40 pounds gone!!!!

Monday, July 01, 2013

The highest I ever weighed was 426. I now weigh 386. That’s 40 pounds. Much of it since I quit smoking on February 22, 2013. When I quit smoking I was determined to not gain weight – so I started taking better care of myself. Two days before that I didn’t feel well and decided to test my sugar. As a type 2 diabetic I should have been testing at least once a day -but my sugar had been good for a couple of years so I was very lax about testing. Well the night I tested it was over 400! Trip to the doctor the next day. He told me that I had to get a handle on it and to go low carb. Best thing I have ever done for my health. I have felt better than I have in years, my sugar is under control (I did have to go on basal insulin – long acting - but not bolus – short acting)

Second best thing I have done is start exercising! I started to workout in earnest on June 7th, 2013…the day before my 10th wedding anniversary. I am tired of not being able to go anywhere on our anniversary because I can’t walk very far. Now that I am doing chair aerobics and also walking (I have HAD to walk to get my Daddy into and out of his doctors appointments and hospital visits) I am doing so much better. I am becoming addicted to moving! Today after I finished my regular workout I wasn’t too tired so I did an additional 10 minutes of a 20 minute chair aerobic video I found on the web. My next goal is to be able to complete the whole 20 minutes – it is a lot harder than my regular chair exercises. Then this evening as hubby James and I were sitting and working at the computers I decided to take a walk to the end of the driveway (long driveway) and James came with me! So I got an extra 10 minute walk in as well.

Here is the link to the video I found if you are interested. This guy is very motivating

I don't know you but I sure am proud of you for losing that weight and doing the chair exercises. I love it and without it I would be probably bed ridden. emoticon

My new toy!

Wednesday, June 26, 2013

Today was an ok day - Took Daddy to radiation and it took longer than normal because they were backed up…but bonus was that Doctor said he would refill all of Daddy's prescriptions so that he does not have to go to any other doctors while he is getting his chemo and radiation except for himself and the chemo Dr - yay - less Dr visits!!!!!

Went to dentist today for a toothache - it is a broken filling! He will be fixing it next Tuesday on the 2nd, I can live with it till then - had it about 3 weeks - this was the first chance I had to do something about it!

Got my workout in and added a very controversial product - a shake weight. Found one in Roses dept store yesterday for 10 bucks and couldn't resist. I don't believe its calorie burn claims so I only put down 10 cals burned but I didn't buy it for calorie burn, I am hoping in addition to the dumbbells I use that it will strengthen my triceps muscles. It is not easy to use and I could feel the "burn" so maybe it will work for what I want it to do. We will see. out of all the negative reviews I found on the internet - most said that it actually would work the triceps - one review said that was all that it was good for. LOL so maybe I will have luck with it. Again – I know that it is controversial and I don’t really view it as “true” exercise equipment – but it is fun to do and extra movement can’t hurt!

Sounds like you had a good day. Sorry about your tooth! I'll bet you do see some improvement with your "new toy" - it has to help some. Wait a while and you can give us a report on it.
Just wanted to tell you "HI" and have a super weekend!! emoticon

Sunday June 23, 2013 was a good day. Woke up about 7, ate my breakfast then worked out for an hour! Then my hubby and I went shopping. Went to Magic Mart first and I actually walked around the store!!!! Did not have to take my mobility cart with me. It was a very freeing feeling.

Next we went to Kmart. I did ride one of their mobility carts there. Old habits die hard I guess and I was very tired from Magic Mart. Bought 3 new beautiful shirts for $5 a piece!!! Don’t want to spend too much on clothes right now as I am losing pretty good and my clothes are starting to get loose on me. But I was so pleased to find something pretty that actually fit.

When we came out of Kmart I realized I needed to use the restroom. Should have gone in Kmart! This Kmart is in a mall and I had to literally walk 5 minutes to the bathroom. But I was so pleased that I could actually make the walk. I could NOT have done that just a few short weeks ago. My workouts are making such a difference.

Now – about those bubbles – my husband and I are both just a couple of big kids at heart and he saw some bubble solution in Magic Mart. Well – he actually bought a big bottle of it! We sat in the car in the parking lot blowing bubbles!!!!!! Felt like a kid again. It was so much fun! Got home and played some more on the back porch – my dog didn’t know what to think of me! LOL

That was a fun trip! I loved those bubbles too. I should get some. My cat would have a fit!! I'm so proud that you are losing weight so well - fantastic.
I see that you belong to a chair exercise team. I don't, but I have four DVD's from Stronger Senior Chair leader Anne Burnell. I really like them. I get around fine but exercise a lot to DVD's. I don't feel comfortable walking on the street so walk to Leslie Sansone DVD's or in my back yard. I don't drive anymore either. I think I've pretty much answered everything about me on my page, but if you have any questions - just ask. My problem isn't weight - I weigh 115 - 116. I just want to stay limber and able to get around on my own.
Hope you have a super week. emoticon Nancy emoticon

I quit smoking 4 months ago today

Saturday, June 22, 2013

Wow! 4 months! I'm so glad I quit. It has made a huge difference in my life! Especially since my Daddy was diagnosed with lung cancer. He has needed me and I don't think I could have helped him if I was still smoking. I have been actively trying to lose weight since January but wasn't doing any exercise - I started doing exercise when Daddy got sick and now I can walk him into the hospital and doctors offices with little trouble. I even walked around the grocery store and I haven't been able to do that in years. It is also nice to not have to worry about going outside to smoke while I sit in the hospital with him while he gets his treatment. I am very lucky in that I have not had one crave since I quit smoking...before when I would quit it would be really bad...this time I know it is my forever quit! I am vigilant though - I know I am only one puff away from two packs a day.

I have applied the same determination to my weight loss and my new eating plan. I had to start watching my food intake when my sugar went wacky. I have been a diabetic for years but it was always well controlled with pills. Now I have to watch my carbs like a hawk or my sugar will shoot up. This of course has the added benefit of weight loss. (yes I know low carb is hugely controversial but my doctor has me on this eating plan and watches me closely and I am healthier than I have been in years)

This whole journey started with one day that my cigarettes made me really sick...I vowed that day to change my life so that I wouldn't die young like my mother and brother did. I may still get cancer one day - Daddy had been quit smoking for 20 years and still got it - but at least I know I have tried to make myself healthier.

I am so proud of my new friend. My husband quit 3 1/2 years ago and it was one day at a time. I really admire you for dieting and stopping smoking at the same time. emoticon

emoticon emoticon Congrats on stopping smoking! It is SO addictive, like legal crack. I never smoked, but I have friends and coworkers (I'm a nurse in an Emergency Dept) that smoke. I just look at them in amazement (as I eat the pizza one of my co-dependent friends brought in). Sigh ....

Great job! I quit many years ago but remember how hard it was when I did. It does really make a difference in how you feel. Unfortunately it also makes food taste better ;) I remember I gained 20 lbs when I quit but managed to get that off since I was able to exercise more. I just changed my habit to exercising instead of smoking :) emoticon

My Friday the 14th

Saturday, June 15, 2013

Was it really the 14th or did somebody slip in a 13 on me!?

Went to hospital to get blood work for Daddy and see if his white count was ok. While we were waiting on results - hubby called and said Daddy's radiation Dr was trying to get a hold of him so I called him from the hospital - they are starting radiation on Tuesday the 18th and Chemo on the same day, right after the radiation.

While we were absorbing the news that we now had concrete plans of what was going to happen and when - we got the results back from Daddy's blood work......
low white count AND low hemoglobin! had to have a simple shot for the white count but had to have blood transfusion for hemoglobin. 2 units - three hours each. But they had so much trouble finding a vein on Daddy that the doctor ordered a picc line to be inserted so they did not have to fight to find a vein each time Daddy needed blood drawn or given or the chemo given. Procedure was supposed to take 30 minutes - took 2.5 hours because they had such trouble finding a vein to put the picc line in! Then they had to start the blood. Daddy got home at midnight.

anyway - I got my workout in - I've made getting my workout each day a priority - no matter when I have to do it - I am going to do it!
