Another day of living!

Wednesday, September 22, 2010

Another day of being alive and having the choice to be all that I can be. Now that is a great blessing to start one's day with.

Two more working days until I have a few days off. After yesterday's meetings though, I'm not sure I will be looking forward to going back to work..yikes...it sounds like things will be very crazy by the time I return on the October 4th. I'll need to have all my desk labelled and packed before leaving work tomorrow, as there is a possibility that our department will be making the move over to the new location sooner than we had expected. I will still be staying at the old location though until the end of October, in part, due to my chemical sensitivities and in part due to needing someone at the old location to redirect deliveries and other sundry duties. Which means that by the time I get to go to the new location...I'll still have all my desk and work area to arrange. Should be an interesting time, lol

My positives:

Got the rest of the green tomatoes all chopped up and sitting in the fridge waiting for the additional of all the other veggies. I'm going to try my hand at making some salsa, and then freezing the rest of the mixture for adding to soups and stews. My crockpot will love me this winter!
Nice long chat with my SIL yesterday. I have talked to her for weeks. It was nice to catch up on each others news.
Kaeli phoned for a chat yesterday also.
Got Shavon's birthday present and card mailed...I'm hopefully that she will get in on Friday.
We are supposed to get some sunshine today...YAY!
It's a great day to be alive!
God, who always is there for me, to chat with, to cry with, to just hang out with.

Have a wonderful Wednesday...celebrate the day.

Hugs.

Woo Hoo, weather forecast predicts sun!

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

Woo Hoo the weather forecast is predicting sun for this weekend and some warmer temperatures! Meanwhile we must get through the frost, rain/snow mix and colder tempertures...but there is light at the end of the tunnel! lol

I got 12 pints of Green tomato relish completed yesterday, now I'm trying to decide whether the rest will be made up into salsa or spaghetti sauce...hmmmm.

Had an interesting day at work yesterday, spent hours making "marshmellow men". Huh!
As part of the support committee for our move, our responsibility is to offer support to our co-workers as we go through this transition. Marshmellows are part of our work environment. They have been used as a way of acknowledging and supporting each other . It started at one of our Professional Dev. Days. We had a marshmellow "war". We tossed marshmellows at someone whom we felt had done a great job, needed encouragement etc. Now, people can find marshmellows sitting on their desk randomly, usually you never really know who has left them there...it's just a nice gesture. Yesterday our committee had a work bee to produce enough little marshmellow men that will carry words of encouragment. We've made enough for everyone to get one as well as a few extras for those really 'special' moments. We are working on "whine" jars in several locations...if you are feeling whiny, have a cuss going on...you drop some money in the jar. At the next Professional Dev. Day...the money will be used for a special surprise. We got weekly treat days planned as well as 4 lunch days. Lots of silliness has been planned, which will be spur of the moment events. Hopefully, it will help everyone to release any frustration and feeling of being overwhelmed through this transition to our new location. Should be fun.

My Positives:
Relish is made and looking very nice presently sitting on my counter.
Sunshine is coming this weekend! YAY.
Only three work days left for me this week.
Friends and family, their support and encouragement is what keeps me going.
Veggie stir-fry planned for supper tonight...one of my favorite meals.
Life...how incredibly wonderful it is.

Hope your day is wonderful and that you find all your blessings. Thank you for stopping by.

Hugs,
Wanda

The marshmallow men sound like a nice, simple morale booster with a identifiable history to your co-workers. As an employer I like hearing about ways people creatively acknowledge their staff. It's those little encouragements that can pull people through a tough day.

Hi Wanda. I am glad that you are going to see a little warmth up there in Canada. I'm glad that the tomatoes have been purposed. I am sure they are proud to become a relish. Better that than rot on the vine. I'm a trifle raggedy here. I signed up for 3 days of work yesterday. Today was Jr. High and tomorrow is P.E. in elementary school and Thursday is 5th grade at the same elementary. I am so glad for the work. But I'm a little tired. I will remedy that with an early bedtime this evening. I enjoy your marshmallow tradition. It's a nice one and the men will be lovely. We always made snowmen of marshmallows and you live in snow country. . . it makes sense.
Love you. Have a great evening.
Nancy

Sept 20

Monday, September 20, 2010

Well, the tomatoes got picked green yesterday. I ended up with lots of tomatoes...gives me hope for next year. Lost several due to the frost, but still a lot of tomatoes that were usable. I've got a huge bowl of Green Tomato Relish ready for canning when I get home from work today. Checked out some Salsa recipes using green tomatoes and a mincemeat recipe. I'll be busy this week with canning that's for sure.
We dug up the last of the potatoes too. I'm so thrilled with the potato success. I'm going to expand in that area of planting for sure next year. This weekend, I'll prep the garden for the next spring. I'm going to plant a package of carrot seeds according to fall planting instructions and see how that goes too. The only thing left to pull from the garden are my green onions.
Garry is already groaning over the plans that I have for next spring with the garden. (Bre...you have created a gardening monster, lol)

My positives:
Successful harvest from the garden.
A large batch of relish ready for canning when I get home from work tonight.
No snow.
A short work week.
An awareness of my thoughts as per this weeks challenge.
The gift of life.

Have a great day, beware of your choices.

Hugs,
Wanda

Green tomatoes it is!

Sunday, September 19, 2010

Well today is the day that we will be picking what green tomatoes we have. I'm hopeful that we'll at least get some that are tasty as they ripen off the vine. I watched the long term forcast last night and our temperatures are not getting any warmer over the next 7 days, which brings us almost to the end of September. It's frost every night, so picking tomatoes today is my plan. Oh well, there is always next year. At least I take consulation in the fact that it was not my gardening skills, but the weather that conspired against us. I also am grateful that my tomatoes do not have a tomatoe blight/blyte (?) that many other gardens have. I do consider this year a great success with my garden and I'm excited about doing even more next year. I'm stocking up on canning supplies and I'm going to be ready to fill even more cupboards with canning! lol

We have some people coming late this afternoon to look at our kitchen. Kitchen Essentials asked if we would be willing to be used as a reference. Why not, they did a wonderful job and if it helps them to gain more business, I'm more than willing.

Serenity Sunday and other than bringing in the tomatoes...Garry and I are just going to enjoy the day with relaxing. Hope you are too.

My Positives:
I'm feeling pretty pleased with my garden skills this year. I'm excited about planning next years garden and doing yet more canning.
Spent some time yesterday afternoon with the girls...always a fun time.
Made a Costco run yesterday and now I have a full freezer once again. It was becoming a major challenge to make some meals.
A short work week to look forward to, then some much needed time off.
I'm grateful for having a roof over my head, food on my table and my bills paid.I'm grateful for the blessing that come my way each and every day.
I'm grateful for friends and family.

Have a wonderful day, enjoy living.

Hugs,
Wanda

    Hi Wanda
I am really happy with my garden this year as well.
I have placed a picture on my page.
I only had two Roma tomato plants and I guess I have about 20 lbs of tomatoes off of them.
I have picked a lot of them green as well(they are ripening on the windowsill) and on Wednesday I intend to can them. I think I will make them into Spaghetti sauce without the meat of course.
I also pickled 5 pints of picked beans.
I have so many cherry tomatoes and someone told me just to throw them in freezer bags and freeze them so I am going to do that with overabundance of cherry tomatoes.
My green peppers didn't do quite so well but I will have about 4 green peppers as well. My carrots are still out in the garden and I reseeded two more rows. I am going to try and have carrots until the end of November. I am having so much fun with this. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Just the mention of green tomatoes reminds me of my neighbor Katherine. We would always take our green tomatoes to her. She loved fried green tomatoes. I'd sit at her kitchen table and she'd tell me stories about the "Great Depression" and her mother and my great-grandmother the suffragettes.! She passed 15 years ago and I still miss her company. Thanks for the wonderful memories!

Sounds like you live as far north or further north than I do. Yesterday the high was in the 50s or 60s (I didn't have a thermometer, but am just guessing.) I also like shopping at Costco and filled up with gas yesterday. I went to one of the last garage sales of the year and got a couple of bargains including coffee beans. I bought a half bushel of ripe tomatoes at the farmers market yesterday and am busy cooking some for stewed tomatoes. I used to can but since I don't garden any more that is not worthwhile. I have been using the freezer to keep from wasting fresh fruit lately and put the frozen fruit in my protein drinks (watermelon, bananas, etc)...also freezing seedless grapes and eating them as treats and putting them on top of my breakfast cereal.

Sept 18th and yay no snow yet!

Saturday, September 18, 2010

The snow flakes that started falling yesterday have not stayed on the ground...YAY!

We are so far below normal for this time of year. We should be sitting around +17 and instead we are hitting the minuses at night and barely making it up to 8 during the daytime.

Yesterday on the news, one of the ski hills around here was already starting to manufacture fake snow in preparation for the ski season!! Excuse me...manufacture! isn't it enough that the real stuff is way ahead of schedule???Strange people. lol

I'm thinking that I'm going to be needing to pick all my green tomatoes this weekend. Oh well, the eternal optimist in me says....there is always next year, now that I've figured out how to even grow the silly things! Lol

We received all our packing stuff at work yesterday, including the numbers we need to attach to everything that belongs to us individually. We have to label every part of our desks that come apart, as well as everything that belongs at our desk with the same number. This should be fun, especially on the other end when we try to put everything back together once again. Monday we start putting things we don't need or use right away into boxes. I'm planning on bringing alot of things home and then will take it to the new location myself. Just because I don't want it to disappear somewhere. With this cold weather we have been having, I'm actually more worried about all the plants we have in our department. Will someone remember to water those poor little things if they go over before I get to go over. I just have to trust and believe they will survive.

My postives:
It's the weekend.
One load of laundry already done, two to go.
Kaeli found a deep water aquasize class that is happening in the city at a reasonable hour. She is going to go and check out the facility this Monday and let me know. I am still committed to my study group for 4 more weeks, but as soon as that is done....yay, I hope to get back into aquasizes.
Only a four day work week for me next week. I'm taking some time off to get some personal things accomplished. I'm off from Sept 24 to October 04. Yay.
Thank you Nancy for doing the weekly challenge for me on October 02.
Positive Bloggers...the best team going.
Life...woo hoo...I woke up this morning on the right side of the grass. Now hows that for starting ones day off wonderfully!

Have a great day, it's Silly Saturday...find your humor and let it guide your day.

Hugs,
Wanda

As a rule we don't normally have snow at this time of year either...this seems to be a very strange year weather wise. Almost a non-existant summer, no fall and straight line for winter. Brrrrr... I think the thing I don't like the most about winter...driving on bad roads and having to shovel. I'm like a bear...I'd much prefer to hibernate thru the winter lol

Hugs,Wanda

Bre...
.send me the recipe as well as the seeds please. Thanks for thinking of me.

Good morning, Wanda. Almost good afternoon here. I slept in and enjoyed catching up on some dreaming. The move is finally going to happen! Very exciting. Enjoy your weekend. Stay warm and toasty. And although I am not feeling naturally silly this morning, I understand the need for silly and I will work hard to find it today. It's the strangest thing. On most Saturdays I do not wake up ready to be silly. Hmmmm. Wonder what that is and how I will rectify that. Perhaps some Friday preparations could remedy that. I shall have to work on that. Have fun today.
Love,
Nancy

I have a somewhat interesting recipe for mincemeat made from green tomatoes - using coffee to make it brown ... I spent time adding addtional ingredients to it trying to get rid of the taste of coffee because I made mine quite strong - in retrospect I don't think having the taste was such a bad thing afterall ... I used it in tarts and over ice cream for the holidays!
