I was told stay away, I did and now this

Wednesday, October 27, 2010

Right now I have two pissed contractors in my kitchen. Yesteroday they spent over 9 hours putting down putting down plywood and hardibackerboard for the new floor Only problem is they put down the wrong depth when the tile would go do with the thinset we would be stubbing our toes walking from kitchen, into the hallways, and dining room, Hubby noticed it
after leaving the kitchen with his dinner

So I contacted the owner of the company and now they are ripping up all that board and then later replacing it with the correct size Actually he is ticked because he told them what size to use and they did not use it Money wasted for the company.

it's your house- you hired them- you can monitor them at any time! emoticon
It's their mistake- make them eat the cost- not you. And if they gave you a time line you can still keep them to it- this was their mistake!

That is too bad but sometimes workers aren't too careful about what they are doing. I'm so glad it was their mistake!!!!! It will get finished eventually!!!!

Hon just smile at those workers and kill them with kindness. They can't stay sticked at you for ever. It's best they fix it I know I have been in house with that little bit of 1/4 inch raise in the floor and your right I almost fell when walking in the room it needs to be done right.

Day one....

Monday, October 25, 2010

Today just ended 11 hours and 45 minutes after they started.

The pod showed up at noon. Things started to go into it throughout the day, but none of the boxes which were out in the breezeway and I was told they would go, went. My 600 pound piece of granite from the center island is in my family room resting against a wall. The old center cabinent is still in the kitchen because it was to large to fit through the doors. It just shifts from one end to another. The cabinent under the sick is cut out but they threw away the doors and hardware which means I have to choose new hardward for all the cabinents.

My son went into town to the bagel shop and came home with 13 of the hardest bagels I have had in a while. I ate half of one and the rest of the bag was eaten by the 3 workers before lumch (they got the bagels around 1130, lunch was at 1230)

As of now that is all I have eaten today/ Tried calling hubby to find out what he wants to eat and he is still stuck at work.

Tomorrow they want to start at 7am which is not good for me... asked them to make it 8 am. We shalll see what happens as my spanish is really bad.

day one destruction

Monday, October 25, 2010

It is now 815 am on Monday morning or better known as Day one demolition on my kitchen

Yesterday was busy with doing the laundry to last us for several weeks as well as finish packing up, running errands, etc.

Something told me to get up early with hubby today. Was it the idea that we are presently under a thunderstorm watch (which has just passed) and then a tornado watch until 1 pm. YES. Figured the more little things I got done before the guys got here the better.

As soon as hubby left with the dog at 745, I went to move our son's car behind mine so that he did not get blocked in. While outside, I find the contractors already arriving. We talk and then they figure there is no way they can remove the granite without help from either set of cabinents. So more help is called in. I then ask where is the pod .. answer is " Are you getting one" Yes... that was decided on Thurs.

They talk to their boss and they are told to put everything in my garage. I tell them no way in this world as my garage is already filled with lumber and hubby's bike.

So now, until they can find a pod, the granite from the center island is being laid on the floor in the kitchen against the wall. Thinking.. if it slips, there goes my counter and my wanscotting..

They instead of taking out all the cabinets that were affected by the water, they are only taking out one section to the left of the dishwasher and not the cabinent to the right. Nor are they taking out the othe 4 foot section to the other side of the sink where the water also went.
So now we still could be screwed in the long run unless I speak up as we go. This is why I am not leaving the house. Most likely will have a half assed job.

As I went through my email found one from the General Contractor saying 9 am start on the kitchen and water heater will be worked as need be.

So I can see venting on my part in a few days. I see tears in my future and I see me popping the ativan that my doctor prescriped for stress.

I backed out the room and now here

Have I angered the gods of renovations

Saturday, October 23, 2010

Just as the sunroom continues to get rebuilt, and I think life in the kitchen will soon start, another glitch has been handed to us. The new tile was to be in this morning, Oct 25 but due to problems it will not arrive in the store until Nov 8.. So this now means the contractor will have the kitchen torn up, and the new backerboard down by the end of this end and there no new tile to put down. So work will stop for at least 10 days.

Have I angered the gods out there or something. Why

    I am having a issue with my Hubby today so this may come across as a little harsher than it should;

You did not anger "the gods" because there is only one God. Could you have angered Him? Sure, but He doesn't play that way.

You will get past this. I have really enjoyed reading your blogs so I know to beware when/if I ever do get contractors to do work for me.

You'll be fine. It'll all work out in the end. I'll pray that your kitchen is together for Thanksgiving.

Is it possible to exchange your order for something that's in stock? We had to do that with carpeting when we were getting ready to move. They said they would just put our order in with their regular stock since they were out of it anyway and we got the new selection put in a day later. Worked great.

I know just how frustrating things can be with renovations, specially in the kitchen! I don't know of anyone whose renovations have gone according to plan - there are always delays which holds up one tradesman, who in turn holds up another, and another...

It will pass, will all eventually be done, and when it is it will mean all the more to you for the obstacle you managed to overcome in the process. Do you realize along with death and divorce, renovating a house is right up there in the list of things that cause the most stress in families? It is, believe me, and with very good cause.

The last weekend of calm before hell breaks loose

Saturday, October 23, 2010

Took the car in yesterday and knock on wood, the light which I thought was the battery, actually was the low oil light. Just needed an oil change. YEAH.

Came home and still nothing from the contractor who is doing the kitchen about the questions and comments I have made three times (that I do not need a pack out becuase I packed all my things out due to ants taking over the cabinents, how long are we going to be without hot water, can we use the color paint on the cabinents we have already choosen and purchased earlier in the yea, can we through stuff in the dumpster since it is huge and I want to clean out my garager)... Then even though he put a pod to store my items in the bill, now he wants to know if he needs it or can use our garage to store everything from the kitchen. No way... Have all that lumber for the sun room and also hubby's motorcycle in there.

So down to 48 hours give or take and no emails, phone calls. Beginning to wonder about this....

Today and tomrrow I more the last of the things I held out to use, do as much laundry as I can since the washer and dryer will be moved and then move the coffee pot to the master bedroom so we can at least have coffee in the mornings.

Still trying to figure out the food cooking issues for 16 days. You can only eat out so many times.

Silly as it sounds, do you have a shed or garage you could clear an area out in and use that to cook in - take your electric frypan, slow cooker, microwave, etc.? I had to resort to that for a few weeks. Sure, its not exactly easy to cope with, specially if the weather's cold or wet, but at least you CAN cook some basic meals. Good luck with it all.

When the counters come out there is no place we can safely put a hot plate or a slow cooker. Stuff has been moved all over the place and we can't even get to the outdoor grill becuase of construction on the sunroom. We are guessing the refrigerator is going to be plugged in because we have not been old else wise. Problem would still be getting to it while the floor is torn up.

Gee you do have a problem there, is there any where you can set up a little bench to put up a fry pan or crock pot, or even a mini stove they do come in handy sometimes.

Sadly you should wait to talk to the contractor before doing anything concerning his stuff or stuff involing him.

Eating out or in as the case may be.....I can help with that one. I grew up partly camping (a lot of camping), partly for 3 years as a teen without electric or running water. So......make friends with your crockpot. Stews, soups, baked pototoes, chili. The electric skillet another wonderful no stove item. I use mine on the back deck when (rarely mind you) I do any frying, stir fry, pancakes, eggs, ect... easy clean up too. I also have a hot plate? It has two stove eyes that work just like a stove eye, plug it in and go. I use one eye to keep water on so it is hot for washing dishes, hands, whatever...ready to go for tea. The one thing I never got good at was keeping ice cream without the freezer so it was a real treat and you had to eat it all when you bought it.

Paper goods are great in a time like this to cut down on your washing. We use plastic tubs as a wash sink and a rinse sink, rotate as needed.

So try to think of it as camping indoors and you'll get through this a little easier. You might even make some fun memories.
