Fort Hood 10K

Saturday, July 10, 2010

Walk started at the Copeland Soldier Support Center.

It was nice and overcast when we started, so we didn't wear hats. Big Mistake! Sun came out half way thru the walk, got really hot, really quick.

My favorite part of the walk is the fitness trail which goes by the Headquarter Parade Grounds and then has a series of switchback and you pass this statue.

Our walking club won't be renewing this Year Round Event (YRE) due to lack of participation. We were walkers No. 13, 14 and 15 to register. This YRE is in the red.

Joshua Springs 10K

Saturday, June 26, 2010

We went down to a newly opened park between Boerne and Comfort on I-10. The walk was made up of two 5K loops. The first loop went up to the top of the hill to a very nice home.

It was mostly on loose rock and we crossed several low water crossings that were slippery with moss but the water wasn't over 6" deep.

We were nearly to the top when another walker on the way down offered to take our picture. That's me on the left. Note the lake behind us... we will be walking by it later on.

We reached the top, turned around and came back down. We got back to where we started the first loop and headed out on the second loop. It was much flatter, but it was later in the day and getting very hot.

I was the 201st person to register. Not sure how many total walkers they had. It was great seeing everyone out walking.

Salado 10K

Saturday, June 19, 2010

DH, DD and I went down to Salado to walk this morning. It wasn't too hot yet and we had a nice breeze and some cloud cover. Lots of the route like this section of country road had shade.

The walk started out by visiting Sirena in Salado Creek. Legend had it that an Indian Maiden made a wish for this brave she loved to marry her. A catfish overheard her make her wish and granted it, if she would come swim with him as a mermaid during each full moon. But he warned her that if she was ever seen as a Mermaid, she could never turn back into human form. Naturally, she was seen and must remain a mermaid forever.

The walk ended by going by the ruins of Salado College. The College openned its doors on February 20, 1860 in a temporary wooden building, and there Rev. Levi Tenney served as Principal for the primary school. On July 4, 1860, the cornerstone for the college building was laid.

How long does your 10K take? It looks like a lovely walk. Thanks for the tour of someplace I'd likely never visit.

Fredericksburg, TX

Sunday, June 13, 2010

Saturday we went down to Fredericksburg to walk a 10K volksmarch that started at the Tin Star Ranch. We had overcast skies to start, but clouds soon broke up and it got hot. We passed this young man and his grandmother. He was enjoying the stream. His grandmother told us that he is 5 years old and that this was his first Volksmarch. I think it is great that his grandmother is getting him interested in walking at such a young age. An yes, he walked a 10K (6 miles)!
