for AMP (average monthly payments) today with the power company – not quite as good as fixed payments but there won’t be a huge settlement month either.

My weight loss has slowed tremendously. I am trying to figure out how to get it restarted. The only thing I can think of is that I am drinking more diet soda than usual so I will have to watch that more closely. (I drink it for the caffeine as I hate coffee)

I hope you all have a great weekend!

Kathy, I, too, am glad you and your father weren't stuck in that elevator! Wow, what a close call, though! Life can be funny--not (LOL)!!!

Just a thought with the weight loss stall . . . do you do much strength training? Might want to consider kicking that up a notch, to get the ball rolling so-to-speak. Listen to me (stalled as well); I need to take my own advice!!! Let's pump it up together then! emoticon

Soooo Glad you were not stuck on the elevator. I was stuck in the old one at hubby church once. I found out in about one nano second that I was very claustrophobic. I was screeching get me out of here and hitting buttons and making sure the gate was truly closed. I had no clue that I was before this. I had nightmares of being trapped in all kinds of situations for weeks afterward.

    Kathy,

That wasn't luck that kept you out of that elevator, it was the grace of God! I can only imagine how your dad would have faired in that situation.

I don't anticipate your new furnace costing more than your oil that you had. And the big thing is you don't have to fork out $2,000 every year to have heat, and it will never run out!!!

SP has an article on how diet soda can cause you to gain weight. That was one I ran across, in my pursuit of knowledge and getting my Sparkpoints. It was a really good article. I'm sure you can type in under search, asking if diet soda can cause weight gain. You have a wonderful weekend, too!!!

Be blessed,

Glad you weren't stuck in that elevator, that would be no fun! As far as the furnace goes, if you can take it, set the thermostat a couple of degrees lower, that should help with the running time. Assuming that you aren't already doing that of course.

Get rid of the diet soda!! If you can't stand coffee, drink tea instead... anything but the diet soda!

God was looking out for your Dad when he decided to walk instead of taking the elevator. Being stuck in an elevator would have been a horrible experience!

Kathy, from the sound of it, your exercise routine is pretty much always the same, and if you're like most of us, what you eat is fairly consistent too. So maybe you need to shake things up a bit -- for example NO DIET SODA for a couple of days and see if it makes the scale move.

I love coffee but not without creamer and that adds lots of calories so what I've started doing is drinking 2 cups of coffee first thing in the morning and then switching to Green Tea with truvia after that for the rest of the day. It takes some getting used to but tea (unless it's herbal) has caffeine too. You could make iced tea if you didn't like it hot - just a thought. A couple of years ago I stopped drinking soda and, at the advice of a nurse friend of mine, started drinking SOBE instead. It's pretty good, zero calories and you can get it either at WalMart or Costco. I don't know if Costco is in your area or not but I'm pretty sure WalMart is. SOBE doesn't have caffeine though but it's much better for you than diet soda.

So glad you didn't get stuck in the elevator! Hopefully the hospital will take a look at the other's in the building to make sure everything is OK with them instead of waiting for a problem to occur.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and your heating bill. We use a woodstove for our heat and it's pretty nice. Rod used to be able to cut firewood and built up a pretty big supply, enough to last us several years, before he had to stop because of his back problems. Before marrying Rod I spent too much of my life cold, not being able to afford the heating bills so I know what that's like. It's supposed to be an unusually cold winter this year so you're definitely in my thoughts. emoticon

New furnace and 8 month quit smoking anniversary

Wednesday, October 23, 2013

Well after 31 years of oil heat, I have gone with an electric furnace. I know my electrical bill will go up but now I won’t have to come up with $2000 every fall for oil to fill my tanks. I expect the new furnace to heat the house pretty good. It is a 20kw that stages so it doesn’t use all 20kw every time it turns on.

Here are a few pictures of my new electrical service and furnace

the fellows putting in my electrical and furnace

new breaker box

the furnace - it is hanging from the ceiling because our basement floods

old meter on left - new meter on right - big difference!

Yesterday was also the 8th month anniversary of the day I quit smoking! It is such a huge relief not to be smoking those nasty things. You don’t know until you quit how horrible they smell and how badly they make everything else smell. I can smell a smoker from several feet away…the odor is that strong. I never knew I smelled like that!
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I am at 82 pounds lost and will take new measurements next week.

Well for some reason the pictures are not showing now - they were showing earlier...must be something on SparkPeoples end ....edit = they are back now

Congrats on the smoking anniversary! Don't ever go back!!! I had quit when I was pregnant with both my kids, but always went back to it. Then I finally quit for good 12 years ago. Best thing I've ever done for my health, but hardest thing I've ever HAD to do, too. I'll never want to go through that again. So again, kudos to you!!!

I'm an ex smoker too and I'm amazed at how awful I find the smell these days. My hubby still likes the smell which I think is a bit odd.
I quit smoking 13 years ago. It was one of the best things I ever did for myself. But I'll admit there are still times I'm tempted. But all I have to do is smell it and the temptation goes away.

Enjoy your new furnace...

Congratulations on your new heating system! I'm surprised to hear you had to pay for your oil usage upfront. I also have oil heat but I basically pay for each delivery of oil.

I really wish that the previous owners had switched to gas when they replaced the furnace 7 years ago. Now I have a pretty new, very efficient oil burner as well as new oil tank, so it's tough to justify the $$ to switch to gas. OTOH I believe gas is less expensive, plus the gas companies are offering insulation incentives that I could really use for my 1932 house.

82 pounds gone while quitting smoking? You rock!!

First off emoticon on quitting those NASTY emoticon I know exactly what you're talking about with that smell, as I lived with parents that smoked. I didn't know that I smelt like that! It just gets into EVERYTHING! NOTHING IS SAFE from that cigarette smoke! I can smell a smoker way before they get to me. My allergies have heighten my sensitivity to smelling ALL things, and I'm deathly allergic to the cigarette smoke! I'm so delighted and tickled pink that you QUIT!!! Now that's one thing that I don't mind saying that people QUIT and GAVE UP ON!!! It's a POSITIVE THING!!!

Your pictures didn't show up in the blog, so I'm trying to envision how in the world does a furnace hang from a ceiling? Having the electric furnace, is a heck of a lot cleaner and to me safer. You'll have a stable bill every month, and not have to fork out BIG BUCKS to get the heat, when you need it or want it. I'm happy that your delighted with the new purchase for your home.

Now, young lady, oh my gosh!!! The weight loss!!! YAHOO!!! You're doing amazing and I'm really proud of you!!! Keep up the good work, which I know you will!!!

emoticon on the new furnace. I can't believe you were paying $2,000 a year for heat. I have a gas furnace, and I don't pay anywhere near that amount. I think that even with the electric furnace you'll be paying a lot less...if nothing else, it will be a monthly payment which is easier to do then one lump sum.
Sadly, I can't see the pictures....I'd like to show my friend how you mounted the furnace in your basement. Every Spring, her basement floods and wrecks her furnace....she should mount it to the ceiling too.

I hate Plateaus

Sunday, October 13, 2013

Here we go again. So far it is a short one – but I dislike it all the same! I have not lost in 9 days – that’s a huge amount of time for me. I have not gained either, so that is a good thing. I get very frustrated when I plateau. I don’t get discouraged really – because I know if I stick to plan it WILL come off. Just irritating that it is not coming off according to the way I want it too! I will stick to my overall plan. It WILL come off!

But I am having another NSV! …I have been able to lower my insulin by 10 units over the last week and a half! My doctor says that to just keep doing what I am doing and I may be able to get off of it eventually!!!

A very big WOW on the Insulin!! Great accomplishment. And...I would suspect as your body readjusts, that is a partial cause of the plateau... As you said, give it time, and It Will Happen. take care,

Lowering your insulin is absolutely just as good as losing pounds!

I think plateaus are necessary as the body adjusts to the changes. Be patient with your body, it is HEALING and that includes periods of "recovery time".

Your decrease in insulin is a very big plus!!! And those are just numbers on the scale - the number on my scales is just the same, but I have had a number of people ask if I have lost weight. And, a neighbor who works as Penneys, brought me a pair of jeans that had been on sale. She said she was not sure if they would fit, since I had lost weight. I did not tell her otherwise.

I have not been exercising as much but am eating much better. I really do not snack much, but do love cheese. That is one item that I have cut back on. And am drinking more water.

You are doing great - emoticon

Don't feel frustrated or discouraged if the plateau is longer. I have had some be months long! They happen. NSV's can keep us going during those times! That NSV is fantastic!! Well done!!

You have been doing an emoticon job. Perhaps adding some more time...in small amounts....to your exercising routine might just give you the extra push that you need to move the scale. The scale is not the only way to measure success. How do you feel in general? How are your clothes fitting you now? Do you have more energy? All these questions are important to ask yourself when you feel like you are at a standstill. emoticon my friend.

POUTINGPEGGY 10/13/2013 8:11AM

What is a plateau? Is it just the scales? I know it's frustrating when they dont move BUT you are having so many non scale victories that you can measure your life changes so more accurately without the scales. In a few days you will lose about 3 or 4lb. I wonder what the next non scale triumph will be? It's like magic reading the changes you are making to your life. It keeps me on track. emoticon

FERRETLOVER1 10/13/2013 8:06AM

Try to remember that it's only a number on the scale - how you feel and how your clothes fit is a much more accurate depiction of how you're doing.

My brand new NSV – I’m cleaning up NOW

Tuesday, October 08, 2013

No really – I’m cleaning! I have not been able to clean my house for over 6 years. My hubby took care of it….well…he cleaned the middle and kept it looking ok. It really needed a deep cleaning. And purging!!!

I have been de-cluttering since Saturday. I’ve thrown away 8 big garbage bags of stuff and have a couple of others sat aside for a yard sale. And I’ve only done 2 and half rooms! I am slowly working my way around the house. I am for the most part using the Fly Lady methods and doing it in 15 minutes tasks. You’d be surprised what you can accomplish in 15 minutes when you don’t have to set down to rest every two minutes!!

I’ve also been able to start helping cook and clean the dishes. I wasn’t able to do that for a very long time. My husband James had to take care of me like I was a baby. I couldn’t help him at all. Now I CAN!!!!! It has been so satisfying to clean the house. I’m sure I will get tired of it eventually and then wish I didn’t have to clean but for right now I am simply enjoying doing it and watching my house become a comfy and welcoming home once again!

Saturday is house cleaning day my Mom said long ago. And I just feel like staying here on the internet. . . . . but I'll set my timer 20 minutes to do a start on just picking up. . . . . then if I wish come back here with washer, dryer & dish washer hummin' (We have it so much better than our Moms had it!) and on & on until I feel that thrill of accomplishment. You Spark People really rock! God Bless!

I still want to spend some time talking to you, but as you can imagine I am up to my eyeballs in boxes, literally! LOL. Have lots of fun discovering your home again.

Land sakes alive!!! What a coo and a MAJOR NSV!!! Now you and your hubby can clean the house, do dishes, and even cook, side by side. What a neat way to spend time that you never had before, together!!! I actually feel like I'm going through this with you, as I've been there. There is still some cleaning I'm not able to do, because of my leg, now, but we're working on that, too.
