Big Creek 11.15.13

Saturday, November 16, 2013

Tom and I hiked at Big Creek in Olympic National Park Yesterday. We saw just one other person all day but saw thousands of mushrooms, lots of mossy trees and some pretty creeks. We got in about six miles and took over 600 photos. Here's some of the best ones:

Big Creek Campground is closed but you can park outside the gate and walk to the trail.

I sure find the process of putting pictures on here difficult. Is it possible to do more than one at a time? Rearrange them?

Good to see you blogging here again! Look at those mushrooms! Crazy looking!! Gorgeous trail and waterfalls!
As far as I know can't upload more than one pic at a time. You can rearrange them before or after you post, you just have to find it on the jpg list and move it. I rename my pics so they are easier to find.
Appreciate the effort though. Sometimes the load time gets slow too! That gets frustrating!!!
Thank you.

Crystal Peak 7.5.13

Saturday, July 06, 2013

We loved Crystal Peak!!!
The views of Mount Rainier are amazing! The flowers are beautiful!
The hike is just the right challenge for us at almost 8 miles with a gain of 3100' to the top at 6595'.
We hung out at the top enjoying the views, taking pictures and talking to some great people.
We were worn out by the time we got back to the car.

Here's some pics:

Here's a link to my FB album too:

Is that you on the top of that rock overlooking "hiding-in-the-clouds Mt. Rainier"?
Great looking trail. I think I might like to try that one if it looks like that all the way. Also love the flowers, lake, and stream. I have to Google the spot to try and figure out what lake that is. But it's so cool. You might be able to go swimming in a mountain lake by next weekend as I hear you are in for a heat wave. Fun!

Great job on your streak and thanks for sharing "home" again. Have a great one!

I love the whole area you hike in all the time. You have awesome places around you! I have a lot of places to hike around me, and I love them, but not as beautiful as the places you have with all the streams, lakes, flowers, amazing views, etc! Three Year Hiking Streak - Mount Townsend 6.28.13

Saturday, June 29, 2013

Our hike to Mount Townsend completed 3 years of hiking at least once a week.

It all started with us deciding we should go see Mount St Helens. A real hike, not just a local trail that I managed to drag Tom along on occasionally. We had a fun day even though the mountain was complete covered by clouds. We had to go back the next week so we could actually see it=}

The next week, and the next... we decided to go to Mount Rainier.
At some point I started telling hubby that we couldn't break our "streak."
It became "where" not "if " we would go just to keep the streak alive.
We enjoyed the hikes, the drives and the time we were spending together. Our marriage grew stronger than ever. Our diet is much improved too.

We have seen so many beautiful places, mostly right here in western Washington.
We've seen many animals including foxes, marmots, deer, elk, pine marten, mountain goats, and even a bear.
From the lush green forests dripping with moss to the bare rock mountain peaks the opportunities here are endless. I hope we can do this for many more years. emoticon

Mount Townsend is a 8.2 mile round trip starting at 3200' going up to 6200'. The views are amazing at the top but toady the clouds made it hard to spot the mountains. We did see parts of Mount Rainier, Baker, Glacier Peak, Puget sound and Islands and Seattle. I want to go back on a clear day. Here's some pics.

Mount Rainier is hiding in the clouds.

My favorite pix is the first one of the trail switchback around the wild rhodies. Beautiful. I love how you find these nifty little nooks full of beautiful things and share with us. I think it would be fun to hike Mt Townsend. I've been close to it, but never bothered going. Too chicken of what I'll find in the wild besides the flowers and great scenes. Need to go with someone that is experienced.

Thank you! emoticon emoticon on the streak!

That is truly awesome!

Those pics from Mt Townsend are great. I didn't think the views would be that nice. And, you found Chocolate Lilies. Did you know those flowers are Chocolate Lilies? (or Checker Lilies, I prefer chocolate!) Those aren't too common in the wild. I've only seen them twice on trails.

Kelly Butte and Colquhoun Peak 6.22.13

Sunday, June 23, 2013

I love the Kelly Butte trail for it's steep climb, cool rocks that make great photo ops, great flowers, the view from the top and the lack of people. Colquhoun Peak is nearby and I couldn't resist bagging it. We got in about 5 miles and just had a fun day!

Here's some pics:

Mount Rainier from the beginning of the trail

Me climbing up

Almost to the top

Bear grass galore

Clouds blocking the view of Mount Rainier

Tom on the photo op rock

Me to scared to stand up on the spot to the left like Tom did

Colquhoun Peak from Kelly Butte, it's the little nipple in the middle.

So happy to see a post from you with the gorgeous pictures of course. OMG, how did your husband get to that little ledge. The Mountain has been in my thoughts; I just finished Jim Davidson's book The Ledge about his climb out of an 80 ft. crevasse after crashing through a rotten snow bridge...his partner Mike Price was killed in the fall as he couldn't self arrest and stop himself from going over the edge too. If you haven't read it, it's worthwhile.

Mount Rose Summit

Sunday, June 23, 2013

I've been hiking every week but have not been doing much with Sparkpeople. It seems that life got busy. It's that time of year, I want to be outside!

Last Friday we went back to Mount Rose and made it all the way to the top. It was cloudy and there were no views but I felt great pride in making it up this steep trail.
I was worn out by the time we were done.

Here's some of the pics:
Let's go.

Crossing a little snow patch

Trail shot

Lunch at the top

Climbing through a mess on the way down

Ha, looks like just a few obstacles for a little more challenge... I'm in Oregon now so I've done a few hikes in the redwoods and wish I wasn't going back to hot, hot AZ in another week. Hopefully I'll be back in August and might be able to get to Rainier to do some trails.
