Get Your Kicks on Route 66, #1 2014 Trip

Tuesday, May 20, 2014

Bon voyage brunch at Patio Cafe last Saturday with yoga sisters, Brooke on the left, teacher extraordinaire Meg on the right

The countdown has begun in earnest now for The Last Hurrah, my final solo road trip in the wonderful 1984 Toyota Dolphin, aka Kurma (Turtle) Avatara. I will take blue highways from Conway to Yukon, OK, where I will jump on Route 66 for the rest of the trip to California. Besides visiting friends along the way, principally Connie in Albuquerque and Sam in Topock, AZ, I plan to visit Sedona and the Grand Canyon.

It's gettin' more and more real now with four days left until "lift off" on Saturday. With my usual strategy I will avoid freeways whenever possible, in favor of the slower, scenic routes. I will rendezvous in San Diego on June 16 with soul sister Diana, who is flying Maui to San Diego, and we will truck up the California Coast Highway 1 together to the exquisite San Francisco Bay Area, with a visit to yoga sister Dawn Summers first on the agenda.

And this is just the BEGINNING! I will fly to Ecuador in latter July or early August for yet another adventure exploring known and unknown territories of the land, the people, and the heart.

Here's a *picture* of life-as-I-see-it these days --

ROUTE 66

If you ever plan to motor west,
Travel my way, take the highway that is best.
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.

It winds from Chicago to L.A.,
More than two thousand miles all the way.
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.

Now you go through Saint Looey
Joplin, Missouri,
And Oklahoma City is mighty pretty.
You see Amarillo,
Gallup, New Mexico,
Flagstaff, Arizona.
Don't forget Winona,
Kingman, Barstow, San Bernandino.

Won't you get hip to this timely tip:
When you make that California trip

As a child, my grandparents lived in a small house on Route 66 and the mystic of that road has never left me. I remember taking a trip with them to California and having, at age 10 to change my first tire! Enjoy your trip and see the highway as it was in the 40s and 50s, before the advent of our superhighways that get us there quickly but don't let us see the small towns, hometown restaurants and tourist courts (motels once upon a time) and meet all the characters that traversed that way! Stay safe and have a wonderful trip!

Listen to things more often than beings.

Wednesday, April 23, 2014

I am deeply comforted by this profound poem. I find it inspiring as I become more intricately involved in the planning for my May 24 departure.
emoticon
(More on The Trip will be forthcoming!)

EARTH SONG

Listen to things more often than beings.
Hear the voice of the fire, hear the voice of the water,
Listen in the wind to the sighing of the bush:
This is the ancestors breathing.
Those who are dead are never gone;
The dead are not down in the earth:
They are in the trembling of the trees,
In the groaning of the woods,
In the water that runs, in the water that sleeps,
They are in the hut, they are in the crowd.
Those who are dead are not ever gone;
They are in the woman's breast, they are in the wailing of a child,
They are in the burning log and in the moaning rock.
They are in the weeping grasses, in the forest and the home.
Listen to things more often than beings.
Hear the voice of fire, hear the voice of water.
Listen in the wind to the sighing of the bush.
This is the ancestors breathing.

We have lost so much. Civilization has its definite drawbacks, although I wouldn't say it's all that way.

I love the Native American way of life, too. Respect, and awe, and gratitude. And the most wonderful thing of all: we are part and parcel of it. It isn't "for" us, nor us "for" it. We are simply a bit of chaff in the wind... and this sustains me.

Thank you for a beautiful reminder!

On the Death of the Beloved -- for a dear friend

Monday, March 17, 2014

On The Death Of The Beloved

Though we need to weep your loss,
You dwell in that safe place in our hearts,
Where no storm or night or pain can reach you.

Your love was like the dawn
Brightening over our lives
Awakening beneath the dark
A further adventure of colour.

The sound of your voice
Found for us
A new music
That brightened everything.

Whatever you enfolded in your gaze
Quickened in the joy of its being;
You placed smiles like flowers
On the altar of the heart.
Your mind always sparkled
With wonder at things.

Though your days here were brief,
Your spirit was live, awake, complete.

We look towards each other no longer
From the old distance of our names;
Now you dwell inside the rhythm of breath,
As close to us as we are to ourselves.

Though we cannot see you with outward eyes,
We know our soul’s gaze is upon your face,
Smiling back at us from within everything
To which we bring our best refinement.

Let us not look for you only in memory,
Where we would grow lonely without you.
You would want us to find you in presence,
Beside us when beauty brightens,
When kindness glows
And music echoes eternal tones.

When orchids brighten the earth,
Darkest winter has turned to spring;
May this dark grief flower with hope
In every heart that loves you.

May you continue to inspire us:

To enter each day with a generous heart.
To serve the call of courage and love
Until we see your beautiful face again
In that land where there is no more separation,
Where all tears will be wiped from our mind,
And where we will never lose you again.

— John O’Donohue

New Year's Eve

Tuesday, December 31, 2013

It's going on 2:00am and I'm still up. And the irony of "What to Remember When Waking," David Whyte's poignant creation, isn't escaping me.

Nor is the allusion to Buddha's reply of "Awake," when asked what he was.

As I ready myself to enter each day of the new year, I hope to always remember that I have been "invited from another and greater night."

WHAT TO REMEMBER WHEN WAKING

In that first hardly noticed moment in which you wake,
coming back to this life from the other
more secret, moveable and frighteningly honest world
where everything began,
there is a small opening into the new day
which closes the moment you begin your plans.

What you can plan is too small for you to live.
What you can live wholeheartedly will make plans enough
for the vitality hidden in your sleep.

To be human is to become visible
while carrying what is hidden as a gift to others.
To remember the other world in this world
is to live in your true inheritance.

You are not a troubled guest on this earth,
you are not an accident amidst other accidents
you were invited from another and greater night
than the one from which you have just emerged.

Now, looking through the slanting light of the morning window
toward the mountain presence of everything that can be
what urgency calls you to your one love?
What shape waits in the seed of you
to grow and spread its branches
against a future sky?

Is it waiting in the fertile sea?
In the trees beyond the house?
In the life you can imagine for yourself?
In the open and lovely white page on the writing desk?

-- David Whyte

CHRISTMAS BELLS
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Christmas 1863

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men (and women)!

And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men (and women)!

Till, ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime,
A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good-will to men (and women)!

Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound
The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men (and women)!

It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
And made forlorn
The households born
Of peace on earth, good-will to men (and women)!

And in despair I bowed my head;
"There is no peace on earth," I said:
"For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men (and women)!"

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead; nor doth he sleep!
The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men (and women)!"
