April showers bring May Flowers???

Tuesday, April 03, 2012

I love all those old rhymes that we learned as children and all the old adages. I guess because you know that at some point they originated with a grain of truth in them.
For me "April Showers bring May flowers" was always a sure sign that Spring was here. In reality...it all depends on where I lived as to whether or not that rhyme had truth in it. When we lived up north...April saw the ground still covered in feet of snow...and if there was any precipitation...it was more snow! Where I lived in BC...flowers were already poking up thru the ground and you were enjoying all the signs of April flowers. Where I live now, it's always a toss up as to whether or not the precipitation will be snow or rain. This year...even though the snow is pretty much all gone...there is still always that bit of a threat that we just might get more. There are signs of spring. The trees are beginning to awaken, and you know that a good rain would see all that brown grass come alive with green. So where am I going with all this...no where, just rambling *grin*

My positives:

A full day back at work yesterday and feeling good.
Although I have a week's worth of work to catch up on, I'm not stressing. It will get done as it gets done.
A good night's sleep last night. I love when I actually sleep right thru a night. Always a treat.
Spent some time out side on the deck after work yesterday keeping Quin's puppy company as she played in the yard. So nice to be out in the sunshine.
Blessed with life.

Have a great and wonderful day,
Hugs,
Wanda

Back to work.

Monday, April 02, 2012

I am on the end side of this head cold and heading back to work today. Last week was a write off at making my goals, but a plus on the side of allowing my body to heal and do it's magic at restoring itself. Sleep, lots of liquids and allowing my bodys natural healing processes works much better for me than attempting to take any kind of cold meds. I am well on the road to recovery YAY!

It's a very short work week for me, only the first three days of this week. Thursday is my "floater" day due to the Easter weekend. I will go in on Monday of next week, others will have Monday off. I can handle another 4 day weekend *grin*

The kids are all coming over for Easter dinner this coming weekend. We have a big turkey that was given to Garry that I will cook up for everyone. The girls are taking care of the veggie dishes and we will have a great meal I'm sure.

My positives:
The healing that the body can do when we allow our body to do what it does best.
Inner guidance.
Friends and family and their wonderful support and encouragement.
Work that allows me to take the time to heal.
So many blessings in my life, a new day, health, love and the list goes on.
Have a wonderful day, count your blessings, surprise yourself with how many you really have!

Hugs,
Wanda

Enjoy your short week and long weekend. You are sounding like you are feeling much better. We have sun today. Pearl and I are heading over to the gym this morning. Our building's water is going to be shut off at 9:30 this morning so they can repair a leak that happened over the weekend. Have a good Monday.

Hugs,
Shirl

Canadians...with excess milk kefir grains???

Sunday, April 01, 2012

I'm exploring all avenues in an attempt to find some milk kefir grains. Purchasing them from the states is not the quickest way to get my grains due to customs, but it's not a closed option. If there is anyone in Canada that has grains they are willing to ship, I'm willing to pay the costs. I know there are several people in Canada using kefir but many prefer "pick up only", which for me limits the possibilities unless it's someone in the Edmonton, Alberta area. The local health food store only carries the dry packaged culture, which is not the same. If you are able to help me out, please send an email.

Weather is not sure if it's wanting to rain or snow. We have a trace of white stuff on the ground and dark clouds overhead that look like they are filled with rain. The moisture will be great. I prefer the water type, but Mother Nature may not agree with me. I'm so anxious to get out in my gardens. My pear and apple trees show signs of budding already. I'm hoping that the cooler temps won't cause a problem for them. It's so early this year, but with the warm and lack of snow winter we had, it would be wonderful to have an extra month of growing season.

My positives:
I'm winning the battle with this very stubborn cold.
The kids were all over last evening, spend some time sitting around the firepit in the backyard before it got too cool.
Although this has been a write off week for getting my steps in, I'm not stressing about it. My body obviously needed the time to recover.
Today is a new day, a great day to be alive.

Have a wonderful Sunday,
Hugs,
Wanda

Round one "Cold", round two"Wanda"

Saturday, March 31, 2012

Woo Hoo, I slept through the night last night and woke up this morning breathing better than yesterday. I ended up staying home from work once again yesterday. At points through out the day, I wasn't sure if living was a great option or not, but kept drinking my lemon and honey and spent a bit of time outside on the back deck in the sunshine, avoided the "cold" medications and today I feel like I just might have gained the upper hand. I have to admit that the cold has moved down to my chest a bit, my sinuses are still a bit stuffed, but all in all, I'm feeling like I want to live.
I really do think that the cold meds prolong the symptoms, even if they temporarily assist.

I'm still trying to get my "milk Kefir grains". I have never heard back from the person that I contacted in Alberta. If anyone knows where I can get some milk kefir grains, I would be happy to pay any costs involved. I'm also looking for a Vinegar Pot so that I can make my own vinegar, any leads would be appreciated, and finally...I'm looking for "Kombocha" culture. I know these are all readily available in the states, but seem to be hard to find in Canada. If anyone knows of Canadian contacts, I would appreciate the information. They items are legal in Canada. Thanks for any help you can offer.

My positives:
I'm winning round two of the battle with this cold.
Today, I'm grateful that I am alive **grin*
A great night's sleep last night.
A short visit with Shyra yesterday when she dropped off my library books that were on hold.
Sunshine and warm enough temperatures to leave the door open for a bit yesterday. Nothing like being able to air out your home after a winter of being closed up.
So blessed.

Have a great and wonderful day,
Hugs,Wanda

Wanda - if you are able to get plain kombucha in the health store you can make your own mother scobi just by taking out the little jelly bit at the bottom with about a cup of the kombucha and putting it into a wide-mouth glass or ceramic container (it needs to have a wide mouth so you can get it out once it's grown). Then you need to make tea w sugar (let it cool completely) then cover it with layers of cheesecloth to keep dust and bugs out and place it in a warm-ish place to grow. There are recipes on-line on how to do this. I don't have my book with me here in Paris - I loaned it to a friend. The Wild Fermentation book has instructions. It could take about a month to grow a good mother scobi which will look like a rubbery cover on the liquid ... then you lift it out with some of the liquid and begin again in the same manner except this time - in about 4 days you should have drinkable kombucha - just keep making your kombucha and peeling off the bottom layer of the scobi and using it for yet another batch (the one on the bottom is a new mother) ... eventually the old mother will get composted when it's no longer as efficient.

As for kefir - it's really difficult to get the grains in Canada - none of us have been able to get anyone who has them to forward them on ... I've found kefir water here in Paris - not sure if I can get grains here and what the process would be for transporting grains home - I'm looking into it though.

As for vinegar pots - here's a post w some sites in the States http://img4.sunset.com/static/pdf/O
neBlock_Vinegar.pdf
and on this article there's a shot of a white ceramic pot w a spout and I've seen these in our health food stores as containers used for keeping water in on the counter so you could probably purchase one of those to use

Other than that from what I understand you can use any wide glass jar (not mason jars as they're too narrow but a demi john with a wide middle would work and then keep it in a cardboard box and a dark place using clean cotton, linen or layers of cheese cloth to keep bugs out ...

GOOD LUCK

If only I were around to relate, my soul sister. I, too, am fighting off a nasty infection. Finally went to enlist the help of some antibiotic and steroid. Tried all the old fashioned stuff for 2 weeks, and since I have no "sick days" I needed help. I have not wanted to have to get a sub for the sub. I was privileged to be asked to fill in for a teacher while she recovers from an accident and a stroke.. Originally I was told the job would be until the end of the school year, but the teacher is anxious to try and recover and return. Anyway, my friend. I just wanted to let you know that I love you, I think of you often and I look forward to reconnecting with you soon. The other day I said to myself, " I need to get me one of those international calling cards!" Hope I get around to it before too long! Take care of that cold. Give it the boot! Treat yourself well.
Much Love!
Nancy

Glad you are feeling some better, just take it easy. The movie was different and had an ending none of us was expecting. I'd like to go see Mirror Mirror with Julia Roberts, I like her and it's playing downtown so just maybe I'll go see it. It was nice to see my sis and two nieces, we did go to lunch at Applebee's. I know our health food stores over here have the kifer, I don't know if they have it in grain form and don't know about the other stuff. Be nice to yourself this weekend.

Hugs,
Shirl

I am going to win!

Thursday, March 29, 2012

I am going to win in the battle between cold vs Wanda! It has been many years since I've had a cold like this. My husband is so generous with his sharing *grin*

Still stuffed up good, but I am going to make an attempt to head into work this morning. Whether or not I last the whole day remains to be seen. I feel like I might actually "live" today, so that is a big plus.

Thankfully my desk is separated somewhat from everyone else and warnings not to come to close should work. I have some things that need to be cleaned up by month end and I didn't have a chance to brief anyone else on what needs to be done.

Thank you Shirl. Estelle and Lexie for all you kind words and healing thoughts.

Have a wonderful day,
Hugs,
Wanda
