Highlights of My Week...

Saturday, May 28, 2011

#1 Highlight: On Monday, during my shift at the Aquarium, I ended up going to the Emergency Room! One minute I was feeling absolutely fine, the next instant I was experiencing incredible and intense pain in my lower abdomen. It was an unrelenting pain and nothing seemed to make it decrease in intensity. Lucky for me, two of my volunteer colleagues are nurses. So, they helped me to understand that it would be best to go to the ER for evaluation. I also called my Doctor's Office and was told the same thing. I was in no shape to drive. I could hardly walk. One of the nurses drove me to the ER and stayed with me through the signing in process.

The ER staff was very good, very efficient. The pain had abated by then. I was weak and kind of out of it. But, the intense pain was gone. After blood tests and urine samples came back OK, the ER Doc talked about why he eliminated some possibilities, diverticulitis and appendicitis. No fever, no pain on pressure. No bladder infection--clear urine. There were some other things eliminated. But, the number one culprit is that I had a kidney stone and it is what caused all the pain. The Doc said that 80% of the time there is blood in the urine from the stone scraping along, but not always. Also, he said that I should be sure to drink lots of water too. He did say that I was lucky that the pain only lasted for a little while. He said sometimes it can take hours or days for a stone to pass.! I never experienced a pain this intense in my life. I am so fortunate that it only lasted about 45 minutes. I hope I never have another episode like this in my life.

#2 Highlight: Check out the picture of me showing off the borrowed chain saw and pick up truck we used removing an out-of-control escallonia bush in our yard. Obviouosly, I recuperated just fine. BTW, it has been at least 30 years since I used a chain saw. It was FUN!!!!

Have a great weekend and week. Enjoy the journey!

My hubby had a stone several years ago, and the hospital kept him overnite drinking lots of water. They were going to operate on him in the morning, but he finally passed his kidney stone late at night. It really scared him. Glad you're feeling better! emoticon

TUDI I had to laugh when I saw your chainsaw. That is what I got for my birthday present last year! It must have been shocking to have such intense pain, good it only lasted 45 minutes. Wow, we will have to continue drinking our water to stay healthy. Have a great week!

Awesome! My DH taught me how to use a chainsaw when we lived in Penn - I helped with collecting firewood!

Sure glad the stone passed!

Hi Tudi...I've been missing in action for a while, but wanted to stop by! That must have been very very scary. I'm so glad you got to the ER and that the episode didn't go on longer. I'm sure 45 min. seemed like days while it was going on. Not knowing what's happening might be the worst of it.

LOVE the chain saw! Very neat job loading and tarping the refuse too! Can't believe you're still wearing a jacket...it's incredibly hot here. Mid 90's. I broke down and wore a sleeveless top the other day.LOL

Take care my friend. Hope you have a wonderful long weekend! emoticon emoticon

emoticon you look great with that saw! sorry that you were sick. everybody says that the renal colic pain is the worst ever. I didn't have one of those but plenty of biliary colic so I kind of know. I hope it won't happen again to you.

Spring 5% Challenge...Day 15

Saturday, May 21, 2011

I've been enjoying getting back into my Wii Walk It Out program. For the most part, I've gotten rainbows every day and have gotten some good island building started for my third build. WooHoo! I've also extended my trail walk with the dogs along the ocean. For the most part, the weather has cooperated.

I hope you're having a fine week. Here's a quote of note I'd like to share with you.

"Don’t get discouraged. If you miss a day at the gym, or even a whole week, don’t get down on yourself—just get back on track when you’re ready and keep your goals in mind." -Jessica Matthews/American Council on Exercise

Spring 5% Day 7...This & That...

Friday, May 13, 2011

As my focus this week, I chose being present & "in the moment" as much as I can each day. Frankly...it doesn't happen all the time, or a lot of the time, but Oh My Goodness, it HAS been happening Some Moments over the past several days. And, for that, I am grateful. I think that just having a heightened awareness toward the idea has opened me up to experiencing when it does happen. I found this book and it has "exercises?" that help awareness and "being present moments". You might consider borrowing from the library. Here it is...Check it out...

Also, we are traveling this weekend to visit our family in Seattle. Here's a picture of the roasted vegetable and grilled salmon dinner that they are making for us...

Yum!!!

That is a great book, it taught me a lot about stopping to appreciate the little things and finding just a few minutes a day to enjoy something like a pretty garden or a cloud in the sky. Really helps with the destressing too!

Spring 5% Day 6...Dinner with a view...

Friday, May 13, 2011

Today, my partner and I had dinner with a dear friend at a lovely restaurant about 25 miles up the coast. I love this place because of THIS view...

and THIS lighthouse!

Oh, by the way, the fish tacos with mango salsa are fabulous here.

I snapped this picture of our house when we got home. I love all the rhodies around the deck in their Spring finery and thought you might like to see them too.

Spring 5% Day 5...Cooking & Indoor Walking...

Wednesday, May 11, 2011

So today was a very rainy, cold day where I live. No walking the dogs on the trail today. So I did my walking inside!

I set up an area in my garage with floor pads that cushion the concrete floor very well. I have a TV/DVD combo set up and use this for some of my favorite indoor exercises.

Here is a selection of my favorites I use with the TV. I love the Nintendo Wii, Wii Fit and especially Walk It Out for Wii. My Wii plugs right in to the TV. I also love the Leslie Sansone Walk At Home DVDs you can see in the picture. I have begun using the Tai Chi tape and find it calming/interesting as well.

I walked 3 miles with my Wii Walk It Out today. I got my rainbow and have the picture to prove it!

Since it was an "indoors" kind of day, I decided to do some cooking. I made two recipes: Low Fat Crockpot Posole and Cilantro-Lime Salsa.

This is how the Posole soup began...

This is the Posole soup with some parmesan and brown rice for dinner. I am freezing the other portions to have at other times. YUM...

And, for a snack, the Cilantro-Lime Salsa and a serving of Trader Joe's Multgrain Tortilla Chips...Also yummy.

I noticed that when I was doing all the chopping, mincing, dicing, cooking and indoor walking that I actually was "in the moment" a lot. Who knew that cooking and hunting for rainbows could be meditative.
