How to Get Your Mother on Your Side

Saturday, July 12, 2008

Ok, first I had connecting issues over the last few days -.- ...my router would only let me on to certain functions, I dont really know why!

But now...

I walked to the library, must have been 10,000 steps at least because that WAS for about 30 minutes and bonus: I was carrying a weight. 1.7 lbs....on my shoulder. Yes, my laptop. LOL

Was sweating nicely and its nice to be in the cool conditioning of this library, but it was worth it. I will walk home again.

Anyhewww.....to main topic. I have an an up and down relationship with my mother. I dont think she's completely on my side yet. But I'd like her to be it'd be much easier on me. See, I need her to understand the unique features of my career path- which is to say, unpredictable- and to be supportive of it. I am looking to work in the Nonprofit & Public sector...however's she's a thorough businesss woman:(. So, different mind sets, different goals. She wants me to earn. I want to earn too, BUT I want to derive meaning out of it, and if it means earning a little less then so be it.

So...mothers out there. How do I get her over?!

You can do like many people, who work for a profit business, but VOLUNTEER lots of their free time to a non-profit organization.

My advice is NOT to argue too much with your mother over something that is IN THE FUTURE. It just makes tension for you now. When I was in high school my parents were completely against me becoming a doctor and I made the mistake of discussing it with them and getting ALL of their negative reasons WHY I couldn't do it. My mother even took me to our family doctor, so he could TELL me why I couldn't do it. (His son became a doctor, after going to Washington U. Medical School in St. Louis. His 2 girls got married and were teachers.)
I should have kept my mouth shut and did what I wanted, but I learned that many years to late. It works the same way with a husband. DON'T TALK TO PEOPLE ABOUT YOUR DREAMS IF ALL THEY WILL DO IS GIVE YOU NEGATIVE COMMENTS.
