Running a marathon for Compassion

Wednesday, August 14, 2013

After completing my goal of running a half marathon, I experienced the need to add another challenge. Having hit goal weight and subsequently maintaining my weight, I find that having non-weight goals are key to staying motivated. So, what was the next obvious goal......MARATHON! emoticon I didn't want this to be just any marathon experience. I wanted it to mean more. So, I looked up different charities that I could raise money for during my training. I came across Team Compassion. Team Compassion participants pick their own events and raise funds for the Medical Fund arm of Compassion International. emoticon
So, I thought that I would share my fundraising as well as training experiences with you all. emoticon . I will keep you posted! emoticon

Emotional eating ...Then versus now

Tuesday, February 19, 2013

I am an emotional eater at times...Always have been.. Before Spark People, my emotional eating would be in the form of cookies, chips, etc. Basically, the typical comfort foods....On my quest to health, I started consuming LOTS of veggies, fruit, seeds, nuts, beans, etc.... These foods provide me with soooooo many good nutrients, that I rarely crave the other foods... So, now, when I am upset... I tend to turn to healthy goodies like stuffed grape leaves or homemade Lara bars. I will consume more of these than normal, but not enough to cause me to binge. emoticon

One of my favorite healthy foods when I want to binge are frozen dark cherries. Yum!

I've found this is the answer for me as well. Always have plenty of nutritious food in stock and although I might overeat at least it's not as bad as it might have been. My husband had a stroke a couple of weeks ago, ambulances, hospitals, we had visitors, plumber and electrician = stress in a big way. And I overate, of course, but only fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

Approaching Valentine's Day!

Thursday, January 31, 2013

emoticon As we approach the holiday of love, chocolates, and romance... I am thinking about Hearts.... No, not the kind in a card or covering a box of chocolates...but the organ that sustains our lives. This marvel that pumps blood and enables us to experience all of the wonderful things that this life provides. I ask myself how often do I give thanks for this wonderful work of God. Am I even realizing that it is a gift that it continues to beat each day? emoticon On further reflection...How do I treat this wonderful mechanism...Do I nourish it with nutrient dense food to provide it with all it needs to pump healthfully? Or, do I consume artery clogging goodies that make it weak? Do I give it a workout so that it can be strong and fit? Or, do I sit around all day getting it enlarged and lazy? emoticon
This February, I pledge to my heart...to feed it well and get it fresh air and exercise.... emoticon What about you?????? emoticon emoticon emoticon

I read recently that your dental health is directly linked to your heart health. They say that the more you floss and brush, the better your heart is.

How interesting, ehe?

    Great blog!

I've gone back to using a heart rate monitor to judge how hard I need to be exercising as I recover from being sick. It's a great way to know just how much I can manage.

Thanks for the reminder about Valentine's Day coming....time to order something for my sweetie!

Blog that was brought about by a commercial with Ben Affleck.

Sunday, January 27, 2013

I was just innocently watching a Monk marathon on tv, when a commercial came on with the ever so handsome, Ben Affleck... It was for the organization End Hunger... Now, I had no plan on writing a blog today....I was just going to rest this evening, enjoying the detective with OCD....Simple pleasures. emoticon Yet, this commercial got me to thinking and that thinking got me to writing this blog. emoticon
I just want to say that I am so thankful that I have the money that I need for all of the healthy fruits and veggies to keep me healthy....I am thankful for the overabundance of clean water that I have to keep my body working effectively. I am thankful that I have the blessing of having too much food to eat.... I am thankful for my needs being met so that I have the time and energy to exercise for the pleasure of it!!!!! I feel truly BLESSED!!!!!! Sometimes a change in attitude is all that is needed! emoticon

I was doing a mindful eating challenge and I think that if we are grateful for our food as we eat it, that is really the thing.

Also, love Monk. People used to always ask me if I'd seen it because I remind them of him or something, and after I had my baby I finally saw one and watched all 8 seasons in about a month!

So true! Those of us who share these blessings need to take a few moments now and then to recognize that we should not take such things for granted. Thanks for the reminder.

p.s. I do love a good Monk marathon!

Grandma had less to be thankful for than I do, yet she was grateful every day. She always told me to count my blessings (which sounded so trite to my ungrateful ears). Yet, as with most of the things I remember from Grandma, she was right. Gratitude is Prayer 101.
