Hula Fitness - Fun Workout

Thursday, May 23, 2013

I finally got the courage up to make a video of myself dancing the hula. It's just a practice session - I'm not all dressed up in my hula costume or anything, but it was good to practice making a video. Someday I will make a more "professional" looking one - once I learn how to put a movie together lol

This dance is called "Beautiful Kauai" a hula number that I have performed for different local functions (school "culture" or "Hawaii" days, weddings, various parties, etc.).

Enjoy!

I watched your video. Very nice! Plus I like that song. Dancing can really give you an aerobic boost, huh? I'm glad I saw this because it reminds me I have to have my dance memorized by tomorrow or the next day. I'm not even close yet. (p.s. I took those same lessons with makulewahine. Our auntie taught us.) It was a wild trip, but we learned.

Your dancing is very pretty.

Wow. We seem to be on the same plane. Just yesterday, I spent the morning with my "gang" practicing Lei Ho'oheno. We're going to dance for a friend's retirement party. It's been awhile since we all danced together. Good fun. Good exercise. Pretty song.

Easy Empty Nester Workout ;)

Sunday, July 15, 2012

I usually work out to my Beachbody and a few other non Beachbody DVD's, but this summer I've been taking a bit of a break from them and doing outside activities to pump my heart up and get my exercise in. "Workouts" such as mowing my lawn - it takes us about 7 to 8 hours by push mower to complete - gardening and taking walks on our gravel road. One other fun workout is fishing. It doesn't really get my heart racing except when there's a fish on the hook :)

Anyway, I just wanted to tell about a new experience for me. Mister and I have been fishing on his time off from work as a form of chillaxin. I am not totally girlie when it comes to fishing. I can put my own worms on the hook and sometimes even get my own line unsnagged :) But I've never 'done up' my own line after the snag comes out of it and the line is free of fish hook and weights. But I've been watching my husband do it for years now. Well, recently I was having a very disappointing run of unwanted snags and about the 3rd time of having to have my husband do it for me, I decided to 'try' it myself. I got the egg sinker on, the split shot, the swivel and the hook on all by myself. Granted I did the knot a little different than what he did on the swivel, but it worked. I was so proud of myself! But alas, when it was time to reel in, I couldn't. Why? Cos when I had started the whole thing, I had the line on the wrong side of the reel. Duh! I was a bit embarrassed and that burst my happy bubble. But my sweet husband assured me he had done that many times, even after he knew how to do this right :)

So far I haven't made that mistake again. And I even tie the knot the same as Mister. lol

It is huge, Michele...I'm working on a vlog to show different parts of our yard so people can see why it takes so long :)

That's a funny story you releasing the fish your husband was catching (sounds like he had an exciting time!). We love to eat fish so unless they're too small, they don't get thrown back lol

7-8 hrs to mow?! emoticon That must be a HUGE lawn! emoticon

Great job on the fishing line.

I remember a few years ago my husband & I went on a 5 day cruise then spent a few days in South Padre. He decided he wanted to go fishing so we went to this huge area with an outcrop. And he was catching 'em right & left--it was like they were just jumping on his line. I felt so bad seeing them flop around in the bucket(yes, there was water in it)that, when he wasn't looking, I released a few of 'em ("Be free, little fishie--be free emoticon)

Fortuneately, he knew not to take me fishing--so he had a sense of humor about it-while cussing me out emoticon

Wedding Day - July 9

Tuesday, July 26, 2011

I'm getting caught up slowly but surely so I guess I'd like to tell ya'll about the wedding and reception that I've been planning for the last 10 months or so. The planning consumed my last few weeks leading up to it, so I wasn't consistent with my workouts and eating real healthy. (That changed yesterday!)

My oldest daughter and her 8 year old son flew in earlier in the week and the fun began. Of course she wanted to tour some of Iowa - so did her sister that lives here....and the bride joined us too. It was great to have my 3 girls all in the same place at the same time! Then later in the week, Mom arrived with my cousins from TX. She flew there from Maui and drove up with them so they could spend time together. Then she stayed two weeks with me (and my second daughter) here in Iowa.

Anyway, everything went well aside from a few minor issues. (those moments make things memorable to say the least) The ceremony was beautiful...really touching and there were tears shed. Alex chose to have her father and myself walk her down the isle, which was very special. She looked beautiful and our new son looked so handsome. The reception was GREAT. The toasts were wonderful and I got to do my hula called The Hawaiian Wedding Song for them. I was pretty nervous, but I made it thru and afterwards I missed the first dances, etc. cos so many people came up to me to congratulate and compliment on the hula. But I got to see pictures of the dance activities and bouquet and garter tosses. lol

Oh and there was a Photo Booth as the 'favors' that was so so much FUN. We had a DJ throughout the dinner portion of the reception and then a live band that was just AWESOME! If anyone left without having fun....well, it was their own fault. But I don't think that was the case :)

I've been recouping after Mom left last week and slowly catching up to tasks that I put aside for a few weeks. It's been quiet around here. Thank God I have stuff to catch up to keep me busy or I'd be pretty sad right about now. We are officially-empty nesters. The kids are on a two week honeymoon trip and should be back this week sometime. Yesterday I got back into my routine and started a 3 day Shakeology Cleanse to jump start things.

Here are a few pics.... me doing the hula, my Mom and I before going into the Photo Booth and our family (minus one of our sons-in-law who wasn't able to attend and our oldest grandson who was on a sport bootcamp).

It's great to be back!!

What a beautiful wedding!! You did good girl:) It's always nice to be able to share your island culture with people. They always enjoy it. Ahhh, Maui. I was born on the slopes of Haleakala and my first hula lessons were at 2 with the Hawaiian lady who lived across the street. She became my mother's best friend and I took hula from her in Honolulu until I was 14. And that was that. I do miss it though. Been substituting zumba instead. LOL

Have an awesome week and get some rest. Time to figure out what to do with all that time now:)

My Vibrams are so comfy!

Friday, May 13, 2011

I've been wanting to buy these Vibrams for quite a while now. I like being barefoot or in sandals, flip flops and the like (next best to being barefoot) and I think shoes are confining! Growing up in Hawaii had us running around barefoot a lot of the time. Plus my feet are flat so I haven't *always* found really really comfy shoes. I received a gift card to this shoe store for Mother's Day (at my suggestion when asked for ideas for a gift) so yesterday I bought a pair of Vibram KSO TrekSport and used them to work out in today. I did Turbo Fire HIIT 15 and Fire 45 EZ. I knew they were going to feel different as they don't have much support and/or that my feet might hurt becos of the difference in shoes and that it would take a period of adjustment. Well, they feel awesome and was so comfy! I did hurt for part of my workout, but it's nothing that was unbearable and I'm sure it will improve with time. I will see how it goes for the next few workouts - I'm optimistic. So far, A+.

Here are my "ninja" shoes (as my daughter calls them!).

Hi. I'm back, kinda. I, too, have vibrams - Makulewahine's grandkids call them my "frog feet." (They are green and white.) I've had them for about a year. No break-in period. They fit my luau feet. I love them! If I HAVE to wear something on my feet, it's either slippers or these. I've been told they are also better for your balance. Makes sense to me. I'm a lot more stable barefoot than in shoes.

I was MIA for awhile when I got sick. My doctor said it was bad bronchitis. I felt bad that I stayed in bed for so long, but I noticed the other day that he had written down that I had the TWO MONTH flu. I don 't feel so guilty now.

And all is better now. I'm well and smiling.

p.s. I'm jealous; yours are prettier than mine.

Not the most comfortable blog...

Tuesday, March 08, 2011

So it's been a while since I blogged but I need to do this one so I can hold myself accountable by announcing this to the (SP) world. Tomorrow starts Lent and I am going to give up second helpings. I've been struggling with portion control, specifically at dinner. This has got to stop if I'm going to reach my final goals once and for all. My husband told me that when he met me (almost 31 years ago) that I ate like a bird. Well, I really don't remember that cos I know how much I love to eat - especially my own cooking lol I need to focus! Our daughter is getting married in July and I want to be at goal AND maintenance before then.

So.....let the games begin and the good times roll.....YES!

Hey sorry I'm a little slow getting back here...been really really busy as the time gets nearer for our baby girl's wedding in July. I'm the "wedding planner" so I've been doing most of it while Alex has been focused on her studies. (BriarRose, I have 2 older daughters and stepson; thankx for the compliment!). She's also graduating from college this weekend. My 25th wedding anniversary is June 14 but due to the wedding we will not be going to visit back home (Maui) till later this year or next. (a little less to plan for now but still a lot of activities going on)

Thankx for the support, April and Nina :) I heart my SP friends!!

Shanna, I don't do a food journal, just 'track' my food intake daily in my planner so I can tweak when necessary. It helps a lot. Some day maybe when I have more spare time, I'll get back to my journals. (I hope!)

Donna, I slipped a few times, but for the most part I was able to stick with my 'sacrifice' lol It's now past Lent and I still struggle with it - guess it didn't turn into a full-fledged habit - but second helpings don't occur as often as before!

Thankx Kirk, you're probably right...you know how it is...we are our biggest critic :)

Absolutely you can do it! I have kept a food journal for awhile now, since I've hit a plateau I took a closer look and found several areas I could tweek - I think for me, journalling before I eat may be my best approach - that way when I see it in writing, I have an opportunity to change my mind before the damage is done! Good luck with the last 10 lbs!! -Shanna emoticon

Thankx Sue! I'm gonna do my best! :)

Thanks for your input Roger, :) but for one thing, I don't count calories. I go by "feel", and I know I'm in my calorie range...but it's that second, and sometimes third - yes, I said that out loud - third helping, that puts me outta range. I figured Lent would be a great time - 6 weeks - to get into the habit of stopping at one helping at dinner. They say it takes 3 weeks to form a habit. And since it's a Lenten sacrifice, the idea is to "give up" something, not rotate i.e. pile up on my first plate and skip my second plate. What's the point? That's not sacrificing. So no, my intention is to give up my second plate. The first plate will remain to be my normal size first plate helping. Seconds might not be a struggle for you or others, but it is for me, that's why I I'm doing this this way.

LUCKYCOMET 3/12/2011 9:45PM

As long as you are in your daily intake range, what's the harm. We are all human and I know we have times of weakness. In your mind you'll give up seconds, then you'll pile on your plate, so then what. Stay within your range is the best solution. And if you get off track....get back on again. no harm done. Seconds isn't a struggle.

Then yesterday was Ash Wednesday and I was still cleansing (and fasting) so no problem. All I can do is take it one day at a time...one dinner at a time haha It takes 21 days to form a habit and I'm determined to get a new habit out of this!

I think if portion control isn't going so well for you right now, it'll help you focus on what you're eating, the size of your plate/servings, etc. Sometime we just have to slow down and reflect, but you can do it, dial it in, and figure it out! emoticon
