Green tomatoes!

Wednesday, September 14, 2011

Frost warnings were issued for our area last night. I headed out to the garden to start picking tomatoes. I didn't want to lose them to the frost. My counters in the kitchen are now covered with containers of green tomatoes. I'm very hopeful that many of them will ripen and I can make tomato sauce and salsa with them, the ones that don't will be turned into relish. I have two batches that look like they might be ready for me to can by tomorrow and with good fortune the rest will be ready by the weekend.

It dipped down pretty cold last night as the furnace kept coming on and I have the temperature set to only 19! Arrgghh, I'm not looking forward to winter!

My positives:

A great email from our granddaughter yesterday.
Although I had to pick the rest of my tomatoes green, at least I will have saved them from the frost.
My root veggies that are still in the ground will be good yet for a bit. Will try and get them all dug up this weekend.
Blessed with the ability to can and preserve.
Almost time to bring the crockpot back out as a permanent appliance on my countertop.
Seeing my cold storage room filling up with jars of yummy things to eat.
Slept through the night once again. Woo Hoo that is twice this week.
Being blessed with another day of life.

Have a wonderful day, be happy.

Hugs,
Wanda

I just googled ripening tomatoes and found out ... Green fruit will ripen in about two weeks at 65 to 70 degrees F, and in about 3-4 weeks at 55 degrees F. Storage below 50 degrees F will give fruit a bland, off flavor.

Also found out that tomatoes will ripen more quickly if they are in with some ripe ones already since the ethane gas helps the rest get going ... you can cover them in a paper bag or box since they don't need light to ripen.

This is all information I did not know. Maybe this will give you some additional time for other things but I realize you are probably just itching to dive in and can. Sounds like you do have a batch to work on though.

Kudos on sleeping! I've got some great meditation tapes I zonk right out to - they really seem to help. I use them in mid-afternoon to think away a pain and it just goes (I question none of it - it works - good rest helps)! emoticon

Slept through the night is a beautiful positive isn't it? I retired Oct. 19 2010 from a high end corporate position that involved most nights away from home. Only within the last two months have I started to actually unwind and relax enough to sleep 8-10 hours. It is such a blessing.

Fall is in the air!

Tuesday, September 13, 2011

Fall is definitely making a rapid appearance. Our two weeks of summer are on the way to being just a memory!
Each morning as I get up, I'm checking to see if frost is on the ground. I'm thinking I am going to have to pick my tomatoes very soon whether they are fully ripe or not. I know that they will ripen in the house, but they just taste so much better when they get to ripen on the vine.
Pulled some more yummy carrots from the garden yesterday for snack at work today.

Not much to report today. It was a usual Monday at work and a quiet time at home.

My positives:

A great night's sleep last night...YAY. I woke up this morning to the knowledge that I had actually slept through the night.
It is looking like I will achieve this week's goal...more of my garden is getting harvested each day.
I have a nice healthy container of fresh carrots to take with me to work.
I resisted the goodies that were brought in to work yesterday.
I am holding steady and staying on track.

Have a wonderfully blessed day,
Hugs,
Wanda

I hope the cold holds back long enough for your tomatoes to ripen on the vine. It must be tricky with such a short growing season. :-)

We've had very warm, humid weather for the last three days, but that's about to change, our winds are going to be coming out of the NE,hmmmmm wonder were that could be coming from, lol, and Thurs. night Fri. morning there just might be frost, alas I do believe summer is going to be leaving us, what little of it that you had. I want a lovely, long fall, that would be so nice.

Enjoy your evening hope you have some days were you can still sit and enjoy your deck.

Hugs

The Summer that wasn't ... WOW how does that happen ... it amazing your tomatoes even made it this far and that you even have pepper plants to bring inside!

There are some cool loving plants - kale (make great kale chips) ... but they may take over your garden and you'd have to move because they'd do SO well in those temps! Have a great week. emoticon emoticon emoticon

I hope your tomatoes get some sun to cap off your successful gardening season. All two weeks of your summer! That threw me for a loop. We are expected to experience a record high of 101 degrees today! I'm looking forward to my 2 weeks of WINTER! Enjoy your Tuesday and keep up the good work.
Love,
Nancy

September 12

Monday, September 12, 2011

It was a regular Winnie the Pooh sort of day outdoors yesterday. The wind was on the blustery side, the skies were overcast and rain was intermittent.

A lazy day at our household. We were finally able to get the third coat of stain on the wood counter top. It took forever for the second coat to dry...we think that it may have been due to how hot it had been weatherwise and the humidity in the air. Once this coat is dry we can begin putting the final gloss coat on and hopefully be able to install the counter top right quick. This feels like the project that never ends! *grin*

I managed to get all my pearl onions peeled and ready to pickle. That will be added to the canning as soon as I get my jars of salsa ready. Hopefully in the next couple of days.

This week will see I think, the finally clean-up in the garden. Weather forecast is calling for sunshine this week, but frost in the evenings. I just might have to pick all the tomatoes ripe or not.

My positives:

A great weekend of family time and relaxing.
A mostly successful Week 2 for Septembers goals.
Gearing up for a busy canning week.
How blessed our family is.
Although my sleep last night was not the best, I'm ready to face the day.
Friends, family and God in my life.

Have a wonderful day. You have the choice of a positive attitude...or a negative one!

Hugs,
Wanda

Cool today with overcast skies

Sunday, September 11, 2011

It's a cool one today with overcast skies. We are supposed to have mid 20's temperatures yet for next week. I'll be watching things closely as I still have things in the garden that need time.

I did get some tomato sauce made yesterday and it looks great in the jars...here's hoping it tastes great too!
Not enough of my romas were ready yet to tackle the salsa. Hopefully during the week they will be. I went for groceries yesterday, so I have all the fixings for making it, just waiting on the Romas.

The girls came over last evening and we spent the evening out on the deck until it got too cold. Did a lot of star gazing which was fun.

Not much to report today.

My positives:

A start on the tomato preserves...Yay.
A great visit with the girls.
A SKYPE call with Quin yesterday morning.
I achieved my Week 2 goal for September. Now it's on to Week 3 while continuing to keep the goals I've already made.
Made some progress with the basement. Hopefully we will be able to call to have the carpet installed very soon.
A new day ahead to enjoy.

Have a great and wonderful day,
Hugs,
Wanda

Wanda - Thanks for such a lovely comment on my blog this morning. I was tickled beyond belief to read the documentations of gardening on your blog ... you know we're both fully addicted now right!

[This year I managed to keep all my tags in place during the tomato planting and to properly plan & document where each of my 76 tomatoes went in the garden ... and it all made sense, exotics together, pastes together, cherries together, etc. Then when I went to get the Master Sheet copied & laminiated - I misplaced it. ]

It's one of the most surprising and best things I've ever decided to do. I am so very glad you are enjoying it so much, too. There is so much to learn (not the least of which, for me, is to not lose the list of where I've planted what) and I'll bet it's added many wonderous (and I don't mean wondering what kind of tomato I'm eating either) years to our lives as well.
LOL

Technology can be a real blessing.

Saturday, September 10, 2011

I'm loving technology today. I turned on my computer this morning and it started beeping away at me. I realized that I had a phone call coming in through SKYPE. Yay, I got to talk to my son first thing this morning. I haven't talked to him for several weeks.
I'm amazed at how well it works. I choose not to answer with video this morning as I had just got up and didn't want to scare him! *grin*

I'm heading out to the garden shortly to see if I have enough tomatoes ripened to do some preserving. If not yet, then I'll start the other household chores and drive Garry to work so that I can go for groceries. Having one vehicle has been working out pretty good for us. I actually hope that we can keep it up over the winter months. So much less expensive having only one insurance and one gas bill.

Shyra and her boyfriend came over last evening and spent time with Garry and I out on the back deck enjoying conversation and being outdoors. I have been informed that our deck will be the gathering place again tonight. Woo Hoo. I love that the girls enjoy spending time with us.

My positives:
Weather forecast says one more week ahead of us of nice temperatures before it takes a nose dive. Yay...time to get all my garden in.
Skype...what a great invention. Got to talk with Quin this morning.
It's the weekend and now it's my schedule for getting things done.
Being alive to enjoy all the blessings and learning experiences that come my way.

Have a great day. Smile and enjoy life.

Hugs,
Wanda

Hope you have a wonderful Sunday Wanda!!!!

Making the most of the technology! Good for you. I had a nice day of subbing yesterday. I was a bit apprehensive about making my way back into that mode, but as usual, the fears were unwarranted. Right now I'm stalling on getting into my sewing, so with that confession I will be signing off and getting to work. Have a wonderful day and thanks for sharing your positive energy. Very refreshing!
Love,
Nancy
