DH, DD and I went down to Salado to walk this morning. It wasn't too hot yet and we had a nice breeze and some cloud cover. Lots of the route like this section of country road had shade.
The walk started out by visiting Sirena in Salado Creek. Legend had it that an Indian Maiden made a wish for this brave she loved to marry her. A catfish overheard her make her wish and granted it, if she would come swim with him as a mermaid during each full moon. But he warned her that if she was ever seen as a Mermaid, she could never turn back into human form. Naturally, she was seen and must remain a mermaid forever.
The walk ended by going by the ruins of Salado College. The College openned its doors on February 20, 1860 in a temporary wooden building, and there Rev. Levi Tenney served as Principal for the primary school. On July 4, 1860, the cornerstone for the college building was laid.
