I RAN THE WHOLE THING!

Saturday, April 17, 2010

32:28 is my official chip time for my first 5K race! WOOHOO!!!! emoticon

I was a total bundle of nerves--my husband will second that! I really thought I was going to throw up about an hour before the race, but I didn't.

We got lined up at 6:15 and started to get in the zone. It was chip timed so I didn't have to worry about pushing to the front of the pack. Before I knew it, we were off! I was so scared since I've been sick all week and haven't ran since last Saturday. I still was plenty congested and wasn't able to breathe through my nose, so that made my mouth uncomfortably dry for the whole thing. I didn't focus on that, though...I just tried to listen to the music and remember that I've run FARTHER than this! I was less than thrilled when we turned the first corner about a quarter of a mile in and saw a HUGE HILL. I just kept putting one foot in front of the other. All of a sudden I was PASSING people. I couldn't believe how many people didn't even try to run the hill; they stopped and walked.

I heard another runner near me say "We're a mile in" and that was the first time I looked at my Garmin watch--it confirmed what he said. That first mile FLEW. The course was all around a college campus and really was some nice scenery.

My dad was able to make it to the finish line, but MISSED ME SOMEHOW! I was bummed and so was he that we didn't get that finish line photo. It was really cool though that we finished on the football field. TONS of people were on either side cheering all the runners on! I definitely kept a 10 minute mile pace and can't believe it! It was just an awesome all around experience. I really was hoping to finish under 35 minutes, but didn't know what to expect. When I get back home I'll post some of the post-race photos of my husband and I...he was a ROCK STAR finishing in 26 minutes!

THANK YOU SPARK FRIENDS FOR ALL OF YOUR SUPPORT!!!!

Why did I have to get sick NOW?!?!

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

I AM FRUSTRATED!!!!

This cold is kicking my rear. I have a terrible sore throat.

I didn't get any exercise in yesterday.

I managed about 1/2 of my circuit training DVD this morning. I was literally woozy and dizzy, so I quit. I really tried to get through it.

I think at this point it's more important to get my rest and be healthy so I can run that race. I'm scared though, that I won't have it in me emoticon. This stinks.

I'm trying hard to stay positive, but I am frustrated.

emoticon Give yourself a little bit of a break - and don't get frustrated. It's only Tuesday!!! You still have a few days to kick the cold. Give your body some time to rest so it can fight that cold. You will feel better tomorrow if you rest up today.

My fitness plan (Since my 5k is THIS FRIDAY!)

Sunday, April 11, 2010

emoticonOkay, is it totally geeky for me to already be nervous for my 5K on Friday? PHYSICALLY I know that I'm prepared and will be able to fully run it, but mentally I'm feeling a little frazzled.

emoticonI have always been an emotional eater, so I'm focusing really hard on not letting the stress I'm feeling about this race *gulp* derail my nutrition and exercise this week. Just because I have a race on Friday does not mean I get to coast this week!

Here's the plan:

emoticon Use the nutrition tracker and stay within my daily guidelines (I do this every day, but this week is especially important!) On Thursday night and Friday morning I plan to "carb up" and eat toward the higher ends of my recommended carbs.

emoticonTonight (Sunday) I did a 2 mile run.

emoticonMonday Circuit training with Ms. Jillian

emoticonTuesday RUN. 3.1 miles.

emoticonWednesday Circuit training with Ms. Jillian

emoticonThursday REST. RELAX. Mentally prepare for the race.

emoticon emoticon emoticonFriday RUN THAT RACE! 6:30 PM start. It's chip-timed and all finishers get a medal. My husband is running it with me.

We'll be out of town for the run, so I won't be able to post pictures until I get home, but I'm hoping to hop on and give an update of how the race went!

I HAVE A PLAN, and that is 90% of the battle! emoticon

I am so proud of you!!!!! You're going to great emoticon It's not geeky to be nervous. I used to run cross country when I was in high school. Coach used to have us run 8-10 miles a day for practice. We only had to run 3.2 miles for a meet. My first run, I threw up on the first hill I was so nervous.

Reflections on a busy week

Saturday, April 10, 2010

I'm really not sure where this week went at all...it seemed it was gone in the blink of an eye.

emoticonI'll start with last Sunday, Easter. As I wrote earlier in the week, I chose not to track my food last Sunday for a few reasons. The first--that I had ZERO control over what was being prepared. Second--I was no where near a computer all day and trying to remember, well, I'm not so great at that. Third--I had the knowledge to make good choices, and I did. I had very controlled portions, I skipped the obviously not-good-for-me stuff, and focused on fruits and vegetables. It was a successful day for me because I was IN CONTROL and I knew I made good choices.

emoticon Wednesday was a very good day. I was forced to buy some clothes that fit me properly for something I had going on on Thursday. I went to the store and grabbed some jeans only to discover they were too big. I was giddy when I was able to pull the size 11's up over my hips and they zipped comfortably. I NEVER thought this day would come. WOO HOO!

emoticon Thursday brought a day of travel for my family and I. We brought snacks with us (pre-portioned for all of us!) and were able to stay in control! It was a powerful feeling to know that the FOOD wasn't anything for me to worry about. At lunch we went to a place called Sally's...one of my favorites from the days that our son was in the hospital, and one of my "triggers" for emotional eating. This place has THE BEST (read fattiest) burgers, waffle fries and seasoned sour cream. I had a moment of panic when we sat down and looked at the menu, but I started looking for healthier options. I decided on the garden veggie burger with fresh veggies and light ranch dressing on the side. GO ME!

emoticonExercise went well this week, too. I did 3 runs (3 miles, 2 miles, and 4 miles), I did 45 minutes of circuit training TWICE, plus I got a good long walk in, too.

emoticon Not sure what the scale will show tomorrow morning since it's that TOM and this is typically not a good week for me, but I know that I've done the best that I can and what will be will be.

What an accomplishing week for you. So very proud of you. Yeah, my weigh this week was hopefully off due to the end of my period. Just give yourself mental slack at your weigh in knowing that it is your TOM. Just tell yourself you did great and you did the best you could and next week will show it off. That's what I am hoping. I burned a little over 3000 calories this week and pushed it harder than I have in a long time. I pushed when i didn't want to and when I exercised I EXERCISED. So, I am really really hoping that it will show on the scale. I had a really bad eating day on Wednesday but for the most part everyday was pretty well in check and I averaged 10 cups of H2O daily. I hope to hear a good weight report from you, but either way you DID YOUR BEST AND YOUR BEST IS GREAT!
