Happy Summer Solstice

Tuesday, June 21, 2011

Today is always as two pronged type of day for me. On one hand it's now officially summer and on the other hand, although it is the longest day of the year, the knowledge that the days will be getting shorter just isn't a nice one. The dark days of winter are just not my favorite time. Now if I was a bear and could sleep them away, perhaps I would change my mind *grin*.
So for today, I will enjoy the fact that we are supposed to get 17.(something) of daylight. How much of that we will see with all these rain clouds still hanging around is debatable. Oh, don't I sound like Miss Gloomy! I'm thinking an attitude adjustment is needed. I NEED SOME SUNSHINE!

My positives:
Only the ceiling and one wall left to paint in the LR/DR. YAY, almost done.
It's not raining at the moment.
The birds are singing, and reminding me that I could be too!
I have my health, I'm able to be active.
I have the opportunity to make today into a wonderful day.

Hugs,
Wanda

Come on Grey! Time to shift! Wanda's garden has enough water for a while! :-)

I like the Midsummer Solstice because it means Autumn is that much closer, but I certainly understand your less than enthusiasm for winter in the circumstances :-)

Thinking of building an Ark!

Monday, June 20, 2011

And yet another day of heavy raining....building an ark is becoming a really good thought!

The ground is so saturated in my back yard that when you walk on it, you leave footprints and that is in the grass! Very grateful that we have two sump pumps in the sump hole in the basement because they have been able to keep up with all this run off.

On the other hand, my garden, especially my potatoes are really loving all this moisture. I told Garry we really need to get our rain barrel hooked up as well as possibly get a couple more. All this rain water would be nice to have on dry days.

Garry arrived home yesterday afternoon from Saskatchewan. He brought a truck load of stuff home that we now need to find a place for. What a blessing though. The things that he brought home are things that we had on our wish list of items we would someday like to have. We now have a snowblower (it's a homemade one that Garry's dad built and apparently works fantastic) and a heavy duty generator that will power our furnace and such in the event of a power failure.YAY! Garry and his siblings cleaned out and organized the garage for his folks. On direction from their dad, they all divided up what each wanted and the rest will go into a garage sale that they are going back for this coming weekend. Garry's brother Lyle, has stayed behind this week to be there for their Mom and to also get things ready for the sale. It's great that their Dad is able to make these decisions and see them carried out while he is still with us.

I got plastering and sanding done yesterday, did some touch ups to spots this morning. Got two walls completely painted (two coats) and will finish off today. I am not a ladder person, so doing the painting was a challenge for me as we have vaulted ceilings. I'm proud of myself for getting it done though. One less chore for Garry to have to worry about. Besides, I can now start moving furniture back in there once the painting is complete. I'm glad that I have today off work to hopefully finish the painting. Even though I'm using low voc paint and leaving windows and doors open, I'm having a few issues with the chemical smells. But I just keep reminding myself..." this too shall pass" *grin*

My positives:

Garry home safe and sound.
The blessings of having two items crossed off our wish list.
Being able to accomplish the painting of the LR/DR.
A visit with the girls yesterday.
God, who supplies all our needs.

Have a wonderful day,
Hugs,
Wanda

It sounds like you get a lot accomplished this weekend and today. It is nice that your FIL is getting to see the things done that he wanted taken care of, I am sure that will help his peace of mind. Well our weather forecast is calling for heavy rains and very windy beginning this evening possibly through Thursday. Do you have a row boat at the ready, just in case, lol. You have a wonderful evening. I am home at the moment but will be heading back out to DD's soon.

Hugs,
Shirl

    *passes the wood and nails*
Hope things ease in the rain department soon. We are going from one extreme to the other here at the moment. :-) Mind you, the drought is over! LOL

My poor sump pumps are getting a work out.

Saturday, June 18, 2011

The rain hasn't stopped and it's still coming down hard. The ground outside is so saturated now that my pole with hanging plants is now lying on the ground. Luckily my plant pots didn't tip over as they came down. It appears that as the pole started tipping the pots just came out and settled upright on the ground. We have lovely winds that are beginning now too. No sitting on the deck for me today!

Garry left yesterday afternoon to Saskatchewan, I can now concentrate on getting some things done around here....plastering, sanding and I might even tackle making an attempt at painting. All depends on whether or not I can leave windows and doors open while I'm doing it.

Laundry is on the go, my LR/DR floor is all washed for about the 3rd time. All that dust from sanding makes for dusty floors. I like to get it up quickly otherwise it gets tracked everywhere else.

My positives:
Found a super book that I want to add to my own collection: How to Grow Food By Richard Gianfrancesco
I'm slowly turning the chaos in my house into organization.
The renos that we have been doing are bringing the house into this century.
I have Monday off work.
Life, family and friends.

Have a wonderful Saturday,
Hugs,
Wanda

Hi Wanda, so you still have the water works going, hope you get a break soon. We've had a busy weekend, with lots of fun things, car show, music and watching hot air balloons taking off. GS and I took DH to Applebee's for lunch then came back to our place and watched a movie. Enjoy your Monday off.

Hugs,
Shirl

An interesting observation

Friday, June 17, 2011

I had to chuckle to myself as I made this observation. Our weather that we are having is much like my life has been the past little while...all over the place! Sunny, scattered showers, tornado warnings, heavy rainfalls and all of that interspersed with signs of growth, green and weeds. *grin*

We need the "dark" periods in order to really appreciate the "sunny" periods". Do you ever notice that after a dark, rainy period, things look so much brighter and there is new growth? Then the sunny period and warmth come out and you bask in all that it offers. After awhile you begin to get comfortable in it and perhaps even a little complacent. You come to a point where too much sun and warmth causes things to begin to die or at the least stop growing and producing.
We need those dark and rainy periods in order to grow and expose the "weeds" in our lives.

Just an interesting observation on my part this morning that made me smile as I look out the window at yet another "rainy" day. Yesterday contained tornado watches and heavy rainfall warnings. But as I look out my window, I see my plants thriving and growing, life is not so bleak and we are "weathering" the storms going on in our lives at the moment. I know that the future holds the promise of sunshine and warmth and that things are in God's control. Yes, the choices I make are mine and mine alone. But God is always there to offer me support and strength.

My positives:
My observation allowed me to put things into a perspective that makes sense to me.
Smiling, knowing that although my life might feel all over the place, there really is a pattern to it.
Garry and all his siblings being able to gather together this weekend with their father.
It's fabulous Friday and I have Monday off work also.
A weekend to look forward to. Time to organize and tidy things up.
Being blessed with guidance.

Have a wonderfully Fabulous Friday,
Hugs,
Wanda

Yes, when the rain and dark clouds roll away and the sun comes shinning through we smile and appreciate the radiance from the sun. I hope you have a peaceful and relaxing weekend. It is great that Gary and his siblings will be spending Father's Day with their father.

A repeat of last summer????

Thursday, June 16, 2011

Are we having a repeat of last summer?? It hasn't stopped raining and we are in for even more heavy rain warnings. Siggghhhh. Not that I don't appreciate the good earth getting a nice drink of rain, but enough already! My sump pump is working it's little heart out. I'm so glad that we had the second sump pump installed to kick in should the first one die from over working. I do not need the basement flooded again.
Although if that were to happen, it would not do much damage as the repair work still hasn't been done from this spring!

Garry needs to be able to travel to Saskatchewan this weekend also. I'm going to stay at home as there will be a very full house with all Garry's siblings arriving. The other spouses are not going either, so I don't feel so bad about not being there. Instead I will tackle some unfinished projects around the house.

My Positives:
Everything looks so green and fresh outside with all this rain. Nothing like a good wash to get rid of dust and grime.
Quin's girlfriend phoned last evening to pass on a message from Quin. He arrived safe and sound up north and is busy getting the lodge all opened and ready for the fishing season. *grin* Mom and Dad have now taken a back seat to Afton, we are no longer the first in line to hear from him...yep she looks like a keeper. *grin*
Had a great chat and spirit lifting with my massage therapist yesterday afternoon. Oh yeah, the massage was great too!
Talked to a "nursery" that carries pear trees, they are expecting a shipment in a couple of weeks of the type of pear tree I'm interested in. I want a Ure pear tree, so maybe that will get added to my garden this year too!
I'm amazed at how much my tomato plants have grown. They are really loving this rain.
Family, friends and God's guidance in my life.

Have a wonderful Thursday,
Hugs,
Wanda

I am also wondering if we are going to have a damp, cool summer, I hope not. Prayers for safe travel for Gary and his siblings. Enjoy your peacful weekend. I'll be packing and heading off to DD's this evening, A.J. and I will be coming in to eat some meals with DH during the next 11 days. I hope you get some sunshine sometime this weekend.

Hugs,
Shirl
