Where has the time gone?

Wednesday, March 18, 2009

I joined SP last year August and was at an all time high of 231 lbs! I could not believe that when I got on the scale and it hurt to see the number. I knew that I had gained weight but certainly didn't see myself being that size. And then I stumbled across SP - WOW a free site that offers so many tools to help me lose weight, along with tons of support by the members who are trying to do the same thing - Change Their Lives and Lose Weight!

After almost a year, my weight has ranged from 231 down to 218/219. That's a big step and accomplishment for me but I feel like I could be doing more. I read so many stories on SP and so many are doing well and have really changed their lives. I want to be there too! I know that it takes time and commitment but it just never seems to be enough time in the day.

This year, I am going to make a strong commitment to walk, walk and walk and to ride my stationery back. By the way, it is currently holding clothes. It's time for me to take my life back and make some changes for me. I want to be a healthier, happier me. Also, I have to say goodbye to Pepsi. I don't know if I can do it cold turkey - but I'm willing to try.

So, for my 1-year anniversary I plan to be down at least 10 lbs. That's my short-term goal for now.

Vanetia

    Hi there!

I have a challenge for you:

Track your food every day for two weeks.

Use the first week of tracking to figure out how to tweak things into your ranges. During the second week, try to hit your ranges every day.

Don't worry about the exercise during those two weeks - you can worry about that later.

See what happens! A very small investment for what could be the beginning of a huge payoff!

(Oh, and yeah, sorry - swap the Pepsi for water - after two weeks of drinking water you probably won't even like the taste of the Pepsi anymore!)

Are you game? :)

Ready to throw in the towel

Monday, October 27, 2008

I have become very discouraged over the last couple of weeks. As I'm not seeing the losses that I need to keep me motivated. I look at the successes of my fellow Sparkers and I know that it's possible to lose the weight but I don't know how to get there. My day is so hectic that I have no energy to exercise by the end of the day. I work my butt off at work, rush to pick up my little one, get home cook dinner, try to do some cleaning, spend time with the kids and then plop down to sleep. Where does the time go?? I know that exercising or the lack thereof is part of my problem. But how do I fit it in?? The area in which I work is not an area that I can walk during my lunch hour.

I have cut out fried foods, beefed up my veggies and cut out fast food establishments considerably. Even when I do eat out, I try to stick to the lighter side of the menu and eliminate half of the bread, if not all at McDonalds or BK.

Since starting SP at the end of August 2008, I have lost roughly 7 lbs. Yes, it's a loss but I am a little over 2 months into this and wanted to see more. What else can I do? I hear that I should drink water then I hear that I should not drink all that water b/c it will increase my belly weight. I DON'T NEED ANYMORE BELLY WEIGHT!! Should I try some type of weight loss pill or supplement to help me?? I want to lose weight so badly but I don't know what else to do. This always seem to be my pattern, I start out strong, enthusied and motivated to lose weight but once I get into it...the thrill subsides.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as I really want to tough this out. I have 2 beautiful children that I want to have the energy to play with and be there for. I'm afraid that my family's medical history will start to wreak havoc in my life if I don't change now!

Lost & Confused - need help on this journey!

I know I am a little late leaving you a comment on this but just like you my days seem to get shorter and shorter and the list of things I need to get done longer and longer. First off - I am super frustrated as well so I can relate to where you are coming from. I have gone up and down and I am not losing as quickly as I think I should be. The one thing that keeps me going is remembering that every day that I get up and choose to be healthier than I was the day before is a step in the right direction.

As a woman you are wearing many different hats and it is difficult to juggle them at times. I do agree with GR that you have to learn to be selfish - it is a lesson that I am learning (one of the hardest things that I do almost daily is leaving my baby at home so that I can go the gym when I have only been able to see him for 3 or 4 hours) but in the end it makes me a better mom, a better wife, a better employee, and a better woman. Know that somedays you and your health goals won't win because when you have a lot on your plate you are constantly re-prioritizing, but do your best to be 100% in the moment at whatever task you are doing. If you have 15 minutes to move your body - give it your all. If you have 60 minutes to play with your child make it memorable. If you are at work - give your employer your full attention. You may still have a list of moments that requiring perfecting but at least you can say the moments you accomplished that day were perfect.

    7 pounds is FANTASTIC!

Drink the water!

Try to avoid thinking of this as making sacrifices. Make it about postive choices, not deprivation!

You CAN DO IT!!!!

Thank you all so much for your comments and your support. Yes, it is so easy to give in & give up but my ultimate goal is to be a healthier & happier Vanetia.

I know that this journey starts with me making some real sacrifices and sticking to it (hard as it may be) but at least I know that I'm not alone.

Thank you!

It sounds like your time is very full. What everyone else has said so far is true. 42lbds in a year is nothing to scoff at. Keep up what you can and it will come. Asking for help might be a very big thing for you right now. Family and friends are what's going to help you get to where you need to be and they will understand and want to help, even if it is 1 or 2 days a week. Do you know any of the other parents where you are picking your kids up at? Maybe you can trade off picking up their kids and taking them home 1 or 2 days a week in exchange for them doing the same for you.

Music gives some great advice in trying to get your workouts done in the morning. It can be a big adjustment, but it can be done.

Whatever you do, don't quit, you aren't just quiting on yourself, you are quiting on your kids too, like GR said the more you get in shape now the longer you'll be around to be with your kids.

Do you use a daily planner/dayrunner/schedule at all? It might be hard, but schedule your day out in 5 minute blocks, you can start at 30 or 15 minute blocks but get down to 5 minutes. You will be surprised at how much time you actually do have when you break it down like that. If you find a free 5 or 10 or 15 minutes in there actually write in time to exercise. If you have it scheduled on paper you will be more likely to do it.

    V. Early on in my weight loss there were many times I could have quit. I'm not going to tell you everything is sunny and happy. It's extremely hard work. There is tons of learning and preparing for weight loss. I noticed one thing on your home page. You're not sharing your food and exercise log. I will tell you that the only thing that keeps me on the straight and narrow is to see my calories in "black & white." If I omit something from my food tracker then the only person I'm cheating is me. It makes no difference to anyone else if I succeed or fail. I can tell you that once you come to terms with everything and your life is on track you can do this. As for taking a weight loss pill; they're all just a gimmick to get your money. Sure your lighter, but only in the pocket. I have struggled many times over the past few years, but when I take a look back I'm a much stronger person now than I ever was. If you need further help or have questions feel free to hit me up on Sparkmail. I really hate to see you give up. You have to do this for yourself; not anyone else can eat & exercise. We're all here for you V!

Hey lets be honest with ourselves, you are down 7 pound total since you gained weight the last two weeks while you were dealing with 2 family members in hospital care, yes maybe even without that you bite off more then is reasonable for your life as it is now, but given that, you have really done amazingly and up till then were a consistent loser week to week.

I don't know who told you about belly weight from water, that is nonsense. Drink water!! yes you weigh a bit more then when dehydrated, but overall its best for you. Just ask Elfdoctors about it.

I only have one real suggestion, be selfish. Don't be afraid to say I need help. If the kids dad (even if you don't like him) or another family member could pick them a couple times during the week and give you some time for exercise, don't be worried to ask for it. Yes you want some time with them now, but sacrificing it be a healthier mom will make that time better and last years longer. It is good for kids to see parents take care of themselves.

Just don't give up, I think your life is worth living healthier. I bet you mom, kids and friends all think so too. Hang in there.

    Hey there,

You are NOT allowed to give up. Think about it, even though you aren't happy with your rate of weight loss, if you keep up losing the amount you have been, it would add up to 42 lbs in a year! That's a lot! It's not a race - trust me I know. One of the worst things you can do is compare yourself to someone else. We all have different challenges we face everyday - it's not fair to compare yourself to someone who may not be raising two kids alone, working fulltime, and doing all that extra STUFF that we have to do.
Think about ways to maybe incorporate exercise before work - before the kids are even awake. That for me is the only time I can guarantee I'll do it. I am a reformed night owl - I swore I'd never be able to get up early to exercise, and now I can't imagine not doing so. Buy some DVD's, or if you can something bigger - exercise bike etc, that you can do at home, anytime.
I've never heard that drinking more water will increase belly weight - and I don't believe it lol. Forget about pills and supplements - they're a waste of money. Track your food, drink water, exercise.
You CAN do this!!!

hey, 7 pounds is 7 pounds i've only been here with sp for 2 weeks now and to me thats' a lot, take it from someone that is not prepared to step back on those scales for at least a month and even then i probably won't be game enough.

if you take some time to read all the info on sp you'll understand better about the water - we're all here for pretty much the same reasons, i've been trying different diets for years now and nothing has really motivated like sp has, i think because you can do things at your own pace instead of rushing in. there is so much info here you just need to slow down a bit, so what if you haven't got time to exercise or you're too tired, i am too but it's really no big deal at least we're still trying to do something about our weight! some people never try ...

emoticon hang in there - i f you ever need someone to talk to just mail me, i log in 4 - 5 nights a week so i'm never too far away - well computerwise anyhow!

Hang in there and DON'T GIVE UP!! You've just hit a bump in the road...we will ALL go through this on our journey. My first suggestion is to step back and take a breather and know that it will be ok. My second is maybe a morning workout routine will work better in your schedule~two bonuses from this are you will have MORE energy for your hectic workday, and the other is that when you want to "plop down" at the end of the day, you can sit there guilt free because YOU KNOW you have your daily workout in already. A morning workout might be tough at first, but if you are determined enough, you will stick with it and begin to enjoy it!

You are so on the right track with your new eating habits. It sounds like all you need is some good workouts and you'll begin to see more progress. You are going to meet your goals, you'll see. Just hang in there and please don't give up! We are here to support you in whatever way we can. Smile! You are doing GREAT!!!

September Goals

Tuesday, September 02, 2008

This is the start of my 2nd week with Spark and I'm loving it! My first full week of Spark I lost 3lbs. That's huge for me and I know that I can and will do better. So, I've decided to set some goals:

1. Drink water - at least 8 -12 per day
2. Exercise at least 3 - 5 per week (huge challenge)
3. Walk 2X per week (30 -45)
4. Drink 1 - 2 sodas per week (eventually down to zero)
5. Lose 10lbs this month!

My biggest problem so far is trying to break away from the foods I have been accustomed to eating (fried foods/fast foods). I need to brown bag it EVERYDAY! This keeps me from going out to the various fast food establishments around my work. They are hard to resist, especially the McDonald's French Fry. Although, I have gone to eating a small fry and sandwich (no bread) instead of the full value meal.

This is doable and I will keep the faith!

MOTTO FOR THE WEEK!
Be blessed this week & stay encouraged...keep telling myself THAT I CAN!

    Those are GREAT goals. :)

A few years ago, I lost so much weight just by cutting soda out of my diet. Did wonders.

Good luck!!!

P.S. Working out leads to delicious sleep... zzzz!

Haven't Yet Arrived...

Friday, August 29, 2008

Ok, today was the first time that I weighed myself since starting SP...I have really been trying hard to stay on track but when you become accustomed to eating certain foods all the time it's not that easy to give them up.

I lost 2 lbs but I feel like I should be doing better...the questions that ran through my mind are: do you really think this is enough? are you putting your all into it? Among others, don't get me wrong I am happy that I lost something but I really don't know if I'm doing enough! It is a struggle and it's hard and it's easy to give up.

So although I haven't quite arrived...I am determined to continue on this journey. I MUST make a change for myself, to be a healthier & happier me.

You can do it.....You can't change your lifestyle over night. It's a progress. If I were you, I would start by making mini goals for yourself each week....like drinking more water on week 1, then not eating "junk" on week 2 and so on until you don't feel it's so hard on you. Best of luck on reaching your goals!
