Forced Strength Training

Started 6 weeks of PT, yesterday, and I'm actually looking forward to it. I've been having a hard time doing any strength training for the past couple months, so this is probably just what I needed. My trainer is great. He really listens to me and has all kinds of great ideas of things for me to try and will change things up as needed. I always look forward to my sessions. Maybe this will be the jump-start I need to get me back into some regular strength training.

Oh, and I hope it helps my shoulder feel better, too. :-P

    I've found that having a trainer is the only thing that keeps me accountable. SP helps, but meeting with someone is definitely my biggest motivator!!

A Quick Update... and RAGNAR!

A quick update? From me? We'll see how well that goes...

I have one more day of GPS work (Friday) before my boss returns, but I may possibly still be picked to finish off the rest of the work. Only time (and my boss) will tell.

I've been super hungry, lately. I just can't seem to stay away from the snacks. It probably has a lot to do with my exercise routine switching up from pure running to all this hiking. Maybe that's a good thing? My wife and I are ready to get started with P90X, hopefully soon after my boss returns and we get our household back to a normal size. I certainly wouldn't mind gaining a few pounds of muscle.

Next week I start a 6 week regimen of physical therapy for my shoulder. I'm hoping this one is the final kicker. I am so done with this whole shoulder thing.

Despite having to skip my Tuesday run due to a thunderstorm, I still managed to run on Wednesday and this morning. This morning's run was a little slower, but mid-way thru I got a call from my wife to let me know our daughter had woken up early and then threw up and if I could please run home a little faster. So, the last part of my run went a little quicker than planned and I skipped my cool down walk as it suddenly became lower priority.

After a trip to the doctor, she seems just fine. No fever, ears, nose, throat seem just fine. This was not the first time this has happened. She spit up quite a lot for most of her first year of life and so it seems that crying and nursing early in the morning seems to upset her stomach for whatever reason. Either that or she has a minor stomach bug? Whatever the cause, she seems to be fine and got the green light from the doc for our weekend camping trip.

Once I find time to write a longer blog I can tell you more about the fact that I am signed up with a team to run the Ragnar Relay Las Vegas!

Tried to get in on that and the Red Rock Relay last year, but they both fell through. This year, tho, I was invited by a team to join them and I am signed up and we're looking good and ready. I can't wait! But for now, I'm trying to figure out when/if I can get some double workouts in to prepare my body a little better for extra running. But, I think I'm already more than ready and I'm getting excited! More later. :)

    So cool about the Ragnar! Tried to get a team together here but we couldn't get it to work out - we wanted too long. Can't wait to hear about it.

    Nice, looking forward to hearing about the LV Ragnar. I don't know if I could have sped up to get back home faster in the middle of a run - I would have to change to a loop course instead!

Busy Bee

Wow, It's been a busy week and a half with another busy week to go before I have some time to breathe!

My boss (and good friend) went out of town on a wildland firefighting detail and and I've been super busy at work covering for him and also busy at home the rest of the time watching his 12 year-old son and our 15 month-old daughter! He dropped his son off early Saturday morning of Labor Day weekend and I haven't had much time to think since then.

This weekend my wife ran a 9.11k race (and did great!) while I watched both the kids in the morning. Then we went to our friend's son's 1st birthday party. Then we went from there to another friend's surprise 30th birthday party. We were gone from 11:45am until 9pm! Sunday was my turn to run in the morning (just a training run, but I did do a virtual 5k and ran it in 24:03, a PR!), then we went over to Nana's house to start getting our camping great ready for next weekend. Then went to Home Depot and got supplies to make a cover for our daughter's sandbox (fake grass!). Before I knew it, the weekend was over!

And last week I was in a bunch of meetings and then out all day on Thursday GPS'ing, then in the office all day Friday fixing up the data from Thursday. Today I was back out GPS'ing some more. I will be out doing more hiking/GPS work at least once, maybe twice (possibly three!) more times this week, plus a couple meetings and time fixing up the GPS data... Then we'll be off to go on a quick camping trip for the weekend. I'm going to need a vacation to rest up!

I'm taking the little time I have right now to type up this blog while my wife puts our daughter to bed. Then it's off to get a glass of water and then to bed before getting up early for a run. Life doesn't stop for anyone or anything! At least I feel productive and all the extra hiking feels great. I'm usually stuck in the office, so I'm enjoying my time in the mountains while it lasts. Soon enough they'll be covered with snow...

It's a Good Hurt

Last night I had problems sleeping. There were three problems, actually. My left calf, my right calf, and my daughter. My daughter is getting her first molars, which my wife and I hope come in sometime real soon so we can ALL sleep a lot better. But, back to my calves.

Why were my calves disturbing my sleep, you ask? Well, I'm glad you asked!

At work I am usually stuck in front of a computer like I am right now... However, occasionally we get the opportunity to go out on the mountain to GPS various things. Yesterday, with my boss being gone, I was able to go out with our trail designer to GPS a new trail system that is being built.

I met him at 10am and we hiked 4 miles of new trail in approximately 3.5 hours. Most of the hike wasn't on actually, trail, however. Over half of it was following flags along planned routes by tromping through the underbrush while trying to find the next set of flags in the mountain foothills at 6,500 ft.

In short, it was a lot of fun!

However, as I said before, this is not something I do very often. I may be in good shape endurance-wise, but I do not climb hills like these very often. I expected to be quite sore when I got home. But, after 2 or 3 hours I was pleasantly surprised that I was still feeling pretty good.

That changed as the night wore on. Around 8pm, I started to feel my calves beginning to tighten up. I stretch them a little bit, but feared that today I was going to be VERY sore when I woke up.

Well, when our daughter woke up screaming at 1:30am, my calves were definitely tight and painful. I couldn't soothe our daughter, so after 10 minutes my wife took over and I went back to bed. I could barely sleep, and when my wife came back in 90 minutes later, I was still half awake and in pain. It was like having two charlie horses.

Fortunately, they are feeling much better this morning.

Saturday, my wife has signed up for a 9.11k run (yay, for her!), so I am switching my lsd to Sunday, so that should give my legs an extra day to rest. Then it's back out on Monday for more hiking. I will need to switch around my running schedule for next week, but I am looking forward to getting in a bunch of extra fitness minutes!

I hope the benefits I get from all this hill work sticks around thru the end of October for my next big adventure... which I will be writing about in my next blog!

The Cold Shoulder

I went to the orthopedist again, today, for a follow-up on my shoulder. The short story is that I am really beginning not to like him.

Since I was only occasionally doing my exercises, he wants me to do some more physical therapy - which I think is a good idea. The cortisone shot helped some, but not enough. I've really been slacking on the exercises he gave me, so some formal PT should definitely be helpful, although also expensive and will take up extra time I just don't really have. (Also, at least I like my physical therapist)

However, he was very blunt in saying that if it I didn't improve with the PT in 5-6 weeks, then he was going to do surgery to shave off the bone spur in my shoulder.

He said it so quickly and matter of factly - and acted like it was no big deal and a foregone conclusion and the end of the discussion (i expected him to then walk out the door without any discussion at all, but at least he didn't do that).

I was like "whoa, whoa, whoa!" I asked if a second cortisone shot would be a better idea before jumping into surgery and he said this was definitely too soon for another one, but maybe when I came back it could be an option.

Well, at least I got him to backtrack that much.

Anyway, I'm really hoping this second round of PT does the trick because I just don't want to have to go back in 6 weeks and have to beg him to try a second shot and not jump right in to surgery. If it came to that, I'd would just suck it up and live with a bum shoulder. After all, nothing is torn or broken. Surgery is just way too drastic, in my opinion, to try and cure some inflammation. I lived with chronic back and leg pain for 3 years, so I can live with this, if I have to.

But, I'd rather not, so I pray this does the trick.

    Yikes! That sounds like a surgery happy Dr.!
You might want to consider trying some Curcumin. It is a natural anti-inflammatory. I take it daily. I read it about it at my massage therapists office and then talked to a friend's sister who is a homeopathic Dr. and she uses it with her pt's all of the time. Long story short - my severe knee arthritis that the Dr's were putting me on copious amts of meds for that weren't working (and I quit taking after a month) - went away after 3 weeks on curcumin. I still take it daily.

emoticonIf it would help to stay on track, you could add your PT Exercises to your "Other Goals" on Spark People. Then you could potentially earn Spark Points by doing your Exercise.
