Round one "Cold", round two"Wanda"

Saturday, March 31, 2012

Woo Hoo, I slept through the night last night and woke up this morning breathing better than yesterday. I ended up staying home from work once again yesterday. At points through out the day, I wasn't sure if living was a great option or not, but kept drinking my lemon and honey and spent a bit of time outside on the back deck in the sunshine, avoided the "cold" medications and today I feel like I just might have gained the upper hand. I have to admit that the cold has moved down to my chest a bit, my sinuses are still a bit stuffed, but all in all, I'm feeling like I want to live.
I really do think that the cold meds prolong the symptoms, even if they temporarily assist.

I'm still trying to get my "milk Kefir grains". I have never heard back from the person that I contacted in Alberta. If anyone knows where I can get some milk kefir grains, I would be happy to pay any costs involved. I'm also looking for a Vinegar Pot so that I can make my own vinegar, any leads would be appreciated, and finally...I'm looking for "Kombocha" culture. I know these are all readily available in the states, but seem to be hard to find in Canada. If anyone knows of Canadian contacts, I would appreciate the information. They items are legal in Canada. Thanks for any help you can offer.

My positives:
I'm winning round two of the battle with this cold.
Today, I'm grateful that I am alive **grin*
A great night's sleep last night.
A short visit with Shyra yesterday when she dropped off my library books that were on hold.
Sunshine and warm enough temperatures to leave the door open for a bit yesterday. Nothing like being able to air out your home after a winter of being closed up.
So blessed.

Have a great and wonderful day,
Hugs,Wanda

Wanda - if you are able to get plain kombucha in the health store you can make your own mother scobi just by taking out the little jelly bit at the bottom with about a cup of the kombucha and putting it into a wide-mouth glass or ceramic container (it needs to have a wide mouth so you can get it out once it's grown). Then you need to make tea w sugar (let it cool completely) then cover it with layers of cheesecloth to keep dust and bugs out and place it in a warm-ish place to grow. There are recipes on-line on how to do this. I don't have my book with me here in Paris - I loaned it to a friend. The Wild Fermentation book has instructions. It could take about a month to grow a good mother scobi which will look like a rubbery cover on the liquid ... then you lift it out with some of the liquid and begin again in the same manner except this time - in about 4 days you should have drinkable kombucha - just keep making your kombucha and peeling off the bottom layer of the scobi and using it for yet another batch (the one on the bottom is a new mother) ... eventually the old mother will get composted when it's no longer as efficient.

As for kefir - it's really difficult to get the grains in Canada - none of us have been able to get anyone who has them to forward them on ... I've found kefir water here in Paris - not sure if I can get grains here and what the process would be for transporting grains home - I'm looking into it though.

As for vinegar pots - here's a post w some sites in the States http://img4.sunset.com/static/pdf/O
neBlock_Vinegar.pdf
and on this article there's a shot of a white ceramic pot w a spout and I've seen these in our health food stores as containers used for keeping water in on the counter so you could probably purchase one of those to use

Other than that from what I understand you can use any wide glass jar (not mason jars as they're too narrow but a demi john with a wide middle would work and then keep it in a cardboard box and a dark place using clean cotton, linen or layers of cheese cloth to keep bugs out ...

GOOD LUCK

If only I were around to relate, my soul sister. I, too, am fighting off a nasty infection. Finally went to enlist the help of some antibiotic and steroid. Tried all the old fashioned stuff for 2 weeks, and since I have no "sick days" I needed help. I have not wanted to have to get a sub for the sub. I was privileged to be asked to fill in for a teacher while she recovers from an accident and a stroke.. Originally I was told the job would be until the end of the school year, but the teacher is anxious to try and recover and return. Anyway, my friend. I just wanted to let you know that I love you, I think of you often and I look forward to reconnecting with you soon. The other day I said to myself, " I need to get me one of those international calling cards!" Hope I get around to it before too long! Take care of that cold. Give it the boot! Treat yourself well.
Much Love!
Nancy

Glad you are feeling some better, just take it easy. The movie was different and had an ending none of us was expecting. I'd like to go see Mirror Mirror with Julia Roberts, I like her and it's playing downtown so just maybe I'll go see it. It was nice to see my sis and two nieces, we did go to lunch at Applebee's. I know our health food stores over here have the kifer, I don't know if they have it in grain form and don't know about the other stuff. Be nice to yourself this weekend.

Hugs,
Shirl

Glad you are on the mend...
Good luck! Hope you find the items you're looking for. Have you tried Ebay or Craig's list?
Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy that fresh air... we've passed spring and heading into summer here already. Temps are getting hotter and hotter each day.

I am going to win!

Thursday, March 29, 2012

I am going to win in the battle between cold vs Wanda! It has been many years since I've had a cold like this. My husband is so generous with his sharing *grin*

Still stuffed up good, but I am going to make an attempt to head into work this morning. Whether or not I last the whole day remains to be seen. I feel like I might actually "live" today, so that is a big plus.

Thankfully my desk is separated somewhat from everyone else and warnings not to come to close should work. I have some things that need to be cleaned up by month end and I didn't have a chance to brief anyone else on what needs to be done.

Thank you Shirl. Estelle and Lexie for all you kind words and healing thoughts.

Have a wonderful day,
Hugs,
Wanda

Another day at home in bed.

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

This head cold is a real dozzy. It is making an attempt to head into my chest, so lemon and honey is the drink of the day. My bed will not see me far from it.
I am hoping that another day of resting and tending to this cold will see me able to head back to work tomorrow. Time will tell.

Have a great day,
Hugs,
Wanda

Oh dear - looks like you do have to give in and dive under the covers - hope you are able to get some good rest and turn that 'thing' around on it's head ASAP as you do with everything else. Your body wins - it wants a rest - that's how I look at it. Hope you are feeling a whole lot better really soon. emoticon

Work can get along without you one more day, it sounds like it really hit you hard. I'll take care of the quote of the day again tomorrow, and if Mauri doesn't get to the daily challenge Thur. I'll take care of it, I know she's a very busy lady and doesn't always have the time to do it. Rest and get to feeling better, don't push it.

Hugs,
Shirl

Head colds...yay!

Tuesday, March 27, 2012

I woke up this morning completely stuffed up, my ears are plugged and my head feels like it weighs a ton. Sent off an email to my co-workers telling them I was going back to bed, hopefully see them tomorrow.

I slept until 9:30 am and then had to get up to answer the phone. Thought I had better, drop in here too and let you know that I'm under the weather today.

Have a good day all,
Hugs,
Wanda

Praying this doesn't last too long before you are back to feeling like your old self. I took care of Tuesday daily challenge and quote of the day for you. If you don't feel like it I can do them tomorrow too, if when I get on I don't see your post I'll just do it for you. Take care, my friend.

Hugs,
Shirl

Yay, leg pain gone, sorta!

Monday, March 26, 2012

Whatever I did to my groin muscle on Saturday seems to have corrected itself. Just a slight twinge with certain movements, otherwise, I am doing great. YAY.

I did get my steps in yesterday. I took things easy though and only did a few at a time. Took me all day, but I did get those steps in. *grin*

I need to start back up with some upper body exercises though. My tops are not fitting me the way they used to, which means those muscles are not getting the work out that they need to stayed toned.

A new week filled with meetings and then a very short week the following week. I get Thurs, Friday and the weekend off due to Easter. It's hard to believe that Easter is just around the corner. Where is this year going???

My positives:
A good weekend, with forced rest.
My groin muscle has healed itself quickly. Thank you healing angels.
I just might be able to start walking outdoors on my lunch break. The ice and snow are clearing off the sidewalks nicely.
Blessed with so much.

Have a great and wonderful day.
Hugs,
Wanda

Bodies are such funny creatures. If you work on one area, then the rest goes, LOL. Glad to hear you are not in pain anymore. My steps I don't think were very high yesterday, but hopefully I will make up for it this week with my 5K walk/jog program. Have a great week!
