Here we are, mid-August...where has the summer gone?

I thought I'd post a quick update -- I continue to follow and enjoy the DASH Diet. It's a whole new way of looking at food and it's been so easy! As of this morning, I have lost 34.8 pounds on DASH...39 pounds total. I'm thrilled. :)

Other than that, it's been a quiet summer. The days here in Nova Scotia have flip-flopped between hot and humid and cool and wet. We've been busy, it seems, and are hoping to take a real vacation in the fall.

I hope your summers have been wonderful and as successful as mine!

    Awesome so glad for you!! I was doing great but the proverbial sugar crept back in and then the cravings and now am up 7 lbs. So back to no gluten, no sugar again... supposed to be my lifestyle but did learn some gf breads etc but have to work onmy moderation still!!!

(10 July 2013) Nancy & Charlie Got Married!

June has sure been a happy month for me! On Friday the 28th of June at 7:00pm, I married my love of 15 years. We had a small, intimate civil ceremony right here in our apartment with 14 of our closest friends and family. We had a lovely evening and are happy newlyweds.

June has also been a productive month with my weight loss -- I can happily report that I have now lost 31.2 pounds since starting DASH in mid-March, and my ticker just passed the 35 pound mark. I'm a happy (healthier!) gal. My BP is consistently in the 115/74 range which is, perhaps, a better indicator of the lifestyle changes we've made than the scales.

It hasn't all been pretty. I had an attack of abdominal pain that prompted some tests, and they showed that I have diverticulosis. Very common, of course, but it's been a bit more of a challenge to make sure I avoid anything which would spark another attack.

As well, after visiting a foot specialist, I discovered that I have PTTD in both ankles (posterior tibial tendon dysfunction). I've had very flat feet since birth and I guess it finally caught up to me. We're trying a soft stabilizing brace right now, but my case is advanced and may, at some point, require surgery to repair. So, that's put a damper on my ability to take long walks.

However, it's summer! I hope to have my grandson spend a week with me at some point, and I so look forward to that. And perhaps we'll get to take a delayed weekend "honeymoon" at some would be nice to get away.

(29 May 2013) Another Month of Progress

It's high time I updated with another blog. And I'm pleased to say that my update is an upbeat one.

Last time I posted a blog, I had lost 12.6 pounds -- as of this morning, I have lost 23.6 pounds since Mar 19! I'm still following the DASH plan and will be for life. It's been pretty darned easy and I feel terrific! I'm not sure where this stubborn determination came from, but I don't EVER plan to return to my former bad habits. The payoff is just too amazing to let myself slide backward. As once quoted right here on Spark -- if you're tired of starting over, stop giving up! I think I finally took it to heart.

In other happy news, we've set a firm date for our wedding. We will be having a small civil ceremony right here in our apartment on Friday evening, June 28th. It's a happy, upbeat thing to be planning.

There are many things to look forward to over the coming months, not the least of which is reaching my goal weight! Just keep moving forward!

(18 Apr 13) Still DASHing Toward Success

It's time I checked in with an update, I think. I am now in the third week of Phase 2 on the DASH eating plan and doing very well. In my last blog, I had lost 7.4 lbs and I'm thrilled to say that I'm now minus 12.6 lbs! What I'm happiest about is that it's been EASY.

In 4.5 weeks, I:

* sleep better...fall asleep much faster and *stay* asleep

* have much more energy

* am ready to go down a size in clothing

* have seen my skin tone improve dramatically

* no longer crave (or even have an interest in) sweets or refined foods

* feel empowered, and have a much brighter outlook on life

So, I continue to DASH toward success! I haven't made a single slip since I started this plan. I simply refuse to...and I finally realized that that is just a matter of choice.

I've learned how to combine some simple, everyday foods into interesting dishes...some that have been unexpectedly good. Mrs. Dash, Mr. SF Jello, and Miss Spaghetti Squash have become very good friends!

Here's a simple recipe for Breakfast Cookies -- they don't bake up exactly like the cookies you're used to making. They're heavier, and chewier, but they sure are good with your morning coffee.

1 ripe banana, mashed
1 T. peanut butter
1/4 c. rolled oats

Mix these items together and place on a greased cookie sheet. Bake @ 350 for about 12 - 15 mins, or until lightly browned on the bottom. I get 4 - 2" "cookies". You get to eat them all. I make them the night before when I know I'm going to be rushed in the morning. (You can add a bit of sweetener if you like them a bit sweeter. You can also add 1 T. chopped walnuts for some crunch.)

    Yay !!! you are doing great!!! my dd has a recipe like that cos we are doing gf, and also she loves to cook and try stuff. Funny how if I make some diff thing it rarely works but hers often do LOL
So glad for you, we drove by Windsor today on the way to lunch at hantsport with our friends. they come from alyesford and we come from the city to meet once a month.

(01 Apr 2013) I Ain't No April Fool!

Still DASHing along, loving this plan! I'm on the last day of the two-week Phase 1, have lost 7.4 lbs as of this morning, and look forward to moving on to Phase 2 tomorrow, my "forever" eating plan. Hoping to make it an even 8 lb loss by morning.

These first two weeks have been easy. Seriously. I'm not sure if it's the DASH program alone, or if something has finally clicked after all these years of struggle. I haven't veered from the food plan once in these two weeks, and best yet, I haven't WANTED to.

I've never been hungry; never felt deprived. I've re-discovered how fantastic it feels to be completely in control of what I eat. I've learned that it's 100% okay to say 'no' to well meaning family and friends who try to ply you with "just a taste".

And "planned cheat"? Not for me. To me, it's like planning to fail. I've learned that I can't have "just a taste" or "one small bite" of things that aren't on my plan. That may be a weakness on my part, but I choose to see it as a strength that I can finally walk away from those goodies.

In the past two weeks, I've found new favourite treats...such as putting a glop of Greek yogurt in a dish before pouring sugar-free Jello on top. Yum! I've discovered that spaghetti squash made into almost any dish actually tastes better than pasta spaghetti. New tastes, new habits.

I'm feeling great. I sleep better and have more energy. My BP was "perfect" at the doctor's office last week...his terminology, not mine. :) This low-sodium plan has eliminated puffy fingers and ankles, even at the end of the day.

But more than anything, I feel so empowered at having overcome that ingrained urge to splurge! I go forward toward my ultimate goals with an inner strength I haven't felt for a very long time. And I'm thankful. :-)
