One of the topics at the Women's Conference I attended was Body Language - by Jan Hargrave. She has several books out - the one I want is called "Let Me See Your Body Talk"....looking for it on eBay or used somewhere.
Anyway - she said - communication is: 55% non-verbal
38% voice inflection
7% the actual words spoken
Interesting, huh? Only SEVEN percent is what we say!
She gave this quiz: True or False
1. If a man rubs his chin when you are speaking, he is listening to you.
2. If he jingles change in his pocket - he is concerned about finances.
3. If he gestures with his left hand he tends to lie.
4. If he pulls up his socks he wants to ask you out.
5. If he closes his eyes he is blocking information.
If they hurt - the person doing the hurting is insecure.
If a finger is pointed during the shake, that person wants control.
Firm, hands touching completely - good!
Jan does consultation for jury selection. She gave us this little exercise to do and pointed our some of the things she looks for in a potential juror:
Raise your right hand and take an oath. Pay attention to the position of the hand.
If your hand is open - fingers spread apart - you are probably terrified, therefore will tell the truth.
If your hand is bent forward indicates you will try to lie.
If your hand has 2 fingers touching and 2 apart - you are honest.
If you hand is bent backward you will bend over backward to tell a lie.
Her web page is: http://www.janhargrave.com if you would like to read more about her. I also found her here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5X7fKZTmZa4 - this is a video of her giving part of the speech she gave to us. Would suggest to NOT read the comments on youtube - there is some filthy language in them.
Hope you enjoyed the sharing of this particular topic......and one more thing - she said when you are talking with someone you should have eye contact 80% of the time. www.youtube.com/watch?v=5X7fKZTmZa4
