MAKING IT HAPPEN Week 4 -- 13 days until 2011

Sunday, December 19, 2010

I finished the third week of the challenge yesterday with a 2.8 lbs. loss...now THAT'S encouraging!

Consistent Movement + Conscious Eating = Whee! Optimal Wellness (CE+CM=WOW)

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
Some musings at this point in the challenge --

@ My first ACTION last week challenged me to postpone SparkTime (other than tracking and a morning gratitudes post) until late afternoon, for guilt-free enjoyment! I did relatively well here.

@My second ACTION was to BE HERE NOW and I again did much better.

@ My third ACTION required that I begin using the trackers, particularly the Nutrition Tracker. With consistent tracking last week, my eating was much more conscious and deliberate...what a difference to eat this way!

I'm going to continue with last week's ACTIONS -- reducing excessive SparkTime, being mindful, and tracking! My pal FractylMyth repeatedly inspires me. She said in a recent blog "'Can you do it today?' I had to sit and think about that one... this malaise sure has a strong hold today. Yes. YES. I can do it today. It may be all out of order, but as FlyLady says, don't catch up, just jump in where you are." www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo
urnal_individual.asp?blog_id=3843853

And that's exactly what I too plan to do --
JUMP IN WHERE I AM!

Here again is my end-of-year challenge to build habits that will last. By December 31, 2010 I will~~

~ do daily sadhana (spiritual practice)
~ do regular exercise and strength training and track my exercise
~ eat more consciously and track my food

I am SO glad you are "making it happen".

As a wise woman (you) once said to me, "It feels good to be back in control, huh?" Now I can say it back to you (after I ate chocolate for the first time in 41 days)

Great job on the weight reduction Maha!

Your future does indeed depend on your present - and you have given your present as a gift to yourself. Improving your health is the best love that you can give yourself and you are so very worth it.

Well done on making your plan and making it work.

Yay! YOU CAN DO IT!!! Right here, right now. Make it happen! Another FlyLady tip is that you can do anything for 15 minutes. Set a timer, Do whatever it is you have been avoiding, or is tempting you off the track until the timer goes off and then move onto something else. That works too :D

The holiday season simply wouldn't be complete for me without hearing Jose Feliciano sing "Feliz Navidad" many times over the days!

Love Feliciano...! One of my early guitar heroes! Wonder how recent was this performance...have lost track of Jose. If this is fairly recent, he's looking good!

Know Your Self

Saturday, December 18, 2010

OMG! You know how sometimes something has been so clearly *sent* to you that it fairly bumps you on the head? Well this week's "Weekly Words of Wisdom" that I subscribe to just arrived...and WHAM! I'm rubbin' my head. I hope there is some wisdom here that has meaning for you as well.

Swami Satchidananda is my primary spiritual teacher and this is a weekly commentary of his writings that I receive:

Swami Satchidananda

KNOW YOUR SELF

"Imagine, you say, 'My mind is totally upset today. Yesterday I was all peaceful, happy. Today, I am disturbed.' What is the common thing behind these statements? The common factor is that you know.

"You know that you are disturbed; you know you are not disturbed. The true you is that which knows everything, while the superficial you, is the mind. Although your mind is disturbed in some way today, the knower of your mind is not disturbed. Your mind was happy yesterday, and now, today, your mind is not happy.

"When you say your mind, then who are you? You might say, 'I am my body, my mind, my intelligence, my ego.' Of course you seem to have those things. But, who are you in reality? Find out the answer. That is what you call, 'knowing your Self.'

"God bless you. Om Shanthi, Shanthi, Shanthi."

I'm not a student of these kind of teachings although I enjoy the enlightenment. I get a visual that what we are is whatever we have scooped up and patted into a ball. It soesn't matter the individual items we have gathered. The ball does not make us, we have made the ball and should use it to our benefit.

Enjoy the season!

Interesting - sort of like the manager, hey? Today my obsessive compulsive/crafty mind/body is happy and humming because she is being indulged. The fitness freak mind/body is disgruntled because nothing she has asked for is being done, and the housewife mind/body has given up in despair having looked at the mess that the crafty mind/body is leaving behind her. Meanwhile the mother mind/body is giving only cursory attention to her job and running around putting out fires as a result. Poor manager self... such a difficult job :P

The 12 Days of Christmas, 5

Saturday, December 18, 2010

This one's for you DDOORN! Surely you've seen the Paul Winter Consort live, Don...and at St. John's? I had the joy of seeing them perform at Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, a splendid Gothic structure. I was also on a whale-watching vessel off the coast of Maui, where Paul played with the whales!

For three decades, Paul Winter's Solstice Celebration has joined The Nutcracker and Radio City Christmas as one of New York's favorite holiday traditions. The concerts -- which are broadcast each year on 250 National Public Radio station -- have grown to become a holiday tradition in the Northeast.

Since ancient times, people have felt a calling to come together during the cold and dark December nights around Winter Solstice. In the tradition of these gatherings, the Winter Solstice Celebration is a chance to welcome the return of the sun and the birth of the new year.

The 2010 concerts at St. John's the Divine in NYC (the world's largest Gothic Cathedral) run Dec. 16-18. If you're curious about them: www.solsticeconcert.com The footage of this video is from the 2009 Solstice celebration. The actual winter solstice is happening this year on December 21, accompanied by a full moon and a total lunar eclipse.

I have had the DIVINE pleasure of immersing myself into the Paul Winter Consort's musical FEASTS on a couple of occasions, but would you believe not ONCE have I been to the Winter Solstice shows...! I guess December just gets carried away with itself...! Saw the show in Ithaca, NY once during the Light into Winter series...I think it was a deeply frigid night in Jan or Feb but the show had a Brasilian theme with many special guests from Brasil...outside was frigid but the State Theater was HOT HOT HOT! :-)

The other show I caught was in Oneonta, NY...with the Turkish fellow and the Tree of Life or somesuch gigantic assembly of bells, gongs and EVERYTHING a percussionist could want...!

Paul Winter has been such a wellspring of music...countless young musicians have had the pleasure of incubating with Mr. Winter and carried on his tradition of playing from the heart!

Christmas in San Sebastian (northern Spain)

I just couldn't resist sharing this video -- there's just a little music...and a LOT of joy. It is an up-close-and personal glimpse of Cristina Pato, one of the artists on YoYo Ma's holiday album, Songs of Joy and Peace, who plays Panxolina, a Galician Carol. Cristina plays a type of bagpipe called the *gaita,* a national instrument from her native Galicia, Spain. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galician_gaita

This is SO VERY COOL!!! I had bagpipes at my graduation and they just give me chills (good chills). I don't think the St. Andrews Pipes & Drums (who do the Baker University graduations) have female pipers though!!!!

Thanks! xoxoxo
