Can This Gringa Learn to Zumba?

Thursday, May 16, 2013

Yes! I put in the step by step DVD today and went all the way to the end. I actually kept up pretty well! Some of the steps were a little challenging for my ankle (recovering from a torn tendon) but I played it smart and modified any twisting and jumping to protect it.

Even though it was just the step by step tutorial, I had fun and it felt good to do something a little different. I am looking forward to doing more. I am pretty famous for my lack of grace, but I think I did relatively well. Who knows? Maybe I'll become more graceful and lithe!

Cool. Good for you going for it and being careful too- I've had to too for my knees. Zumba can be fun for sure. :)

The title of your blog caught my eye, so I had to read on! I didn't know that they had step by step DVD's of Zumba! I've thought about joining a class but was intimidated by learning with others who've been in class for awhile and I'd just be bumping into them and getting in the way of their workout (pretty clumsy here!). A step by step would help with that! Thanks!

Healthy Greens

Tuesday, May 14, 2013

I love, love, love having a garden! There has been so much lettuce this spring and now I'm starting to get tomatoes and green onions. I have been making my lunches ahead of time so I can just grab them and go without being tempted to eat something more "convenient". I usually slice up some turkey or ham for added protein and maybe a hard boiled egg. I feel like I'm doing something very special for my changing body by feeding it wonderful nutrient rich greens straight from my backyard!

Yup, no veggies here either. It's been cold and the temperature went down into the 30's last night. But there is hope, tomorrow should be near 80.

Leaping Out of the Pit of Despair

Friday, May 10, 2013

Several of my good friends and coworkers are retiring from teaching this year. I must say that after 20 years in the classroom, I am jealous. You know the sad song teachers have been singing for years; student and parent apathy, negative press, pressure from the administration, students with fewer skills and more baggage. I'm sure that a great deal of what I'm feeling is also "MayFever", but I let my emotions get the best of me on Tuesday. I turned to food to assuage my negative feelings, and then Tuesday turned into Wednesday. I even started this morning with a not-so-nutritious breakfast of homemade peanut butter cookies. Lots of them.

I went through my day feeling sluggish and tired. I decided it was time to give up on this roller coaster of weight loss and just accept the fact that I am fat and I am going to remain fat. I figured that I should go ahead and order some more 2x blouses from my favorite plus size shop online. After school I put 9 items in my shopping cart and proceeded to whittle that down to my four favorites. Just as I was preparing to click "checkout" I felt inclined to take the dog for a walk. As I was walking I remembered how badly I want to run again. It felt great to get my legs moving and the air was so fresh with the smell of impending rain.

I walked for an hour and returned home with new resolve to get my butt back in gear. I was embarrassed to track my food, but I did it anyway. I chose to cook a healthy dinner and then I enjoyed deleting every item from my plus size shopping cart! I want to be healthier. I want to enjoy running and hiking. I want to have cute blouses and skirts and pants that fit. I can do this for myself and for the ones I love. The best part is, I will do this for myself TODAY! I will not wait until tomorrow to start over (like I typically do).

I start over NOW. I am one day closer to my goal. I am stronger than I used to be!

Your garden is great! I wish I had the creativity to think of something like this for my yard. The hardest part (for now) is finding a way to keep our large, hole-digging dog out of the beds.

Walking and Running

Saturday, May 04, 2013

I have been following the Runner's World beginners program for three weeks now. I have also been strength training to target some weak areas. With the tear in my tendon, I am trying to take it slow and avoid having to have surgery, so I have been on week one of the program for all three weeks. My ankle feels great compared to when I was just sitting around taking it easy. I think the activity is beneficial to the healing process. (At least I hope so!)

I felt so good today on my walk I did a couple of little "jogs". Nothing big, but just a little test. Then I came home and applied ice. I have to say, the stiffness seems to be diminishing! I am so happy!
