Gyms? Bah humbug!!

Friday, May 23, 2008

I posted this on a message board topic today and thought it was actually worth sharing. The poster had asked how to get back into going to the gym because it was sooo hard to find time now that her babies were born and growing.

=--=

One of the ladies at work yesterday passed on an interesting thought she'd heard at a seminar.

Going to the gym is unnatural.

Just like we try to think of our food changes as "a lifestyle" and not "a diet" because diets don't work, neither does going to the gym work for many of us. It's not normal to go and do that, so it's hard to keep it up. That's why so many go for a month or two then slack it off, and why the gyms hook you into year long contracts so they can make money off you those 10 months you don't go any more.

Trying to force yourself to do something unnatural is not going to be easy and is probably going to be frustrating.

So what can you do?

Well, you can avoid the gym. Who needs it? I get 100% of my cardio outside of the gyms!

Take a walk. Ride a bike. Go into the hills. Take up tramping. Do a dance class. Jiggle to the music at home on your own. Do fitness DVDs at home. Join a sports team. Play with children. Take up a community volunteer role like rescue work (one of my hobbies).

There are a hundred and one different ways you can get your cardio work in ways that interest and appeal to YOU. You just have to seek them out and find them.

The key is to just get started. Forget the gym. Get outside and go for a walk. Next time, go further. Now you're on your way!

I love this blog. I would love to be able to go to the gym although I do pretty good at finding things at home. I love the workout tapes that I posted about in my blog today.

Keep up the good work. Oh and I loved the Blog about you being so LIGHT.

I'm so light!

Monday, May 19, 2008

I do rescue training with a volunteer group. Tonight we were checking out some new blankets we had. Someone said "they don't look very strong" so we tried lifting ME in one! I was thinking, as I usually do, "if it holds me, it'll hold anyone else".

They lifted. It held. They were surprised.

One of the newest team members, who's only known me a couple of weeks, said "But she's so light". I was like "OMG, are you kidding?!"

But an older team member pointed out to me that I am. I'm lighter than her. I'm lighter than many of the women on our team, and probably all of the men.

I'm not done thinking of myself as "the fat one" yet, and apparently I'm "so light". :) Heheheheh.

Hey good on you...I like that you have taken time to lose your weight!
Everyone is in such a hurry!!
So now...are you doing maintenance? Or are you still working toward a goal?
I agree that sometimes the 'chat' can get out of hand with misinformation etc. But the camaraderie is always good too.
My sis who is also a S.P. lost 40 lbs with another Spark friend. It is nice to see.
I go to Weight Watchers and have lost 33lbs but am now settling in at a different goal. It has been 10 years since I lost my original weight and so....
Keep up the good work!!

Oh ... like ... WOW!!!

Friday, May 02, 2008

So I was checking my email this morning and found the "new comment on your spark page" thread in my gmail account had HEAPS of entries. Lots of new comments on my page today. I had to think "Wha?.... What happened?"

*Something* had to have happened. Pretty much every day I'll get a comment or three on the page, but not this many!

So I read them. And I found out I've been spotlighted. I'm today's "check this person out" thing on the Sparkpages page.

Wow!! That's so cool!

Thanks heaps to everyone who commented - I will go and make personal responses to all now. You are so inspiring yourselves - giving great comments and encouragement to others. This is such a network and without the networking and co-support, nobody would be achieving anything.

I (heart) Spark!!

You are truly a person to be admired. The fact that you have lost that much weight in the past year means that you have a lot of self control and healthy determination.

I am a (sexy) 63 year old senior (not college either) lol and just wanted to say that I admire you for what you have accomplished and are continuing to accomplish.

My best wishes and prayers for you to continue to your goals.

You don't have to respond to my comment as I am sure you will be receiving a lot of them.

I go back and send greetings to people who haven't been on for awhile and I'm amazed at how many people start and then quit before they ever get going or quit after about 2 weeks. It really makes me sad, because this is all FREE and no one ever talks about money here. You have done great and that is so important to so many of those people who would give up, so know that. You matter!! emoticon

Forget about holidays

Saturday, April 26, 2008

I mean, go, have them! But forget about trying to do your holiday low-cal.

I've just been to Aus for 2 weeks. We ate very badly. Lots of pizza. We had doughnuts for dinner the last night, for crying out loud. Lots of new flavours of old favourite junk foods to try. Very few veg. Virtually no fruit.

I gained about one kilogram over the two weeks (about 2lbs).

One kg?

ONE?!

I should worry over one?

I'm so glad that I decided not to even bother trying to eat healthily.

I enjoyed a great holiday. Had some good food and drink, and had a great time. And I didn't 'destroy my progress' or anything doing it. Heck I've gained more than that in one week in the weeks prior to going!

Must be all that walking around all day, looking at things, sight-seeing. :)

Hi Deb I think you have done the work and deserved the care free holiday. I'm oh-so sorry I wasted part of my year and have to redo 10kgs...what a flipping waste...but never mind can't change the past so i will just have to change now. But I'm thrilled that you have reached such a great weight and look fantastic...can't "weight" till I reach even near my goal.

I think it's funny

Friday, April 11, 2008

I hang out in the tech support forum on Spark a lot. I always get tickled by posts that offer a suggestion or ask if they're going to add a feature ... that's already there! :)

I'm not criticising them - it's a big site and we can't know everything about it. I just think it's funny. I hope that when they're told they can already do that they're over the moon.

Hehehe.
