Low functioning thyroid means unwanted weight gain

Hi everyone! I'm sorry I've been gone so long.

I recently had a diagnosis of low functioning thyroid so I've started taking liquid iodine daily. I need to make some dietary changes too. For now I'm coming to terms with the 17 pounds I've gained in the last year. Nothing about the way I eat has really changed; I didn't start porking out on pizza, potato chips, and beer, but I have gained 17 lbs and none of my clothes fit. The other day I visited a women's clothing boutique close to where I work and I spent $100 on three summer items to get me through the summer. Normally I only wear second hand clothes, but I wanted to do something nice for myself. As I drop the weight again, I can pass some of the clothes on to my partner and my friend.

So here I sit, ready to battle with the bulge again. I've set some goals including daily affirmations, mindful eating, enough sleep, daily walks.... I'd like to run a 5K in the fall and be able to do 10 pushups without dying. I'm going to get a family YMCA pass and start strength training again. I think the biggest boon to my weight loss goals is mindful eating. I need a lot less food that I think I do.

Last evening I grabbed the dog and we went out for a 60 minute walk together. It was really nice. I want to do that every night after supper. :)

    How about juicing? I find that green juice is such a benefit to my health and goals.

    It's very good to hear from you. Rats about the thyroid problem and rats about the weight gain. Isn't seaweed full of iodine? What a treat it is. You have a great reason to eat loads of delicious sea vegetables.

Your goals sound great. I, too, would like to do 10 pushups without dying. I've been contending with a wrist/thumb injury since last August. It recently got bad again. So much for pushup and pull-up progressions. Alas.

    that's a good plan. i also managed to put back 15 lbs this past spring. i'm also hypothyroid, and was hoping that was the reason but my numbers came back ok this test. so the real reason was food and not enough exercise for me. i bought all new clothes when i hit goal in the last year or so, and many of them don't fit now - or are tight. i'm going to wear them again! i've made goals similar to yours - emoticon

Wow! Where has the time gone?

Today is day 18 and I am down 9 lbs and my partner is down 19 lbs. She tried on all her clothes this morning and most are too big. She looks so great, but now we have to go shopping! Oh darn! LOL! Actually she has lost 14.5 inches off her body in just 16 days. I can only imagine how good she'll look and feel by the end of the summer.

When the 30 day juice fast ends, we're going to keep juicing for August but add in raw snacks and one raw meal. I'm really excited to try out my raw cookbooks.

Well, that is all for now! Here's hoping I'll get down into the 150s when this is said and done. I haven't weighed 155 since 1994.

Days 6, 7 and 8 of 30 day juice fast

Wow! I am still here!

We have been making a variety of juices like:

Colon Cleanser
Mean Green
Morning Glorious
Orange Fennel
Mint Julep
Orange Carrot
Super Green Detox
Pink Juice
Santa Fe Salsa
Pear-fect Pear and many others.

I think that by having a great variety of recipes is key to sticking with it and not getting bored. Most of what we drink fits the 80/20 rule; in fact, many of our juices are VERY green.

My partner has dropped a pant size... so encouraging. Her face is also so thin, having lost all the puffiness in her skin. We took our measurements and weighed in last Sunday, so we'll do the same Monday morning for a comparison. My waist is definitely smaller, but I don't feel much different. I have about 25-30 lbs to lose but my partner has about 80 lbs to lose, so I realize her weight loss will be more pronounced than my own. She is also exercising for two hours a night cutting grass, raking, planting, weeding, etc. I've become super lazy... well not really... I stand and juice for four hours every day, plus I cook for a living. I should walk or swim or something for exercise.

    Hi it sounds as though its all going well for both of you. Both myself and my partner are awaiting the arrival of the juicer we've ordered from amazon... it should be here by Wednesday. We both have about 50lb to loose each, would you mind if I add you as a friend on here, it would be good to have some one who is trying the same diet.

Day 5 of 30 day juice fast

OMG!! Today was so hard!!! I was cooking ten meals for a client and I kept having to taste dressings, dips, etc. for salt, lemon, etc. It was horrible! I felt sick, tired and sweaty all day, spontaneously breaking out in a full sweat several times. I felt my willpower give way, so I gave in and ate some roasted veggies. Then I felt good, full instead of hollow and sick. It's been six hours since I put anything in my stomach, so I think I'll have a juice.

The juices I made yesterday were all really good. Tomorrow we will have:

Mint Medley
Super Green Detox
Mean Green
Clear Complexion Juice

We drink four L juices per day (12 oz) and two S (8oz).
