1st 5 K

Saturday, October 13, 2012

I finished. I was dead last out of 12 participants - including after my 70 year old mother who had to walk the whole way due to a bum ankle. But I won my age division. emoticon I had to walk most of it - very disappointing. I had planned to RUN my first 5K this fall. But heart surgery to fix my pacemaker and related health difficulties put a major dent in my training plans. But I did meet my goal of finishing within an hour. 53:21. And I was able to jog part.

And now I'm hooked.

1 year later & 50 pounds lighter

Sunday, August 26, 2012

About a year ago I was able to start consistently losing weight - because my gallbladder was going bad. After it was gone I had lost the habit of curling up in my refrigerator after work and kept losing. I also started the move to a vegan lifestyle and discovered that those extra fine frozen nukable blocks I would add to my daily menu were no longer on the menu and nop longer conveniently in the freezer. And I exercised.

So this morning I officially hit the 50 pounds gone mark.

There is still more than 50 left that need to go. But it is going to me a next great year as I say goodbye.

The Cheese Problem

Saturday, July 07, 2012

My greatest challenge in the transition to a vegan lifestyle has been cheese. I even came across information about the new blood type diet program and for B types dairy is a passion. I've never been fond of milks. My yogurt went peacefully. But that wonderful creamy texture of my beloved cheese has been a problem. Especially since the vegan "cheese alternatives" pretty much suck, though are kind of ok in cooking. But still, they do pretty much suck - and stink - and are really expensive

I found what I've been after in avocados. They have that same creamy texture. And they are in season right now. Not sure what I'll do in the winter when the price jumps this winter. And it isn't exactly local food here in North Carolina. But for now I'm in heaven.

Have you tried nutritional yeast? You can use it to make all kinds of cheese sauces, or just sprinkle on soups, salads, pastas, pizza, rice... I keep it always on hand for a cheese craving :-)

P.S. avocados are also amazing! Cool to know you can freeze them!

I love avocados too and it's become my butter subsitute.

And you can freeze avocados---I buy up a bunch while they're cheap and ripen them, peel them and throw them in a small freezer bag and they freeze and thaw beautifully. I got the idea when I noticed that Trader Joe's sold frozen avocado halves!

Avacados rock! even when they aren't in season just put them in a paper bag and they will ripen.

I have often heard that cheese is the biggest challenge to most people who are transitioning to vegan diets... and I am with you about most of those vegan cheese substitutes (and I have been fortunate not to be a big cheese consumer before we became vegan, but they really are pretty yucky). The good news is that with time and developing the taste for different foods (have you tried a nice homemade hummus for the creamy texture? Great on veggie sandwiches/wraps or as a dip instead of other spreads too) that cheese can kind of lose it's "draw". Well, that and some aversive conditioning (won't go into too much detail) really helped to eliminate desire for many animal based foods (if you know about the hormones/antibiotics/pus that are in them, the GMO feed they consume, how the animals are treated in factory farms, and some reading of books like the China Study, etc.) and vegan becomes much easier to do, in my experience. Good luck!

Another vegan step - the favorites list

Saturday, June 30, 2012

Continuing to transition to a vegan lifestyle and it is getting more complicated to avoid mega giant agribusiness. Now I'm on the look out for those sneaky GMOs, too.

But for today I finally cleaned out my SP food favorites list of anything animal related. It is now critter free. And some of it went with a "I used to eat that!" surprise. The potato sausage bake just doesn't seem healthy for anyone involved - pig and human alike.

My other latest vegan discovery is switching out the mass marketed tomato based salsas for a specialty jalapeno salsa. With the added heat - you never miss the cheese on mexican. In fact, you don't really miss you tongue at all. Glad I played it safe and didn't go for the habanero!

I love all things hot and spicy. My poor husband can't eat any of it. I noticed I like it a lot more since eating vegan. I'm glad you did a little housekeeping. It makes tracking your food much easier.

Coming back

Thursday, June 28, 2012

I was able to start exercising again today. Just 30 minutes. It will take some time coming back. Before my cardiac problems I had lost 49 pounds. After having to give up exercise for awhile with diagnosis and surgery - along with associated nervous eating - I gained 6 back. So the big 50 pound celebration will have to wait to more towards the end of July. But I will get there.
