Mental Health First Aid

Tuesday, March 18, 2008

Mental Health First Aid...interesting course. I have two more classes to complete it. What an interesting eye-0pener. So much stigmatism is still attached to people having mental health problems. Scary statistics and even they aren't accurate...1 out of every 3 people will have a mental health problem at some point in their life. Those are only the ones that are reported!

We are learning how to recognize and support people who are depressed, suicidal, bi-polar ,having anxiety issues as well as pychosis. These are problems that affect everyone of us. If a family member, co-worker or friend is dealing with one of these issues it ultimately affects us all in some form.

If you have the opportunity to take one of sessions, I recommend it.

Now for more positives in my day (the course really is a positive!)
1. The sun is shining and the snow is melting and even though it's predicted to snow yet again tonight...hey, it's March, winter is almost done!
2. I have aquasizes to attend tonight, I enjoy the exercise.
3. I was able to put in two extra brisk walks today. Walking to and from my course.
4. I had an email from my SIL that was really encouraging.
5. I woke up this morning! (sorry, just had to throw that one in there, every day that I wake up is a positive and a blessing!)

Count your blessings and focus on the positive.

Woo Hoo! My name was drawn....

Monday, March 17, 2008

What a great day!

I had entered my name in the company Corporate Wellness Spring program...they had so many entries that they were just taking names and then holding a draw...Today I found out that I'm one of the lucky ones! This will be a 10 week program starting April 7th. I had remained the same in my weight this week and knew that it was time to shuffle things up abit....what a great way! I will be assessed by a fitness instructor and go through a raft of endurances type tests to see where I am physically and I will have the opportunity to sample fitness classes and final assessment will be the week of June 3rd.
I am so excited. This is all paid for by the County that I work for...even bigger bonus! I commit to 10 weeks of fitness training (strength and cardio) 4 x a week for at least 30 minutes per session. It will be like doing SP in person with a group of people all wanting to obtain the same goals...Health.

Another great positive for today, is the acceptance of a fellow sparker to continue to blog positives in her day as I will in mine. Positive attracts positive...we plan on pushing any negatives way, way, way into the background by focusing on the positives things in our days.

The sun was shining so wonderfully warm today, snow was melting and spring is almost here. It's supposed to rain tomorrow!

Thank you to everyone for their warm and encouraging remarks about my new picture. It took a deep well of courage to have my picture taken without me standing behind someone or something. I appreciate the support.

Focusing on all the positives!

Saturday, March 15, 2008

Well it snowed again last night...sighhhh!, but on the plus side of that is I was out there burning calories and shoveling snow this morning. Not too cold out so shoveling the snow was actually quite pleasant!
Off to the mall with youngest daughter to do my walking as the sidewalks are too snow covered and icy. We trotted off to the big mall in the city and spent 2 hours walking around and browsing. I burned more calories! Plus found a new outfit for a total of $27.oo! Bargin or what! The bonus...the pants are size 14 and button up and the top a size 16.
I even got up the courage to ask my daughters to take some photos of me! This time I am not hiding behind something or someone! Still not comfortable with my image, but I'm working on it. So gone is my little red car avatar and I've replaced it with an up to date photo of me!

Hope you have all focused on your positives today and pushed those negatives into the background!

Have a wonderful evening.

Making my own challenge

Friday, March 14, 2008

Although our challenge is complete for this week and no new challenges are being issued for a couple of weeks due to people being away on holidays, I decided that I would keep blogging a positive each day.
Perhaps through focusing on the positives and allowing others to read them, they too will be encouraged and motivated to focus on the positives in their lives.

Some of todays positives:
1) a great day at work, had our department monthly meeting and discussed our new library that is now in the ground breaking stages, that's always exciting!
2) had a co-worker comment to me on how she has noticed how "slender" I am becoming, another opportunity to share SparkPeople!
3) I didn't have to make supper tonight as my girls are out and about and my husband is working late....more time to read my book!
4) todays Friday, which means a lovely weekend to face!
5) laundry is almost finished, a day off tomorrow!

I encourage all that read this blog to examine their own day and blog about the positives each day. It is such an uplifting experience not only for yourselves but for others to read and be encouraged.

Have a wonderful spirit filled evening. Hug the one your with.

Day 7 What a great week!

Thursday, March 13, 2008

I have to say that I have really enjoyed this challenge and even though we were only challenged to blog a positive once a day for a week, it is a challenge that each of us should make a part of our daily review. When we embrace all the good in our daily lives, we force the negative to take a back seat.
Today has once again been a delightful day. Not a busy day at work, so I had lots of time to catch up on things that as a rule don't have a high priority in my work schedule. All caught up now and ready to face the approaching weekend knowing that I won't be snowed under with loads of things requiring my attention on Monday.

Went for a lovely long walk after the supper meal today. Burned off those extra calories belonging to the stick of great black licorice I indulged in today!
This evening, I will have time to curl up and finish a book that I have been reading.

It's been a peaceful and wonderful day. My eldest just bounced down the stairs to tell me that she received a 14 out of 15 on a Greek essay that she had completed. Woo Hoo! She heads back to Vancouver at the end of May to complete her last semester at Simon Fraser University. Sure have enjoyed having her at home these past few months. Once she completes her degree, she will be heading overseas to work. The youngest is hoping to join her overseas also. So guess that means I'm going to be doing some traveling!

Have a wonderful evening everyone.

I am so glad that you challenged me on this... I am actually enjoying it. You are right about the negative taking the back seat. There's no room for it with all the positive around us. I was in such a rut that all I could see was the negative lately... Now I feel like I'm starting to become my old self again.

Thanks Friend...
