Cruel Kindness

Monday, November 07, 2011

2 blogs in one day, what's going on?!

I FINALLY got around to doing the myomytv workout Cruel Kindness tonight. Youch. I'm glad i got that over with. Cruel is definitely a word i would associate with this workout!

I'm glad that when i first looked at it, i saw i'd be doing 4 sets of 5 exercises. I was knackered to begin with, and thought "I could always cut it on the 3rd round to 15 mins".... Even happier now that i DIDN'T and decided to push on. That's what we're here for?! So this is what it looked like -

Alt. rev lunge - 16-15-15-14 (was supposed to be high deficit but i don't have a step, and the lunges with the kettlebell are torture enough)
Elevated super plank climbers - 6-5-6-5 (Surprised myself actually doing them elevated using the couch)
2 hand KB swing - 28-23-24-19 (These tire me SO bad. Anyone else who used KBs find these ridiculously challenging? I'm thinking it's just me. :-/ )
Renegade rows (alt rows)- 18-20-17-21
KB vertical swing burpee- 6-6-6-7

Whew. Workout and a half. My wrists are feeling it from those elevated climbers... i've noticed i do tend to start feeling it when i'm putting weight on my wrists. To me, it means i need to do it more often.

I did a pull up or two (from standing) before my workout. Oh and a chin up, which was mostly from hanging. I haven't quite got "the one" yet though. I did some more afterwards. I suppose i'd be better following the proper program... It's just frustrating.

Let's see how i feel tomorrow after that, hah.

This is the one that killed me and forced me to rest for 2 days!! My scores were:

Alternating high deficit lunge: 15, 14, 13, 11
Elevated super plank climber: 9, 10, 9, 8
2 handed swing: 29, 29, 28, 30
Alterating plyo rows: 30, 33, 29, 25
Vertical swing burpee: 8, 7, 7, 7

The 2 handed swings kill me too. When I was doing them with 6kg, fine, no problem; but with 12kg - it's a real struggle! I'm planning on doing a KB induction session soon to make sure my form is correct though.
Oh - and I just use the bottom stair for the high deficit lunges.

Hope this one wasn't so tough on you !

Ha, you kill me just with those descriptions!!

Do some forearm stretches, they often involve the wrists, which is a HUGE improvement. Also, try using pushup bars for pushups; that way, you can maintain your wrist strength for other exercises. To boot, they allow you a bigger range of motion.

ok, I'm exhausted... time to get some breakfast on!

Dang that sounds like a great workout! I wanna go check it out now =D Marianne's workouts rock!

I wonder if maybe you're doing more of a squatting motion with the KB swings?? When my hubs and I were doing them, he was having an issue with the whole hip bending and then POP thing...

Also I can totally relate to the wrist thing!! Mine get sore really easily too... I started adding wrist circles into my warm up routine to get them warmed up.. it does help a little!! =]

Keep up the awesome work! Those are some great numbers girl!! =D

I'll have to try a few of those workouts. Maybe after this week. This is beat-my-numbers week, so I'm doing only Bodyrocks I've done before.

Holy Crap(insert the bad word instead)

I cant even do a set of any of those LOL.... Good for you!!!!

My wrists hurt after planks and such too.. that is what i think it is too... make sure the weight is more on the palms of your hands and not the fingers.... you can do some damage if you arebearing more weight on the finger ends then the palms...

So Awesome some day I will be like you :) Til then You rock on!!

Update of Events

Monday, November 07, 2011

Ahhh... I feel like the past 2 weeks have just been a mixture of crazy busy madness. I've had things on constantly... and not getting home 'til later, being too late and tired to attempt a workout. It's only temporary though...I should get back to it properly this week. I did manage to chuck one Bodyrock workout in last week though, plus 2 sessions of hot yoga, so i suppose things could be worse!

That course I did for 2 weeks? Then followed with 3 rrreally hard exams?

I had my results last week... a little discreet phonecall... we're not given marks or anything like that, just a simple pass or fail. I got my call earlier than expected and nearly threw up when i realised who was on the phone! Well, of course i said crazy good news, so i was so so HAPPY when the lady on the phone said i PASSED all 3 exams! Eek!!! Oh my GOSH!

I couldn't believe it, and it's still kind of weird right now. I passed the exams for a certificate of professional competence to legally be a transport operator so this is huge for me, working in the family business and now having the knowledge behind me and also the qualification! I told everybody in the main office and didn't realise my Dad was around, he came to hug me and i just cried, LOL! Steph does not cry. :P

So anyways, I celebrated and for the first time in my life i ordered champagne in a restaurant, LOL. It was called for! ;)

Some bad news? I've eaten so much junk... and chocolate and biscuits. I weighed in yesterday and i was 151lbs ! Ohhh dear. Soo... time to be good again.

I am OFF the junk and ONTO the weights. Bring it on Kettlebell!

Friday Night

Friday, October 28, 2011

You have no idea how good it feels to finish work on Friday and go straight to a yoga class. Not a bar, or a club or a pub. A yoga class! *beams*

Well, you probably do have an idea, but I just feel great for going to a nice relaxing yet challenging session, before the Friday night chill.

Today's session was taken by a man! I was really glad to have somebody else, someone different who would take the class differently, although just after starting, i thought about how I'd like to have had the same class as before, to see how i felt and what improvements etc i could notice.

The room seemed to get really hot really fast. Like to the point of too hot. We were doing really long stretches and breathing exercises to begin with, and holding at the end of the stretch. That really got the sweat pouring out.

He then took us into 'flowing' he said. We went through a sequence, what felt PAINFULLY slow, dripping sweat.... and i think everybody was feeling it as there was mega heavy breathing. He was encouraging us all, telling us we could rest once this was over, that it would be worth it. At the end of that part, he opened the door to let some heat out. I was dripping wet and panting for breath. I was also right by the door at the back of the class this time, and the cold seemed to cool me down INSTANTLY... but it felt a little too quickly?

He closed the door again and said we would do the same sequence now, but fast. He said for people to sit it out who were really feeling it - and the friend i with had a sit down and drank some water. I decided to at least give it a shot, and to be honest, going through the sequence faster was such a relief to going slow, it was much easier and i felt good about it.

Before i knew it - the class was over! We did some meditation to finish and then he left us to either get up and go or lie back for a little longer. :)

I can say that my second hot yoga class felt so much harder than the first. It's hard to compare to the first though because it was very different. I didn't feel as flexible. I couldn't breath very well, i was hotter than last time. And BAM - it was over before i even though we had half an hour gone! The first class felt like 2 hours, LOL!!!!

Chilling out now for the night. Having some Chinese food. :-/ I have come to the... plans that I will work out hard, and sort of eat right most of the time, and anyway when I'm working out hard, i want to eat right to support that, so the domino effect should take place. Myomytv.com workout planned for tomorrow - Cruel Kindness - I'm scared!

Oh and one last thing, am i silly for feeling ridiculously awesome/grown-up/right thinking to myself, whilst walking out of yoga - "My HUSBAND has come to pick me up from YOGA!" heheheehe!! (I'm still getting used to the husband thing too!)

Lmao! Omg we're so similar, I would totally love to say "Oh yes, just been to yoooga" Haha it just sounds so hilariously grown up, it doesn't feel like I'm cool/sophis' enough for that xD. I would milk it for all it's worth :P.

I'm struggling with my eating too.. We seem similar in that too. It's like, I love exercising, well by that I mean I can deal with it most of the time.. But eating? Right now? It seems like the toughest thing in the world (which is silly considering it's the matter of eating hobnobs and cupcakes compared to physically sweating your balls off haha). Hope we both get it sorted sooon (or find a happy balance at least.)

(Mostly) Clean it Up!

Wednesday, October 26, 2011

I need to get to bed soon!

My cold is mostly gone, I don't think i've mentioned but my voice has been hardly there since last week, i was feeling much better from stuffy nose & mucus ew by yesterday, and today my voice is mostly back, but all day i'm having trouble clearing my throat? A few coughs too. I hope I'm not getting a cough.

Did Sulfababy's "Clean it up" workout tonight. sulfababy.tumblr.com/post/1105058029

Finally! Well... i got tired really fast and honestly starting lacking in the form department, so thought it best to call it quits on the second set out of 3. I was satisfied that I at least got 20 mins in. It was good and tough but interesting too.

It's almost 8pm and i'm thinking of bed shortly. Need some extra sleep. I'm booked in for another Hot Yoga session on Friday night (of all nights) so i can't wait to get back there and see how it goes!

Aaaaaaand what else? Nothing much at the moment!

I'm glad things are clearing up for you on the cold end.
I love hot yoga. My first time in that heated room was cool. All you heard was people breathing. They want it to be hush hush. The only voice you hear is the instructor. And I like it. They only do the hot yoga workouts a few nites a week. And I'm thinking about signing back up for them. They have to have 15 member to sign up, and it cost. Something I can't get by with a freebie... It's 25 dollars per session before you go into that door. I love that you are doing different workouts. You all was keep it moving. And I love how you challenge yourself.

Hot Yoga

Yoga virgin no more over here! *points*

Well wow! What an experience. I'll try and write (type) a bit better than i usually do here, and write about my experience the way I'd like someone to explain if i were interested in trying it. I'm really tired though, so i hope i make sense!

Things were a bit rushed when i got there, I arrived later than i'd hoped for. Staff were really friendly - told me not to worry or be nervous. As soon as you go into the building there is a 'no shoes' policy, so you have to leave your shoes at the door! I liked this. :)

Went upstairs to a changing room to put belongings away, took my over clothes off and the instructor came to get me (and my friend). I wore my shorts, because i know that if i am hot or get too hot, i really need to have shorts on to not overheat. That sound weird? :-/

Entering the Hot Room ! There's a sign on the door saying "Silence please when entering" - it's all so nice and professional! Well, the door opened and there was a room with mirrors lined along the front of the room. The whole of the floor space was covered in mats.... and people laying on their mats stretched out long. We were the last to enter, and had to step over everyone to the ONLY TWO mats left at the FRONT of the class. Scared!

Started right away. Doing some stretches first and breathing. I don't know the names of any of the moves or anything, so i won't try to go into that, lol. :P So after 5 mins, i was starting to sweat and my breathing was heavy. It wasn't a bad or nasty sweating though, it felt kind of, pure? Nobody looked at anybody and everybody focused on what the instructor was saying.

I followed her as best i could, and found after warming up that my stretches were deeper, i usually have a good stretch after a workout, and i am aware of my improvement in that department, so it was nice to see these stretches seem to just come to me without pushing too hard. Also the balance... i did ok on the balance and was quite surprised! There is LOTS of room for improvement though. The breathing is interesting and i think i'll get into that more after more classes. I found myself at times really out of breath, holding the current pose and being shaky, thinking i better just lie down and get my breath or i'm gonna fall... but held on as much as i could through most of them.

Sweat in my eyes, dripping down the arms, legs. Oh it was wet!

The session finished lying flat on the mat stretched out. I started getting into the breathing a bit more at that time. Coming out of the hot room were orange segments to eat and ice cold towels for refreshment! How nice is that? I was well impressed. My whole body was glowing, for like an hour afterwards too.

This was really interesting for me to try and it's VERY different from anything i've ever done (football, rugby?) but it was a nice change! I did enjoy it and it was a challenge, I'm looking forward to my next session. I don't know if after a few sessions, if doing the same moves all the time it might get boring to me, but for now i'll just say that i'm excited and i'll wait and see!

Nice healthy dinner of fish with asparagus and cauliflower - and omgosh, i haven't tasted cauliflower SO good in such a long time! I'm not big on cauliflower but my mouth is watering NOW thinking of how tasty it was when i ate it only an hour ago, lol!

Rightio! Workout tomorrow when i get home - can't wait already!

I have been doing Bikram Yoga since July and I love it! The first couple months were difficult for me but it's become much better for me. There are a few poses that I dread doing but other than that I think it's one of my favorite workouts. It seems that I am getting more results from this than anything I've tried before.

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

HEYBUTT 10/26/2011 10:06AM

What a great experience. It depends on the instructor and type of class if the moves will be repeated. But even if you're doing the same move there's usually a way to make it more challenging, so perhaps you won't get bored. And yoga is all about doing what's right for your body at that particular time. So even if the move is the same, your body might be tired/energetic so it will feel different or be more/less challenging.

The breathing will come with time, too. That was one of the hardest things for me at first, too. And once you get the hang of it, you can carry it over to other exercises. It's helped me learn to control my breathing when I run.

Sounds like you've found a great class right off the bat! emoticon What a neat experience. And everything's so well organized and professional.

They should have explained the breathing technique to you at the start of the class. Once you figure it out, you can "breathe into" poses, which lets you stretch even more deeply. A good way to rest, if you need to, is in Child's Pose, where you sit on your heels and rest your upper body on the mat.

If you're afraid you'll get bored with the class somewhere down the road, talk to your instructor. She should be able to tell you how these classes normally progress. I suppose it also depends on if this is an ongoing class to which you've booked a random interval of sessions, or if all your sessions belong to one class. Hm... what I mean is, when I did Pilates, I paid for 12 sessions, but the actual course goes on all year round. I just happened to participate in 12 sessions out of that. Still ended up providing enough challenge and variation to not make it boring.

Is this a once a week deal? It'll be nice to hear how things go for you. And I wouldn't be surprised one bit if you end up inspiring more people to give it a try!
