Woke up and got things packed for the trip and enjoyed a breakfast of 2 eggs and a dry piece of homemade wheat bread. When Mike came over we went for an hour bike ride of varying speeds, enjoying some of the local trail. Then it was time for a healthy lunch of radish salad, taboule, and homemade guacamole on the fresh bread! Alas I am now at work and getting pumped to get this night and the next over so I can get to enjoying some vacation.

Found out today that the Green River is swollen out of its banks and not particularily safe for canoeing, so now its plan b, Arches NP, Canyonlands, NP, Goblin Valley SP, Mesa Verde NP, and any others that come up. Going to be hiking and camping and hopefully enjoying a healthy vacation. We're definitely disappointed about the river part, but we can look forward to doing it next year. There is still lots to see and do in Utah. Figure all the backpacking will do me some good anyway!

Just an overnight trip that started in Cascade, IA and traveled down the N. Fork of the Maquoketafor 23 miles. Day 1 was 8 miles, we got started to the starting point pretty much on time after dropping my car off at the Caven Bridge access. Then we had to load the canoe with overnight supplies and my 3 goofy dogs. It was a race down the river, okay at first rather slow going with a few dismounts to walk the boat through the shallow areas. I had a friend that had done the trip the previous weekend and didn't hit the shallows, but it looked like the river had dropped a couple feet fairly recently. Overall a very scenic trip with lots of wildlife, the dogs seemed to be enjoying floating down the river. At a confluence with Whitewater Creek, we found a decent sandbar to crash for the night. We unpacked the tent, made a fire, swam and fished. The dogs enjoyed being off leashes and swimming. We discovered Miss Maggie seems to have a puppy crush on Mike, its rather cute she adores him and follows him everywhere, and showed considerable concern when he was swimming. We enjoyed some taboule salad for dinner and shared a locally made Iowa wine. Then it was off to bed, 2 humans and 3 sandy dogs in a backpacking tent. We made it work.
Day 2 was 15 miles. The route was considerably less shallow but it did have choke points that created mini rapids which made it quite entertaining, especially since Mike and I are dorky enough to enjoy the mini rapids. Once again a day filled with wildlife. There was about a 5 minute thunderstorm that found us taking a bit of refuge on a sandbar where we enjoyed a quick snack. A couple miles down the river we found a great sandbar where we could relax, swim, fish etc. The dogs wore themselves out completely running a million laps back and forth. The humans on the other hand wore themselves out swimming.
Wildlife seen: juvenile duck learning to fly, a type of duck and 9 babies (not sure what type it was), beaver, mink, owl, several eagles, heron, deer, misc birds, fish.
Dogs spoiled: 3, but not rotten
Number that had fun: 5, 2 humans, 3 dogs!
Now its time to start prepping for 5 days on the Green River in Utah, its going to be a blast!

I didn't bring much for lunch so I attempted a sandwich from vendo and some pretzels, I knew the pretzels were going to blow the sodium but dang the sandwich put it through the roof, highlighting the need for me to meal plan better and have stuff ready to go before work. That being said and pointedly pointed out to me on my nutrition tracker. I am looking forward to a great weekend, I will be heading out to canoe on the N. Fork of the Maquoketa river, a scenic route, it will be a 2 day trip, 23 miles down river (may be a longer paddle if Whitewater canyon is passable. This is the practice run, if you will, for the Utah Green River trip (5 days 68 miles), which is in 10 days (can't wait). So yes I will be losing weight on vacation this year I'm sure! Time to stop blogging and get back to planning! Keep on Sparking!

Spent most of the day yesterday on the lake paddling in the new kayaks boy can you really get cruising and get a good workout. Paddled the entire lake not sure how far but it was also great for seeing wild life. We saw loons, geese (of course), and we came up to turtle heaven where at least 40 turtles were basking in the sun! After our initial paddle we fished from our kayaks, catching just enough blue gill to make a tasty little addition to dinner (so kayaking is double healthy). After departing the lake we continued "date day" by heading to the ballpark and catching the local team, they lost and we were getting chilly by the end of the game, but still fun. We followed this by red boxing a moving and getting a couple of beers. Overall a great day!!
