the deadlift--it is good

The backs of my legs are killing me. my back and butt are sore too. I only learned to do the deadlift a month ago and then did not do it again until yesterday, but man it really works the whole back of my body!

I have done Romanian (straight leg) deadlifts for the better part of a year, but I was scared of doing the regular kind because it looked like it would bang into my knees and bruise me up. The trainer taught me not to unlock my back position until the bar was past my knees, and it really works like a dream. Really tests your static strength on the lower back though!

I've been reading Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes and that has been very interesting. I always thought the science behind the government dietary recommendations was rock solid, but oh my!

I also have been looking into the Weston A Price web site for information about traditional cultures' eating habits and making more allowance for animal fats. I just have to get those pesky refined sugars and starches out of my diet, but that is proving difficult for me.

Eating is going well for the most part. I am cooking a lot of great new recipes with organic free-range meats and organic veggies. but I do allow myself a sugary snack nearly every day which has to decrease or I'll get nowhere with fat loss.

I'm getting lots of sleep.

I'm thinking of switching to cod liver oil from my fish oil capsules so I can get my vitamins A and D naturally and not have to take so many pills.

    The 'science' behind the food guide pyramid is driven by the American Agriculture Association, American Cattleman's Association, and anyone else that wants to contribute. :o) Just my opinion. I've always prefered to have the veggies and fruits at the base of my nutritional plan.

my husband went on a business trip for a few days so I am on my own for meals. I have set myself up for success by precooking a whole chicken and some pork chops encrusted in cilantro/parsley/onion mixture. I also precooked some veggies, and I stocked some cheese, fruits, and nuts so I have no excuses for not eating on plan while he's away. So far so good!

I'm back

Well, I have been away from this blog for awhile. I did finish my challenge and went on to a lovely vacation in San Diego where I had a wonderful time with my husband in the warm sunny weather. I came back and stayed on vacation for a month with my nutrition and exercise. I suffered from a 9 day migraine attack, and I'm finally feeling back to normal 2 weeks later.

The doctors were getting alarmed at my weight gain over the last 2 months so I am now fully back into my low-starch/low-sugar "caveman" way of eating, and I'm cooking at home as much as possible with lots of fresh, organic ingredients. I'm getting myself the very best I can find on my budget.

I am also back to working out, though I'm not on any regular routine right now. I'm just doing what I can when I have enough energy. I discovered crossfit.com but I cannot do all of the workouts, so I just do one a week right now and also some gentle yoga and swimming when I can get myself motivated.

    It is way too easy for me to gain weight with I eat like the masses. Sad sometimes, but true. I'm cooking more and at least looking at my cookbook collection for more ideas. I get into ruts.....and am working my way out. :o)

Going to finish the workouts this week strong with a TT workout. Got my food all packed up for the day. We have a houseguest this weekend so I'm sure we'll be wining and dining, but I'm feeling confident that I'll not go overboard. Wish me luck!

Exercise is going strong this week. I have not missed a workout. yay!

I did a little better on nutrition yesterday. I snacked a lot but kept it healthy.

Today I'm buying lunch in the cafeteria, so I'm treating myself to a big salad, some good protein, and hopefully a nice piece of fruit. :)
