Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ - Groom, TX

Tuesday, September 06, 2011

19 Stories tall, this metal cross was erected in July 1995. We stopped by recently to view it.

Cross is right off I-40 and you can see it from about 20 miles away. Also on the grounds are the stages of the cross, the Last Supper, and the 3 crosses at Calvery.

There is also a gift shop and a counseling center.

Plano - Arbor Hills Nature Area

Sunday, August 28, 2011

Carol and I went up to Plano to walk on Saturday. The walk was at Arbor Hills Nature Area. Really nice wide hike/bike trail. Had moderate useage, some bikes but mostly joggers. There was a large group from the local dog rescue. The volunteers were exercising the dogs and the dogs had signs on them saying they were up for adoption. I think it is a great way to get people to see these animals that need a forever home.

This a shot of Carol crossing one of the many stone bridges on the trail.

There is a really nice observation tower.

This is the view from the top of the tower.

This rocky area is the prettiest part of the park (in my opinion).

If you'd like to walk there you can find information on this event at:

Caddo Lake State Park Volksmarch 10K

Saturday, August 06, 2011

Carol, Kerwin and Ed walked at Caddo Lake SP with me. The entrance gates are CCC built. There is also a CCC built Pavilian.

The park is not a large one, so some of the 10K distance was made by walking on park roads. The walk started at the parking lot for the Canoe Rentals. I wouldn't mind going back and doing that one day. Paddling a canoe sounds like fun. They water lilies are so thick it looks like you can walk on them.

We had lots of fun on the trails. One had improved stairs and was fairly smooth.

The other two were more natural with protuding roots etc.

All of it was fun. We had 99 percent shade and it wasn't bad. It was 100 degrees exactly when we finished walking at 11:30.

Lampasas instead of Hunt

Saturday, July 30, 2011

We headed out to walk a 10K in Hunt (West of Kerrville) this morning. Got about a third of the way there and had a tire blow out (on the rear, so not that major). It was Carol's turn to drive and she doesn't have a full size spare only a donut. So instead of continuing on to Hunt, we circled back and did the 10K at Lampasas. Having to drive 50-55 mph on the donut wasn't much fun, but since we stayed off I-35 we did okay. Don't envy her having to go tire shopping this afternoon though.

It was actually pretty nice in Lampasas. They had complete cloud cover and a nice breeze. We did this walk back in June, so I didn't take pictures of it this time.

We got back in time to head over to Harbor Freight and buy a new pond pump. Ours quick last week and the fish need the water circulating to keep oxygen levels up. They didn't have one like I had, the new one doesn't pump as many gallons per hour as the old one. I'm hoping it will work okay.

Great alternate plan, Hunt is so beautiful. Glad you were able to enjoy Lampasas. Do you all get up at 5Am to hit these walks or are you by yourselves?
Glad you got the walk in.
Best to Carol at the tire store.

Sounds like you had a great walk! Wasn't it hot even with the cloud cover? We didn't have clouds up here, in DFW area today, it was hot and sunny. Glad the flat wasn't a blow out and that it didn't totally ruin your day! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Enchanted Rock

Saturday, July 23, 2011

We drove down into the Texas Hill Country to walk at Enchanted Rock. The rock is a huge, pink granite exfoliation dome that rises 425 feet above ground and covers 640 acres. It is the second largest batholith (underground rock formation uncovered by erosion) in the United States.

We hiked to the summit and found flowers blooming.

This is me and my DH posing with the "Summit Tral" sign.

When we got back down we decided to hike over to Turkey Peak and climb it too.

If you get to the top of Turkey Peak you can take your picture with Enchanted Rock as your background.

I love Enchanted Rock! I've been there 3 times, but I've never climbed Turkey Peak. We'll have to do that next time :)

In my more than 40 years in Texas, this is one place I always avoided because it entailed heights and climbing. Now I find that I very much would love to go there this fall when it is cooler and FINALLY have the "enchanted" experience! Thanks for sharing all of your wonderful walks with us. They are gifts!
