Today and an Early Half Marathon?

Thursday, April 22, 2010

This is going to be the last nice day for a little while, rain yuck! I took the pups out with me for a half mile walk and then a 1.5 mile jog I figure they will be kinda pent up this weekend so I sacrificed running the longer run to enjoy some time with them.
It looks like I will be doing a half marathon on May 8th so far it is looking like a go. Was thinking that it was May 9th Omg less time to be ready but I figure this way even if I have to walk the last 5 miles (I know I can do 8 miles) I will still have fun and enjoy the fitness and experience. My sister and I do about the same pace so we can enjoy the experience together.

I am looking forward to my race this weekend I will get a chance to spend time with my sister, brother in law, and niece. and the 5k will be a nice little warm up for that half! I am not gonna let the fact that it is supposed to rain bother me though.

Way to go. You can do this. There's no shame in walking for part of it. Running 8 miles is fantastic progress. I will be (walking most of) doing my first 5K this Saturday. I think it's supposed to rain Saturday, too. Anyway, you go, girl! :)

First 5k race coming up on Sunday

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

Really its just a training run that happens to be at a 5k race in Iowa City I still have to log a few miles after the race but it will be nice to get the experience of a race and will give me an idea how to plan for my upcoming half and full still wanna get another race in between the half and the full maybe the Bix7 although that might still be a little soon after my half, it would basically just be treated as another training run but the one thing I am not wild about is that course it is a hilly beast! Anyway will post results and fun stuff after the race hopefully I remember the camera and can get a few pics taken.

8 miles yeah I'm a slow runner but I'm still out there

Sunday, April 18, 2010

Did 8 miles today at a 13 minute mile pace yeah I know that I am a slow runner but you know what I am out there doing it and doing distances. I got told I was slow by someone at work who saw me while they were driving that I was running fast, hello 8 miles is not a sprint race duh and I didn't see your lazy but walking let alone running. I didn't let it bother me I was just like "yeah I'm getting a turtle tattoo to signify my slow running" Felt good today seem to be bouncing back from the low iron issue, remembered water today and took some powergel (yucky but have to start learning what works). I don't know about the powergel but the water helped me out it was a much better experience than the 7 miler without water. I am proud of myself and when I had the "I can't" moments during the run I would breathe in deep through my nose and out my mouth and repeat my legs are strong, my abs are strong, my lungs are strong, and my heart is good so just keep going!

8 Miles! What a great run. I am also a slow fat runner (fastest for me is 11 min miles). Just think how much faster we are than the guy sitting on the couch!

    I'm getting a turtle tattoo!

Let me know how your "learning" with powergels and stuff works. I haven't tried anything yet. I've been able to stash my poweraide around town and found a couple of places for water and potty breaks. I'm only up to 5 miles and not regularly, hard to have time with kids. Up at 6am for 4 mile run, but anything before is dark and our lovely town only has street lights on the main 1 mile drag - yeah, my town is 1 mile from end to end!

You are so awesome! You are making such improvements with your running. Like the others have said: How much did that person run today? Don't take what they said to heart. This trip is for you and you only. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Gosh, 8 miles! I'm tired just reaading about it. As the others have said, your speed doesn't matter, you went 8 miles! The speed will come in time, right now you're building your endurance.

I second everyone's comments - you are a rock star, and your pace/speed doesn't matter! You are doing so great, and I'm glad to hear that your iron levels are up and that your experimentation with water and simple carbs during your long runs is going well. Keep it up, SP buddy! :D

I too am slow. It would be nice if my speed increased over time...but I try to keep in mind the real reasons I am running. I am not doing any races or competitions, I am doing this for my heart, my cholesterol, & my bones. For these things, speed is irrelevant. Keep up the good work!

Dont let anyone get you down. I did a marathon last year. My goal was to do it in under 11 min miles. My actual was more like 12:30 min miles. I was bummed at first at how slow I was but then I realized, I ran a marathon! Who cares how long it took me!

Just remember your doing it for you so keep on going, no matter the pace.

8 miles? I'de be lucky if I could run 80 yards! Your blog was very inspirational. I am actually working on my running now using the Wii Fit Plus. Eventually, I look to get outside and do some running. And if I do 13 minutes average, then that'll be fine with me.
You are doing awesome. I may ask you sometime along the way some tips on how to improve my running if you don't mind!

Great job on running the 8 miles. I'd like to bet that the person that was driving by wouldn't last ONE mile out there.

Not that speed matters, but overtime you will get faster naturally. I stopped doing tempo runs and speedwork and I can't believe how much I have improved since last year.

Oh and powergel is nasty stuff. I couldn't even finish one powergel. I like GU's way better, give that a try. I love most of their flavors.

Hey, like you said, HE was driving, YOU were running!

Who cares about speed. Yes, I've had my fast moments, come in first in races, all of that, but it doesn't matter, every thing we all do is a personal best. You're not out there to race against anyone else. This is all about YOU, and if a 13 min mile is your pace, you go girl, YOU DID EIGHT MILES!! Some people don't like to DRIVE that far!

Anemia

Friday, April 16, 2010

Found out today I am really iron deficient. Good to know now once it gets under control a lot of symptoms will be going away including some of the stuff I have been attributing to my allergies, they were just symptoms that were intensified by the allergies.

I have recurring anemia (and have been mostly vegetarian for just over a decade, but unsure if they're technically related). I was taking a pretty strong iron supplement called Feosol under doctor's orders starting maybe 6 years ago and took it for almost 3 years before I stopped taking it (because my mom kept telling me I probably wasn't still anemic and iron supplements are dangerous). Since then I'd been turned away from donating blood about half the time I tried to because my number wasn't high enough. Duh. The idea that I was anemic again didn't really register again though, until I just found out again last month that according to my most recent bloodwork, I am indeed very anemic and doctor told me to take Feosol again and sort of yelled at me for stopping taking it, lol. She said if my numbers aren't better in two months I might need to get injections because my body might not be absorbing it correctly since this is a recurring problem. I have a hard time getting in my 60g of protein a day though, so that's not helping either.

Yeah, I'm borderline anemic too. I have to make sure to eat iron-rich foods every time I want to give blood or else my iron is too low and I can't donate. Somewhere at work I have a list of their suggested foods for boosting your iron. I'll find it and post it.

Yep, been there, done that! I was never a big meat eater and was always slightly anaemic. I now eat meat three times a week and voila! No worries! Before my pregnancies I was anaemic, as well, and I had to take a supplement. If you do, I would highly recommend Floradix. It's a plant-based iron supplement (in liquid form) that does not cause a lot of the problems that tablet-based ones do.

Good luck getting your iron back up! You will feel so much better when you do!

I was very anemic while pregnant...and now that I am no longer pregnant I am still anemic!! I find eating lots of spinach and other leafy greens was the best way to get it in my diet without taking the nasty pills (they made my stomach SO upset!)
Good Luck!!

Productive morning, now waiting on the rain

Thursday, April 15, 2010

Had my work physical today, it is nice get a free physical every year for work. I followed that with a quick bite of banana and a vegan protein bar (actually pretty good by Nugo) then went with my friend Yvonne and my puppies on a 2.5 mile walk, we followed that up with a healthy brunch of fruit salad, shrimp with summer veggies, and sweet potato cakes. I also got bills paid gonna go on a run later distance will be dictated by the allergies but it is supposed to rain today hopefully that will knock the pollen down.
