You will never guess what happened....

Saturday, August 16, 2014

Hi everyone,

You'll never guess what I have done. Last Monday, August 11 I tripped forward and broke my left wrist. The doctors say it will take 4 to 6 weeks for the healing process. Let me tell you it is a real pain to only operate with one hand. My exercise had been going well and I will now have to put it on hold for a while. I plan to start up again once my pain has subsided. I have a fiberglass cast so it is not as heavy as a plaster cast. On the plus side my cast is a pretty, pretty purple.

As everyone knows you have to deal with life as it comes. I am thankful that this happened during the summer not the winter. I can't even imagine me trying to balance when walking on ice or snow with a cast on.

I am fortunate that my workplace is accommodating my injury and gave me some voice recognition software to load on my work laptop. That way I can't speak and send my emails without having to type everything. As a matter of fact I am using the windows voice recognition software to compose this blog. How cool is that?

I will keep everyone posted on my progress and I appreciate each and every one of you.

    So sorry to hear that!

On August 3 I tripped and fell forward while running, landing hard on concrete. In addition to several abrasions, I broke a bone in my right hand. I also have a fiberglass cast, for 5 weeks. I chose white. I still have use of my thumb and 2 fingers. The other 2 are out but still hurt, are bruised, etc. My first broken bone ever.

I'm still able to run with the cast, but little things, like typing, cutting food, etc. are hard.

I feel for you! I hope the pain keeps subsiding for you!

August 6 progress update & more

Wednesday, August 06, 2014

Well so far I am surprising myself and I am actually losing some weight! Woo Hoo! I have been doing some power walking (fast for me anyway) and I am now fitting into clothes that I would not have been able to a month ago. How's that for progress?

My calorie range has been from 1300 to 1600 calories per day. Per the doctor, I am supposed to be closer to 1300 a day which is my goal, but hey - life happens. If it hit the 1300 range most of the days and I eat smart, I'm OK with it.

Also, I have incorporated fish into our menu twice a week. We eat Swai and Tilapia, mostly because they are the cheapest fish I can buy, but they taste good too. Here are the recipes I use and they are super simple.

This is the one for the Tilapia. It's low cal and doesn't take long to cook. I deglaze the pan with about 2 tablespoons of white wine which creates a little sauce to go with it.

Also when I mince garlic, I cheat. emoticon What I actually do is use a garlic mincer that I have had for several years. It comes apart easy and I throw it in the dishwasher (top rack) with no problems. I LOVE this gadget.

Here is the recipe I use the Swai with. Using the Panko breadcrumbs makes a big difference in the texture of the dish when eating it. It uses grated lemon rind in the breadcrumb mixture and I use the rest of the lemon for the fish, nothing gets wasted.

So, by my calculations, I have lost 13 pounds since the beginning of June. I am attending weekly weight management classes at the hospital too. I don't want to just do the diet thing and see the doctor every month. I am making a commitment to myself to do this. I guess it's an investment really.

Now on to some other stuff. What have I been up to lately outside what I have just talked about? Well, I have been making coffee sleeves. What's that you say? Well, take a look at the picture below and you'll get an idea. Some of you might recognize the material I used as it was the same material I used when I made that purse a while back.

Here's the front

Here's the back

And here's what it looks like closed

Who knows what I will come up with this weekend!

I am struggling with diabetes. You don't want to go there. Congratulations on the weight loss, your creativity, and for getting into some classes. I find the classes help me because I am in this house except for church. I haven't made any friends in this neighborhood since moving here in 2008. People stay inside and when they are out working, they don't want to stop to chat.

You are doing the right thing for yourself. I will copy the recipes. We never eat fish here unless it is processed like Gorton's or Mrs. Pauls. I am glad you are back!

Where I've been & Where I'm going

Sunday, July 13, 2014

Hi everyone,

I know it's been a while and I wanted to fill you in on what's been happening in my world. First of all, from July 2013 to the end of January this year, my husband had been going though medical treatment for a serious illness. Thank God the treatment was successful! Well, shortly after that, we found out that he has Type 2 Diabetes and 2 weeks later he was on Insulin.

I don't want any sympathy about this, it's life and you have to deal with it. But with these emotional ups and downs it's was hard for me to keep up with what I was doing on SparkPeople, so I needed to take a break from it.

I have gained some weight (big surprise!) but I have also begun losing some of that weight. I decided to get off my butt and quit feeling as if my life was out of control. I found out the health insurance plan I have also includes weight management and I made an appointment with a doctor in early June. As a result since I weighed in at the doctor's office I have officially lost a little over 13 pounds. I am on a 1100 - 1300 calorie a day diet and my breakfast & lunches include protein shakes & bars. It's called a Modified Very Low Calorie Diet. I am of course under a doctor's supervision for this. I am attending weekly weight management classes and am seeing a dietitian as well.

So here's my daily meal plan:

Breakfast:
200 Calorie Protein Shake

Mid morning snack:
1 piece of fresh fruit (Banana, pear, apple, etc.)

Lunch:
100 Calorie Protein Shake
160 Calorie Protein Bar

Mid afternoon snack:
Veggie (carrot sticks, bell pepper, etc.)

Dinner:
Normal meal with protein, carbs, fat, veggies, etc.

Needless to say, because of my husband's dietary restrictions, I have really cut out a lot of carbs in my diet. I never really thought I could do this because I LOVE carbs. Give me a baked potato, or pasta any day! It's amazing what you can do when you really want to isn't it?

Something else I have noticed because of the plan I am following now is that it's amazing what things I see and 'want' when it never bothered me before. That doesn't mean I am going to buy them though. I just have to get my mind trained as to what is right for me.

Oh, and I made the commitment to myself that I would start working out at the gym. I have my bag packed and plan to start tomorrow. That should really kick butt on my weight loss.

So, you may not see as many blogs from me as you did in the past, but I will give you updates as I progress.

It's good to be back.....

So glad to have you "back among us" once again! Diabetes, properly managed, sure can turn your life upside down. I am so thankful that I don't have it, as I am really not sure I could adhere to all the limitations it imposes. BUT, you do what you have to do, and it sounds like you are a by product beneficiary of the changes your husband needs to make. So there is a silver lining to every cloud! I thought about you a few weeks ago when I was at the Albuquerque Arts and Crafts Festival. I bought a pair of glass earrings and saw many pieces similar to what I have seen you post here on SP. Such pretty designs and color combinations. Glad you are back!
