2/18 ~ Lent Day 2

2/18 ~ Lent Day 2

~Wine ~ None

~White stuff ~ None

~Complaining ~ Yesterday was easy. Today I actually had to leave the house and interact with people, not so easy. Although I kept my mouth in check my mind had a couple moments of major complaining. I guess I can work on that later, for now I’ll just be content to keep my mouth shut !!

~Gifts ~ I have a page-a-day calendar and each day I cut off the date and save the affirmations. When I’m out and about I leave them places. On the shelves at the grocery store, in the shopping cart, theater seats, public restrooms, at gas pumps, wherever I happen to go. Those were my gifts today. Gave the gift of time to FIL and MIL. Also dropped stars every where I went.

2/17 ~ Lent Day 1

2/17 ~ Lent Day 1

~Wine ~ None

~White stuff ~ None. All fruits and veggies, lentil soup, a few nuts and a piece of dark chocolate.

~Complaining ~ Today was easy. Worked from home, alone. Had nobody to complain to. When hubby came home I noticed his complaining, but didn't participate.

~Gifts ~ Gave the gift of a lengthy conversation to a good friend feeling a bit depressed. Gave myself the gift of a pretty lazy day, I have felt stressed and needed a day to just take my time, relax, do nothing.

Great Job on your first day!

I was able to stay away from desserts and even with the madness at work today kept myself out of it.

2/16 ~ Warm up to Lent ~ Practice Day

Wednesday, February 17, 2010

2/16 ~ Warm up to Lent ~ Practice Day

~Wine ~ None

~White stuff ~ I went to Publix to get a veggie sandwich, they were out of their whole wheat bread, had to settle for “whole grain” which I’m pretty sure had white wheat in it. A better choice would have been to leave and go someplace else, but I was pressed for time and caved. Have to work on that!

~Complaining ~ Tough one today. Spent some time with a friend that brings out the complainer in me. I held in check, just didn’t say much at all. Had some tempting moments!!

~Gifts ~ Gave the gift of time to my MIL and FIL. Chocolate chip cookies to friends (I had none!)

Way to go! I'm sure the whole grain bread wasn't that bad. You are off to an excellent start. I think my tongue would have been gone from biting it off. : ) Not complaining is such a good thing.

Have a great day!

Lent -~- My Game Plan

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

I’ve been giving this whole 40-day “Name your Game” a lot of thought. I want something not too easy but not daunting. I wanted to have at least one thing to give up and one thing to do. I’ve actually come up with 2 of each. Here they are.

I’m giving up wine and white stuff. Wine is pretty self-explanatory. White stuff is as follows;
~white wheat
~white pasta
~white rice
~white potatoes
~white sugar (actually all sugar)
If anybody can suggest additions to this white list, I would love to hear them.

Wine and white pasta are my 2 biggest temptations. I have a weakness for both.

Two things I’m going to do.
www.acomplaintfreeworld.org/
No complaining! I’m going to go 40 days without complaining. No complaining about anything to anyone at anytime! I guess technically this would be counted as something to give up. Give up complaining! Should be interesting!

www.29gifts.org/
I’m going to give a gift every day for 40 days.
Check out the web site, it’s a wonderful plan. Gifts can be as small as a compliment or as big as you want to make it. But every single day I will consciously give some kind of a gift.

Thanks for bring me back to my roots, I too am joining in after reading your first blog about Lent. I have just added another item to my list, but I also like the thought about no complaining. I am going to start with not complaining about what I am "giving up" for Lent. Biggie when it comes to Soda. I am also going to add to my day gratitude, yes I am thankful and appreciative of many things in my life, I just never have set time aside daily to really focus on what I am most thankful for.

Again thanks for adding to my journey, I am already richer for it.

Wow! I like your plan! I gave up the wine at the beginning of 2010. I really don't miss it as much as I thought I would. 40 days without complaining, I'm seriously considering that one. It would require a bit of thought, since I think I complain more than I should, without thinking about it (if you know what I mean).

    What a wonderful idea!
I think for me to give up complaining would be impossible!

I am considering joining your challenge tomorrow and giving up coffee....but that will be so, so, so hard!!!! So I'm still thinking about it...

Oh yes, for your list : milk is also white...that should be easy, as you probably don't have any anyway!

I love your gift idea the most - will have a look at the site.

Great idea. The only other white food I can think of is cauliflower, but I guess that would be a vegetable in the "good" white things category.

Good luck to you!

Name your game and JUST DO IT !!!

Sunday, February 14, 2010

Lent is a period of fasting and repentance, originally and traditionally observed by Catholics and some Protestant denominations in preparation for Easter. The length of the Lenten fast is 40 days. During this time, participants eat sparingly or simply give up a particular food or HABIT. Ash Wednesday and Lent began as a way for people to remind themselves to repent their sins.

In 2010 Ash Wednesday is 2/17/2010. You might be one of those people that get the calendar out and realize that Ash Wednesday to Easter is more than 40 days, 46 to be exact. However, if you don’t count Sundays it comes out to exactly 40 days. In the original tradition Sunday was a day of celebration, not fasting and repentance.

SO – Let’s all post something that we are willing to give up for 40 days. It doesn’t have to be food. Could be a bad habit, television, complaining, or foul language. Find something that you really want to change about yourself and commit to 40 days, February 17 - April 4! Let Sunday be your day off.

Maybe you have a couple things you would like to get rid of for 40 days. Or maybe you have something you would like to DO every day for 40 days, meditate, journal, Blog, be on time or walk a mile. Whatever it is, make a commitment, hold yourself accountable and get your Team Mates to hold each other accountable. Let’s see how many of us can make a positive life change in 40 days!

Now, I know 40 days seems like a long time and you’re sitting there thinking, “OK, I’ll make it something easy, really easy.” Like, I’ll give up painting my fingernails, or wearing flip-flops in the snow. NOT!! Make this something that at the end of the forty days you can look in the mirror and say "I DID IT, I REALLY DID IT! WOO HOO!!" On the morning of April 4 you can look back and know that you really accomplished something and be proud of yourself!

Oh, I almost forgot. If you want to do more than one, that’s OK too. Just make sure you are 100% totally committed! 40 days, no crap, no excuses, you name your game, JUST DO IT!!

NAME YOUR GAME! JUST DO IT!

MMMLEAFYGREENS 2/15/2010 10:04AM

This is a good post, it really got me thinking.

My mom is catholic but my dad is orthodox christian. The orthodox actually have many days and periods throughout the year when they cannot have certain foods. For lent, the strict followers basically follow a vegan diet for the whole 40 days. (it's the only time my relatives ask me for nutrition/recipe advice)

I don't follow either religion anymore, but i have always like the idea of giving something up for 40 days, just to see what life would be like without it. I think i'm going to work toward better sleep health, which means:
1. Not eating before bed
2. Not watching movies to fall asleep
3. Practicing simple stress release exercises if i'm having trouble falling asleep

ps: are you going to indulge yourself on Mardi Gras?

What a great blog, thank you for putting in such a way that lends itself to the truer meaning of lent. I am in... No Soda! This has been such a struggle for me even considering all the great health benefits of "leaving it behind".

Good luck to all.

    Hey great proposal!!!

I was going to mention this is a great period to tune in to abstinence, every cultural group and every religion has these periods sometime in the year so that we can reflect upon our habits...and maybe even make permanent changes.

I am not going to drink any alchohol until Easter.

Will you post this to a message board? as a goal or will I?

ps I just joined the Awakening team that you belong to. emoticon

Great blog...nothing was mentioned about Lent this morning in church (in my denomination we usually don't hear much about it) so I am grateful to you for drawing it to our attention.

I need to focus on my spiritual growth - I think that my 40 days will revolve around that .... I have a few days to ponder it over. Thanks!

I have a few things I'd like to do for the next 40 days...and hopefully they will become a complete lifestyle change instead of just a temporary things..This month and last month I made a list of things I'd give up for the month...some things I did well with...others I did not, but I will keep trying. Why wait til the 17th....I will start today!!!!

Maybe I will come back and share my list....thank you!!!! Best wishes to you.... emoticon
