I am so proud of you!!!!!! You did it. Now just to let you know it does not stop at one 5k....you will be hunting the computer for your next one soon. The beauty of any race is that you can go at your pace. And, yes for future races, it might be safer to head to the back a little more. I like races that have pacers so that you can get with a group who are guesstimating on finishing the race about the same time as you. And it was nice that you had you own cheering squad to be there with you for your first race. Thanks for sharing. Report Inappropriate Comment |

You ran a great time! Never mind those running faster than you, speed improves during time - probably they started running earlier, that's all. You'll get faster every month, even without pushing too hard. Comment edited on: 4/14/2012 11:59:48 AM Report Inappropriate Comment |

I wasn't sure that I was going to be able to do it. I mean, 5K Training has NOT been going well.
Week 1 - I trained 1 day.
Week 1 repeat - I trained 2 days
Week 2 - I skipped altogether. I didn't do any training.
Week 3 - I trained 1 day and then another day I just walked the entire time
And, now, it's week 4!! I am supposed to RUN (no walk intervals) for all of my training days! Day 1 is supposed to be 35 minutes; Day 2, 35 minutes; and Day 3, 40 minutes.
I have been stressing over it for a while now. Yesterday, I was going to do my training, but I just didn't. So, that meant that I just had to do it today if I was going to get in 3 days this week with breaks in between.
I really didn't think I was going to be able to do it. I have never run that long. The most I've run is 10 minutes straight. Soooo, I just determined that I would simply do my best. I thought my best would be 10 minutes and then walk for a few minutes and then repeat that until the 35 minutes were up. But, that wasn't my best. Something kicked in after about 4 minutes. It wasn't a cardiovascular struggle anymore and I had a lot more in me. So, I just distracted myself from thinking about the time and I just kept running and I made it! I made it through the entire 35 minutes without stopping!
I'm just so thrilled!!!
Now, I didn't get very far (2.7 miles). But, that was with a 5 minute warm-up walk and a 5 minute cool-down walk. So, I really did that mileage in 45 minutes. Soo.. if I want to finish the 5K in 45 minutes, I guess I'll have to amp it up. But, I'll know for sure after my 3rd run this week where I have to run for 40 minutes straight. If I can get very close to 3 miles in that time, then I know I should be able to complete the 3.1 in 45minutes.
But, that goal is just tucked away in the back back back of my mind. I really just want to be able to run the 5K without walking any. However long that takes is fine... um, well sort of. :-) LOL
Thanks for the support everyone!!

Well done! The structure of the 5K Your Way program makes Week 4, Day 1 a challenge; I didn't know I'd be able to run that long continually till I did it, either. And my time on that first 35 minute run was slower than I ended up running routinely. Part of that was caution and uncertainty of being able to do it; and part was that as I kept running, I became more fit and able to run better. Keep it up! No matter how slow you run, you're lapping the folks who stay on the couch. Report Inappropriate Comment |

Well done, True-ness! That's quite a jump and you did it! You've really hit on something with the distraction tactic - I struggle running on my own, but with someone else it's much easier, as you can talk and keep your mind off it! Keep at it and roll on the 5K! Report Inappropriate Comment |

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! My husband's a runner and I'm getting to the point where I'm going to start a running program also and we use the Marine Corps Running Cadences. My husband's a Marine and downloaded them for free on their website! They help keep a rythym going while you're running. Hope this helps!! Way to go!!! Keep up the good work!!! Any time I do my 5K under 45 minutes, I consider it a victory. I always follow this motto..."Running slow is not a character flaw, quitting is." Good Luck! You can do it! Report Inappropriate Comment |
