Working on making my indoor swimming pool only a memory...

Wednesday, April 13, 2011

Yesterday was an interesting day to say the least. I arrived home early from work to meet up with the repair man for my washer. Yay, nothing major, quickly fixed. My washer and dryer are on the main floor, so life was pretty normal at this point.
I decided to have some "me time" seeing as I was home early from work. A nice hot bath sounded perfect. Only problem was, I realized that I was crawling into a bathtub with very little hot water, hmmmm. I figured all the winds that we have been having might have some how created a draft in the basement enough to blow out the pilot light on the water heat. Downstairs I go to check it out. Nope, no winds created what I encountered. My basement was flooded!
We assume that sometime during the night, our poor sump pump burnt itself out trying to keep up with all the winter run off outside. Well, once it stopped working, it no longer was keeping the water table from rising in our basement. Oh joy...an indoor pool, just what I've always dreamed about.(tongue in cheek)

To make a long story short...I'm off work today as I wait for the insurance and clean-up people to arrive. The plus side...most of our things are in plastic bins, on shelves or on rolling trolleys(which Garry just built about 3 weeks ago and got stuff stored on that is under the crawl space). We still need to get under the crawl space completely to see about clearing any water that will not drain, but that is minor. Our son had moved all his furniture out prior to the flood, so no damage there. Only a few boxes that had Christmas stuff in them, but generally it appears to only be the boxes themselves that are damaged, not what was in them.
I'm thinking that all the flooring might have to be replaced, unless they can be dried out, but I guess that is up to the insurance people. The walls have soaked up water and those will definitely need to be re done. At the moment, we are contemplating doing it ourselves, as Garry thinks this might be a good opportunity to re-work the layout in the basement and create a cold storage room in the area that the sump pump is. We could then keep carpet off that area as well as see about build a bit of a retaining wall around that area to keep any possible flood water from entering the rest of the basement. We'll see what insurance decides.

My positives:

My washer and dryer are on the main floor, so no damage to them.
Our son's furniture was all moved out, so once again no damage there.
Most of our items were raised off the floor and those that weren't were in plastic storage bins.
Perhaps this is the opportunity/catalist that we need to rework the layout in the basement.
It's only materials things that have been water logged, no loss of life.
New sump pump appears to be working great.
No stressing on whether to keep things or not...the decision has been made...wet...it goes. Dry it stays! *grin*
I am actually amazed at how calm I am....my mantra of "I choose to live in Easy World where all things are easy" is working overtime, but it feels good to know that God is in charge.

Have an awesome day...I will.

Hugs,
Wanda

April 12 and all is well

Tuesday, April 12, 2011

I feel like an old time towncrier this morning as I tried to come up with a blog entry title *grin*

Very busy day at work yesterday and most likely for the next few days. My selectors have finally twigged to the realization that I will be away from April 20 to May 9th. If they want items ordered they have to get them in to me now.

I have to leave work early today as my washing machine repair man is coming to fix my machne. They can never give you a set time, only that he will be here sometime between 1 and 3 pm! Oh well, two bonuses to this one...I get to leave work early and my machine will be fixed *grin*

My positives:

I picked up more reading material yesterday. I have a lovely stack of books to work my way through once again.
Although the temperatures have dropped once again, there is still sunshine for part of the day. Even the news that we might have snow Wed and Thurs, is tolerable...you know it's not going to last as the weekend promises to be very nice.
Being busy at work, makes the day go by so much faster.
Meeting a friend after work tomorrow for a visit.
Getting off work early today and getting my machine fixed..the biggest plus is that it is all covered by warranty!
Life in general...it's good to wake up each morning knowing that it's a new day, a new opportunity to be creative.

Have a wonderful Tuesday,
Hugs,
Wanda

Hope you enjoy your afternoon off. Sounds like it may be a good time to READ. My computer is "better". Mary fiddled with it and got it going yesterday. Marketable skill, perhaps? (my floundering girl. An Olympic trial in patience and tolerance. I'm going for the Gold Medal here.)
Have a lovely afternoon. Those holidays are right around the corner.
Love,
Nancy

Double digit days, single digit temperatures.

Monday, April 11, 2011

This month is zipping by, we are already into the double digit days of April. Unfortunately the temperatures are still in the very low single digits. We dip down to below zero at night but at least during the daytime we are above zero, barely, but still above zero. Makes it nippy out when I head for work, but at least sunshine when I head home.

I have to leave work early tomorrow, as my washing machine repair man is coming sometime between 1 and 3pm. My machine has been acting up lately and while it's still on warranty...it's time to have it looked at.

A busy week this week at work, lots of meetings as well as my MRI on Thursday. YAY.

My goal this week...to use my lunch break and get some walking in. The walking paths are all clear now and as long as it's nice out....why not put the good weather to good use!

My positives:
Finding my motivation once again. It's been a very long winter and it's time to get outdoors once again.
Only 8 more working days until it's holiday time.
Goals are set for this week and with cooperation from the weather...I'll achieve them. *grin*

Have a wonderful day, being alive is a blessing.

Hugs,
Wanda

Yes - Happy Monday Wanda. It's really warm today here and about to dip down again. The classrooms are hot & muggy - not the best environment for everyone (many with the flu and colds) all trying to get all our work done before the week ends!

I'm enjoying that blessing of life this morning. Thanks for your faithfulness. I'm most grateful for my iPhone to keep me connected as my computer has failed this morning. It will be a bit tougher to get a subbing position until that gets resolved. Plenty to accomplish around here to keep me engaged until then.
Happy Monday to you.
Love,
Nancy

April 10

Sunday, April 10, 2011

Had a great day yesterday. Kaeli phoned and wanted me to come shopping with her to South Common. It was such a lovely day out that walking around South Common was an enjoyable treat. Outdoors and sunshine all rollled into one.

Dinner later that even at the girls. Kaeii's boyfriend was there as well as Quin and Afton came. It is so lovely that our children live so close and want to spend time with us. Kaeli made some great baked potatoes. She sliced them thin and almost all the way through, added slivers of garlic between the slices, sea salt and olive oil and baked them for 40 minutes....yummy! Asparagus done on the grill and salad rounded out my meal and it was so delicious. Steaks rounded out the rest of the meals .

Today will be spent getting some groceries and just enjoying the day.

My Positives:

My children and their "friends". Having our children so close is such a blessing.
More snow has melted and I can now see sections of ground...YAY!
A lovely massage yesterday and time chatting with my massage therapist.
MRI this week and hopefully some answers.
Sunshine and warmer weather. Even the geese that are back and settling into the pond that is not far from us are enjoying the fact that the pond is showing signs of opening up.
Life. How blessed we are.

Have a wonderful Sunday,
Hugs,
Wanda
