Good day so far!

Tuesday, August 03, 2010

I am really happy with myself today. It was humid and I didn't want to go out and run but I did, I rode my stationary bike for 30 minutes, ran 2miles, and then did some push ups and ab exercises. I have also eaten really well so far today! I have a friend that just got back from Costa Rica, and a friend in town from Florida on a business trip, I am really anxious to get off work and hang out with my friends!

FAIL blog but it has a happy ending

Monday, August 02, 2010

So I set out to run 18 miles this weekend, needless to say I did not accomplish this partially due to travel and not following nutrition and hydration that have kept me successful. The good news is I get another crack at it this weekend, I am a week ahead in my training schedule since I had already successfully completed some of the distances in earlier weeks due to my training for a half marathon. It doesn't throw my schedule for any loops and I did not fall behind. A lot of factors do go into the fact that my legs tanked out at around 12 miles, I nursed it to 13.5 before walking another 3 miles roughly I was disappointed but then had to remind myself of all the factors internal and external that I could have better controlled to make myself successful and I had to remind myself that 13 miles would have been thrilling to me in February when I first started running. While a little disappointed I know not everyday can be a success but we have to learn lessons from those failures and move on! So here's to me kicking 18 miles in the butt this coming weekend.

Chicago here comes the turtles! Rock n roll half for one turtle and 18 mile scenic tour for this turtle! My lack of motivation the past couple weeks has disappeared, I am rejuvenated. It doesn't hurt that I am getting a mini vacation 2 weekends in a row! Chicago this weekend and just a couple extra days off next weekend. A friend of mine is coming in from Florida too so that makes me extra excited...oh boy though Miami is gonna get a taste of blue collar middle America! Anyway got a lot of coffee to drink later so I can drive to Chicago right after work!

Junk miles

Sunday, July 25, 2010

I have a big week running-wise this week and I am going to be rather busy all week doing stuff to prepare for a trip to Chicago (doing some recon for October). So today was a junk mile day, where I just logged a 2 miler just to get something done. I guess it's nice that I consider that junk miles when not that long ago that was a struggle for me to even do. There is hope sparkfriends believe me, keep plugging away at your goals and you will go far. This week will be ending with an 18 mile run along Lake Michigan, and then I get to enjoy a little bit of Chicago that night, (normally do my long runs on Sunday but I am switching to Saturday so I can enjoy an adult beverage or 2 without sacrificing my run). Sunday I will be cheering on LEFTCIRCLES as he runs the Rock n roll half! I am also going to be scoping out the Marathon course, hitting the dog beach and enjoying the city! But before all that occurs I have to do a lot to get ready this week, dogs gotta go to the vet, oil has to get changed, super cleaning has to get done, mowing, get some of the packing done, well you get the picture, I wanna come home and be able to relax! Here's to a busy week!

I just read this blog and then went back and read your one from Fri. I am so inspired from your entries, especially because of your honesty about finding the groove or not having a run be what you want. I am in the process of trying to become a runner and hope to one day soon be able to run two miles. Then maybe at some point in the future I'll get in 18 miles (which I cannot FATHOM at this point!) So I just wanted to say thanks for your honesty- it is truly inspirational- and I look forward to continuing to read your blogs and follow your running progress. Thank you from a VERY beginner!

Not every run is a good run

Friday, July 23, 2010

Some days I set out on a run and I can not find the groove, that magic that normally seems to click is not working. My legs don't want to work, my arms seem to flop about as if they aren't part of my body, and not a single other muscle wants to do anything to stop me from looking and feeling like a total spazz. These are the days though to just relax and enjoy the scenery, these are not the days where the magic exists to make me seemlessly float through a run. So today I just got through it not record time, but I enjoyed the scenery, got to enjoy being baked by the sun for the first half and soaked the second half (thanks to Bonnie hanging out on the coast Iowa weather blows right now). I enjoy the struggle days, the lack of motivation days, the un-magical days, these are the days that I can look at and laugh about when I am having a magic day!

Ahhhh, the 'un' magical days ... wow, yep, lots of those for me. Your entry is very very very true .. I had a very unmagical day last Saturday evening when I did a 5K with about 1499 of my closest running friends .. in the 101 degree heat, in downtown Kansas City, looking straight into the sun. I hated life, and just wanted to be done that night (with the run, not life). I also had a 5K the following morning, less than 12 hours after crossing the finish line the night before in pure misery ... and had a very magical day. I was amazed, happy, thrilled, and loving life and running all over again. You are correct, we have to have those unmagical days to really appreciate the magical ones (and all of the others in between). I'm hoping for magical moments for tomorrow's 5K :)

Very interesting.. I wpi;d ;pve to be a runner, a serious runner, but advanced arthritis in both knees and COPD from 40 years of smoking.....I am not that much of a miracle worker. I run when I can, enough to give me an average 4.7 MPH when I set my mind to it. I have days when my legs feel like lead, and I never really gave them much thougt, just settled into a speed walk. Non-magic days are good also, they give us a chance to regroup and find our focusm see the world around us. We need the rough days, the days when thighs are just not right.....they help us appreciate the perfect ones.

And running in the high heat & humidity seems to make un-magical days happen more often.
