Plugging along...

Tuesday, February 22, 2011

Snow plummets the Central US as things heat up in the WI State Capitol. Democrats still MIA, as the Governor tries to move on; refusing to negotiate w/ the public & Democrats... Exciting, isn't it?

Three days of snow shoveling back to back... My back and neck are aching from the "extra", strenuous activity. Thinking of calling in to work sick tomorrow w/ a case of Cabin Fever --- lol (j/k)... I can't because I'm scheduled to open tomorrow at 7:45 am.

Did 30 min of Pilates & 5 min. of spinning last night... Despite the back ache, I felt great & in good spirits because my endurance is gradually improving.

I know it doesn't seem like much, but I just completed 15 minutes of spinning on my stationary bike, which is another accomplishment because my knees tend to bother me in extreme cold & humid conditions. Amazingly enough though, no knee pain... Legs a little sore though because I haven't used the bike in awhile.

Rummaging around in a closet, I found my hand held electric massager & heating pad... Going to try using them and see if they help any w/ the sore muscles. Hopefully they will.

Observation: I don't know why, but lately I've been craving celery sticks, hummus, vanilla yogurt (greek style), strawberries, bananas & oatmeal.
- Weird, I know. But at least they're all healthy items.

Beating the odds... And starting over (again)

Saturday, February 19, 2011

So far this year, I've been batting zero w/ all the bad luck I've been having.
Yet, amazingly enough I haven't gained a pound... Instead, my weight plateaued.

Early morning on Saturday, January 15th, I was driving down the highway heading home from a friend's house when a semi-truck (cab & rig) came speeding up fast behind my car and, unable to slow down (due to the snow) slammed into the back of my car (a 2006 Toyota Corolla), shaving off most of the trunk & pushing the backseat in. It was an absolute miracle I was not only conscious, but able to walk away from the scene of the accident w/ only a scraped knee, a sore lower back & neck (due to muscle spasms).
- Due to the nature of the accident, the ER doctor was concerned about the muscle
spasms in my lower back/neck, so I was limited with what I could do (i.e. no
driving for 48 hrs, no exercising until I followed up w/ doctor 2 wks later, etc.).

Following up w/ my primary doctor, I was told I could exercise, but to limit myself to Yoga and/or Pilates until my back healed a bit more; gradually working up to spinning & possibly low-impact step aerobics... Which is what I've been trying to do.

That was until I came down with the horrible virus that's going around in the month of February. I was sick most of the month & am finally almost over it (or so it seems). Being sick, I felt physically drained w/ little to no appetite. When I wasn't at work, I was sleeping.

And now here I sit... Typing this blog.
- My back is still a bit sore, but the pain will subside in due time (or at least that's
what I've been told). I'm back on the road driving... Even bought myself a brand
new car after returning back to work. Still sometimes have the nightmares &
brief panic moments if I see a car/truck speeding up fast behind me while I'm
driving, but that too will pass in due time. I'm just lucky to be alive & count my
blessings daily.
- Yesterday was my first day back to exercising... Pilates & low-impact step aerobics.
My back was aching when I done, but it was a great feeling knowing I'm able to
now move forward (again) on my "healthy" lifestyle journey.

Lesson learned... Never take anything in life for granted & believe in yourself no
matter what (even when life gets in the way of things). Sure, I've had my set backs
but I will succeed... It just might take a little longer than anticipated.

Back in the saddle again...

Monday, December 27, 2010

Wow... It's great to have the Internet up & running properly (again). It's also great to be back.

Sadly, though I've gained weight (again) and just found out my mom purchased everyone tickets for a European cruise (June 2011)... UGH! That leaves only 6 months to lose the weight.

Okay, enough w/ the holiday woes. I received a crock pot & new cookware for Christmas, so it's time to start making use of it... Just need to find some vegetarian recipes & I'll be in business.

As for exercising... The weather here in Milwaukee, WI has been warmer than normal. Thus, a great opportunity to get outside & go for a walk. No shoveling required, so there's no excuses.

Burning question: Will I lose the weight before June 2011? I'm going to try and now w/ the Internet back up & running, I can log in to SP for all the motivation, support & tools I'll need to succeed.

You CAN lose weight before the trip! Set small goals for yourself - think - OK - I can lose 5 pounds this month
(Whatever reasonable goal fits here) and strive to meet THAT goal. Even a small amount of weight lost can make you feel incredibly different - more energy, better self esteem, confidence. I have not met my ultimate goal yet but the last vacation I took was totally different due to these reasons. Good luck on your journey to become healthier - there are definitely MANY recipes on this site to test out your new cookware. You can adapt almost any recipe to the crockpot too! I am envious of your cruise plans! How much fun you are going to have - what a great gift!

Becoming a vegetarian...

Wednesday, October 20, 2010

Becoming a vegetarian is something I've often wondered about as my diet for the past 1-2 years was, for the most part a meatless diet. In due time, my craving for meat base foods dwindled to the point where I didn't crave it at all.

So, here I was, eating a meatless diet; yet I was clueless about everything else (i.e. nutrients/vitamins, calorie intake, etc.). Finding a book on the subject of transitioning to becoming a vetarian, I began reading it and not only found recipes that were good (I tried a few), but important health related information as well.

Today is Day #3 and I'm feeling great. However, I'm still having problems w/ my calorie & carb intake (too many), which should balance out in due time. My biggest frustration is teaching myself to cook all over again, as I was used to cooking meat. based meals in the past.

I am however pleased to say my first three vegetarian meals (from a cookbook) were edible... The Angelic Tofu Sandwich Filling was delicious!

Going "Green" and Lovin' It...

Sunday, August 22, 2010

While wandering through a local bookstore looking for a fitness book, I came across a display pertaining to "Going Green"... Looking at the display, one particular book caught my attention, so I purchased it; never realizing it would change my life.

Going "Green" was challenging at first; but using the book as a guide made things easier. In the process, I've improved my health by trying new foods and met people along the way who are continuously teaching me about eco-friendly products, etc. In return, I'm sharing my knowledge with family & friends posting "Green Facts" on Twitter & FaceBook and LiveJournal.

Will I ever go completely "Green"? Definitely not, which is okay by me because I know that I'm still doing my part to make a difference.
