August 27th and all is well.

Friday, August 27, 2010

Another Fabulous Friday has descended upon us and the last one for the month of August. It's hard to believe that 2010 is over half way done already!

The big thunderstorm warnings for last night seem to have skirted us, we do however have some big winds blowing out there. The winds started about 7:30 last evening and are still blowing this morning. I should probably check outside to see if we are still in the same location!lol

My cat is sitting here beside this morning as I eat my bowl of cereal. She is being very hopeful that I will leave her a drop of milk when I'm done. Her eyes watch every spoonful I take as if daring me to eat it all without sharing. It's the only time that she will beg, when you she sees you with a bowl in your hands. She is quite amusing, You almost feel guilty eating.

A lovely weekend to look forward to. I've got some canning on my agenda, house cleaning and not much else.

My positives:

Kismet (the cat) who provides so much amusement and love. I say the word love with caution, as she is not a cuddler or one who likes you to touch her without her permission. She has taught me alot though about communication.
A very successful meeting yesterday morning at work. We were able to get assistance in setting up our import portion into our system from our vendor. We should be able to tranfer the information over to setting up with our other vendors now. YAY! work load has just become lighter!
It's Friday, my favorite day of the week.
A good nights sleep last night, no one outside waking me up in the early hours of the morning with shouting. I always have such a difficult time getting back to sleep once I've been woken up. I'm such a light sleeper, I think it is probably a carry over from when my kids were little and the mother's ear was always on duty. Our son was extremely ill for the first 4 years of his life. It's become a habit to wake at the least little sound.
I'm content and happy,

Have a wonderful Friday...keep on moving forward. Thanks for stopping by for a visit.

Hugs,
Wanda

August 26

Thursday, August 26, 2010

We had a glorious day of sunshine yesterday. Supposed to have one more today, then thunderstorms to roll in by this evening and another week of rain ahead...sigggghhh! The blessing of all this rain....we are no longer in a drought in our area, we don't have to worry about fires, our water table is now restored, and I don't need to water my garden...it's watered naturally.

Successful day at the market...picked up some lovely beets for canning and some green beans. My weekend is planned! Now I'll be done until I get some tomatoes.

I have an early morning meeting at work to start my day off and then a basket full of things to do. I'm grateful for a job that keeps me busy.

My positives:

Hearing...I love listening to my wind chimes as they move with the wind.
Sight...to view the beauty that lies around me each day.
Life...the opportunity that is given to me each day to be the best that I can be.
Farmers market for providing me with beautiful fresh veggies that not only can we eat fresh, but I can prepare for winters meals.
Work...to keep me busy and provide a way of meeting our needs.
Friends and Family....who offer me support, comfort, encouragement and love.

Have a wonderful blessed day, enjoy being alive.

Hugs,
Wanda

I like your positives today. Very nicely ordered. I just came for a little inspiration before I go to my other job. (Chief Cook and Bottle Washer) Tim left this morning for his mom's house. His family is having a big reunion and he flew out for the weekend. So I'm without my good helper. One more day to prepare for and then the weekend will provide a little breather.
Hope your day was lovely and your evening is even better. Thanks for the lift!
Love,
Nancy

We have a similar water situation here. Last year they were threatening standing pipes to eke out the water, but this year we have had more than enough of the stuff to restock the reservoirs. We are having a very wet August. :-)
Gotta love farmer's markets. We only have one a month here, but it is well worth a visit.
Hugs,

Yay, it's Farmer's Market day!

Wednesday, August 25, 2010

Since discovering the delights of farmers market on Wednesdays, my week now revolves around all the lovely fresh produce and other other culinary delights that I can pick up there. I especially love this time of year when people are harvesting from their gardens and selling the items that I have as yet not attempted to grow in my own garden.
This year, Garry built me a lovely raised garden in the backyard, next year we will be adding to it. In fact, if time allows (and money) we will begin the construct of the framework this fall. I'm so enjoying getting back into canning and by heading to the farmers market and seeing all the lovely things there in the way of produce, I'm inspired to plant even more things for next year. It's exciting to grow your own fresh veggies and herbs. You don't need a big garden, as I've found that many of the things that I grow only require a container! I love that I can grow my potatoes in containers. How wonderful it is to just up end the pot at the end of the growing season and woo hoo, there are all your potatoes! No digging required! The dirt, I will rotate for next year so that my potatoes have a fresh supply of nutrients that they need to be productive. I'm learning so much as I fumble along.
Our aim is to be more self-sufficient and produce most of our own veggies (without chemicals). It is a work in progress, much like I am. The more I grow in my garden, the more I want to grow.

My positives:

Yay, I got more canning completed. I have all my pickles done, now it's on to other staples.
Posted the requested pictures of my (so far) accomplishments. Maybe it will inspire others, the same way Bre and Marie, inspired me to begin gardening.
It's Farmers Market day.
I had a good sleep last night.
So delighted with my success on my potato container gardening. I had a pot that the plant just died and I thought had probably not produced anything in it. I dumped it over yesterday and surprise! I got 25 nice fist size potatoes out of one container....I'm ecstatic. I'm very hopeful that the other container that I have planted will produce likewise. The nice thing is, I don't have to harvest them until I need them. I'm inspired to plant a couple of different varieties of potatoes now next year. Amazing what a little patch of garden can produce! I'm throwing out a challenge to all the team....plant a small garden in container...even if it's only some potatoes. Amaze yourselves .
I'm so grateful for being inspired to produce some of my own veggies.
A new day, a new opportunity to be all that I can be.
Friends and family.

Have an awesome day, rejoice in the fact that you are alive.

Hugs,
Wanda

I also supplement my gardening with the local farmer's markets and orchards. One of our farmer's markets has been open in the community for over 125 years. Even though it is open year round, this is definitely the best time of the year to go! I like to chat with the vendors and they have introduced me to many heirloom veggies, natural pesticides, and growing techniques.

Thanks for sharing your love of FM and gardening!

A real farmer's market! I wish I could get to one more often. Although there are lots of markets, farmers markets and road-side stalls are less common. However, there are several organic markets in Amsterdam on Saturday at the Nieuwmarkt and the Noordermarkt squares. There's also a new store called Marqt that emphasizes locally grown produce and organically raised meat, with free trade products to fill in the gaps that can't be supplied in this cool northern clime. I am making a point of eating more locally and organically, and choose meat that has been humanely raised. I'm sure that what's good for the soil, animals and fish is better for us. And we need to support our locale farmers. I only have a balcony, so I think potatoes may be too ambitious. But I am enjoying cherry tomatoes from my single plant! Enjoy the produce of our good earth!

The Canning (so far!)

Tuesday, August 24, 2010

These pictures are for those of you who requested a look see at what I've been doing lately! lol

Okay Nancy, now I want to see that desk!lol

I love my new canning book...it includes the nutritional information about each recipe. YAY!

The whole works to date. More yet to come.

Pickled onions/red peppers; no dill pickles; pickled carrots

no garlic bread and butter pickles; no garlic pickles, dill and garlic pickles

garlic bread and butter pickles; yet more pickles and yet more pickles

pickled asparagus (thought I'd try) and mixed garlic sweet pickles

Now if we ever get some sunshine...I will hopefully have some tomatoes to can.
I dug up one of my potato plants today...woo hoo...it was a container planted one and I got 25 lovely fist size potatoes out of it!
What a great feeling to know that I am providing some very healthy home grown veggies for my family.

Hugs,
Wanda

Whoa! That's a lot of pickles! Garlic bread and butter pickles for me please. I have finally managed to find a source (the local fish shop!)--B&B pickles are just not found on supermarket shelves here and they are my favourites, although little gherkins are good too.

It all looks wonderful, Wanda. And a lot of work. It's a good thing you enjoy it.

Beautiful! It's just like being in a jewelry store. What precious gems. I am so proud of all of your hard work. Thanks for treating me to the visual feast! If I had a camera, I'd take a picture of my desk. It is clean, but two other tables are now under a foot of "stuff". I'm continuing to pick and sort. I took a 1/2 day job tomorrow just to get away from the desk job! It's getting there. I'll be so glad when it's sorted. Thanks for giving me a nice break from my work. Have a great evening. (I hope I can find a pickle in my house. I'm hungry!)
Love,
Nancy

Another day and another dollar...

Tuesday, August 24, 2010

an opportunity to make an inroad into the life that I desire. I love how each morning as I wake up, I have the realization that this is my day, my gift, to be as creative as I want. That how the day turns out is mostly up to my choices. Life on my terms. Doesn't that just idea just fill you with a sense of empowerment!

Study group on Monday evenings has settled into a routine now and we have the same people coming each week. It's nice, as you develop a unity with these people, you are all of like mind.

I didn't get my canning done yesterday as planned, but that's okay. I'll complete that task today after work. Nancy...I will try to take a picture of all my canning for you...just to inspire you! lol

My positives:

Learning and growing.
Being part of a new temporary committee at work. A support committee for the duration of our move to our new facility. Wow, hard to believe that something that has been in the planning for the past few years is now on our doorstep. We get the keys to our new library on September 17 and begin our move October 1.
Being part of a new and exciting change at work.
We are "supposed" to get sunshine today...woo hoo! It's been days since we have seen the sun...perhaps the temperature will actually be warm too! Nope, I'm not complaining, just being hopeful! Okay, yes, there was some complaining in that!
Life, how incredible it really is.

Thanks for stopping by for a visit, make the most of your day, be happy.

Hugs,
Wanda

Hi Wanda, share the canning picture with us all please! I can't remember the last time I canned. No one seems to do it here and they certainly don't carry canning supplies in the supermarket. Maybe it's related to the small houses, many apartments and minimal storage available. But it is so satisfying to see those pretty jars of many colors stack up on pantry shelves, isn't it? Wishing you lots of warmth and sunshine. (Even positive bloggers are allowed to gripe!)

Good Morning Wanda. I must agree it is a great day to be alive! I felt very connected with you this morning. I was trying to figure out what to write for my huddle this morning and I said "Another day, another sparkpoint." I hadn't seen your blog title yet. So when I went in to check the blogs I had missed, I enjoyed that connection to my soul sister. I think we visited the same spirit plane this morning. Yes I want to see those cans! I'll take a picture of my clean desk as well (whenever that happens!)
Love you . Have an awesome day!

Wanda, it is SO true! The paths of life are before us and we can choose which we will follow...The same concept my counselor and I explored yesterday! Thank you for your reinforcement...even if you were unaware you were doing so!

Have a beautiful day!! My co-workers are moving in one at a time...Three are now here...two to come! I can't wait until we are all together...and really feel a part of this team!

Hugs and blessings for your day!

M

P.S. I am going to use your opening paragraph as the daily inspiration at another team...Hope that's okay!

    Wow!!!

What a great way to begon my Tuesday by reading your blog. In about two hours I am going to teach a half day seminar on communications to a group of managers and their labor leaders. You gave me a very positive platform to leap off on.

I wish we had the climate to can vegggies and stuff but this year with the temp being as it was, that effort would have been futile.

Have a blessed day and thank you for the inspiration

Absolutely!!! I love that you are so positive and focus on 'choice' as opposed to 'just how it is'. Kudos to you :)
