Today's SP reflection - Facing your worst fears

Monday, November 28, 2011

Your worst fears are usually the ones that never happen. Unfortunately, they're also the ones that keep you from trusting yourself and your abilities. Doesn't it seem silly to give up in the face of an anxiety that may be no more real than the fairy tale troll that lives under the bridge? If you approach a possible roadblock with hesitation, it might resist and break your resolve. But if you step forward with confidence, you can climb that wall, even one inch at a time, and pull yourself over the top. It's all about confidence, which you build by facing problems. Then you know that you can take on anything that comes along. The unknown monster under the bed is always scarier than the dust bunny reality.

Are you connecting with the world around you?

Reflecting on Today's sp healthy quote
You cannot hope to build a better world without improving individuals.
- Marie Curie, Nobel winning chemist

It's normal to be concerned about the effect you have on the world. You may look for opportunities to help others, but are often unsure where to start. Here's a good strategy: Make it your business to build people and help them improve themselves (and that includes yourself). You can have a much stronger effect on people this way than if you did hundreds of hours of secluded community service. Start by improving yourself and developing the strengths that can set an example for others. Then use your strengths to help others develop their own. You don't even have to wait! What are you already good at? Take that skill and put it to use for the good of your community, or teach it to someone else. For a better world, do less FOR other people, and do more WITH them.

Had a great day walking the length of the xmas parade my daughter was in this afternoon & then playing for 20 minutes wipeout 2 on xbox kinect, which got me real sweaty which got the girls away from the crafts & computer b/c they wanted to play too, talk about setting an example for others. Not really good at it yet but I keep trying ;)

Are you paying attention to your health?

Tuesday, November 22, 2011

He who cures a disease may be the skillfullest, but he that prevents it is the safest physician.

- Thomas Fuller, British clergyman and author

If you want to be around to enjoy your growing family, it's never too late to start taking care of your body. Whether or not "skillfullest" is a word, Thomas knows the value of prevention versus treatment. You have a better chance of survival by using the doctor that keeps you out of the hospital in the first place. Why wait for symptoms to show up before you start paying attention? By then, it may be too late. Remember the major goals and the people that you're living for. Are you really willing to risk missing out because you didn't take precautions? You'd be amazed at how some basic, simple everyday nutrition and fitness choices and actions make a big difference in staying on your feet. Injuries and disease are a steep price to pay when many can easily be avoided.
