Women's Conference and Kooch

Saturday, April 23, 2011

I've been reading about Kooch passing away. It reminded me of another topic we had at the Women's Conference. The lady - name Diane Cunningham - talked about having an airplane crash and surviving it. She said: "Winds happen.....never hold back love. Treasure each day in life."

I hope that Kooch lived this way - expecting winds, never holding back love, and treasuring each day she had on this earth.

Rest in peace.

    Hi Vista,
I missed something; Who is Kooch?
I am going to a class tomorrow called How the Brain Forms Habits- Why Will Power Is Not Enough. I am hoping it will help me with Spark and my life. My friend, Carole, is a nurse and she has to take it for the CEU's so the focus of the class is for the helping professions. I hope I can put to practice some of what I learn. Because we are both taking it, I am hoping Carole and I can reinforce the ideas with each other.

Body Language/Non-Verbal Communication Speaker

Friday, April 22, 2011

One of the topics at the Women's Conference I attended was Body Language - by Jan Hargrave. She has several books out - the one I want is called "Let Me See Your Body Talk"....looking for it on eBay or used somewhere.

Anyway - she said - communication is: 55% non-verbal
38% voice inflection
7% the actual words spoken

Interesting, huh? Only SEVEN percent is what we say!

She gave this quiz: True or False

1. If a man rubs his chin when you are speaking, he is listening to you.
2. If he jingles change in his pocket - he is concerned about finances.
3. If he gestures with his left hand he tends to lie.
4. If he pulls up his socks he wants to ask you out.
5. If he closes his eyes he is blocking information.

All true.

Hand shakes:

If they hurt - the person doing the hurting is insecure.
If a finger is pointed during the shake, that person wants control.
Firm, hands touching completely - good!

Jan does consultation for jury selection. She gave us this little exercise to do and pointed our some of the things she looks for in a potential juror:

Raise your right hand and take an oath. Pay attention to the position of the hand.

If your hand is open - fingers spread apart - you are probably terrified, therefore will tell the truth.
If your hand is bent forward indicates you will try to lie.
If your hand has 2 fingers touching and 2 apart - you are honest.
If you hand is bent backward you will bend over backward to tell a lie.

Her web page is: http://www.janhargrave.com if you would like to read more about her. I also found her here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5X7fKZTmZa4 - this is a video of her giving part of the speech she gave to us. Would suggest to NOT read the comments on youtube - there is some filthy language in them.

Hope you enjoyed the sharing of this particular topic......and one more thing - she said when you are talking with someone you should have eye contact 80% of the time. www.youtube.com/watch?v=5X7fKZTmZa4

I knew it would be interesting. Just getting around to reading your blogs, Vista.
I think there's some conflict of opinion on eye contact while speaking to a person. Some say that a dishonest person will be very good at keeping his/her eyes on you. Did she say anything about that?
I do have the habit of looking away and one friend goes into an exaggerated way of catching my eyes, i.e., leaning waaaay over in the direction of where I'm looking. I think that's rude, especially since she's known me for years (concentrating on a friend's failings?) Personally, I think it might be a semi- introvert's way of dealing with intimate, close dialogue.
That's it. I have to get out and walk!
Hugs, Sandra

Isn't it amazing that people study and become expert at such things, like reading faces and body language. There was/is? a TV show called "Lie To Me." and they read the involuntary muscles in a person's face as well as their body language. No lying around those folks.

Conference for Women Yesterday

Thursday, April 21, 2011

Had such a good day at the Conference for Women. 8:30 - 4:30.....lots of good speakers and food. Managed to stay on program - fruit for breakfast, a small croissant with chicken salad and spnach salad for lunch. Even passed on the desserts. Treated myself to a new pair of earrings. Will make several blogs on the various subjects in days to come - but for now just the titles of the seminars: stress, time management, body language, what makes women awesome.

A friend of mine gave me the ticket ($60).......and yes, she is AWESOME! This is the 2nd year she has given me a ticket and both years were fantastic.

Hugs to all.........vista emoticon emoticon

    Hi Vista,
I can't believe a year has gone by. When I first met you it was around the time you went to a women's conference. I remembering asking you about it. And I haven't lost a pound since the first few I lost (and regained).
Happy Easter and enjoy your conference. Say one for me.

Vista, not receiving Spark emails has happened to me many times. I have to go to Start and reset everything. Then I have to read the emails from the email page under Start.

Enjoy your conference.
