George's Journey to Recovery - Day 51

Sunday, June 15, 2014

Things are going well. George is taking more steps with the walker (although he still has to use the wheel chair most of the time). He actually walked half way up the driveway and back a couple days ago using the walker and with help from the therapist. They said he will probably need home health services for a couple more weeks and then we will be going to outpatient therapy.

He still has a lot of deficit on the left side but it seems to be getting better - just not quick enough for him. We are hoping that by September/October he will be mostly walking with a cane and maybe having to use the walker once in a while. Thank you all once again for your continued healing thoughts and prayers.

Seven weeks ago, the doctors at MaineGeneral had the kids and me say goodbye to George before they sedated him, hooked him up to the ventilator and put him in the helicopter to take him to MaineMed. Look how far we have come in just seven weeks. God has truly blessed us!

Graduation 2014

Friday, June 06, 2014

Great night last night. Went to the Messalonskee High School graduation to see my beautiful granddaughter, McKenzie and my handsome great-grandson, Codie, get their diplomas. McKenzie was the salutatorian and gave a great speech about having goals and dreams and never giving up.

And it was extra special because DH was able to be there also. He's come so far in 6 weeks. He's able to stand up and walk with a walker for short distances now. He still has left side deficit and, if he's not consciously thinking about his left side, it's like it's not even there.

Here is a picture of McKenzie, Codie, George and me.

Here is a picture of Kenzie and Codie taken 16 years ago.

Straw Bale Garden

Friday, May 30, 2014

We haven't had a garden for a couple years, other than our flower gardens. This year, after learning about straw bale gardening from a spark friend, we decided to try it.

We purchased 6 strawbales and while DH was in the hospital I set up the bales and started the conditioning process.

Conditioned for two weeks and then waited for a decent day so I could finally plant my seeds and seedlings. Took me a couple days but here's the result. The dark patch of soil on the top of the one bale is where I planted seeds.

And another view

Here's a view looking at the house also. DH is in the background sitting in his wheelchair filling the watering can with the hose.

And finally, this is one of the flower gardens in front of the house. I set out the plants first to get an idea of where I want them.

Neat! Thanks for taking the pictures! I can't wait to see how they look in another month! Like Erin said, I don't think that would work out here in the SW - our humidity is usually around 10% !

Thanks for sharing! Very interesting idea. I don't think here in Texas it would work. It's so hot and dry. you'd have to stand over it and water all day every day. lol Hope you get some great fresh home grown veggies all summer long!

George's Journey to Recovery - Day 10

Monday, May 05, 2014

Rough day today. George is having trouble sleeping at night and he was just exhausted today. He still did all his therapy but it took so much more out of him. Plus sitting in the wheel chair is hurting his tailbone but laying in the bed is giving him a terrible backache. And right now those are his two options.

It would be okay if he could move around a bit or shift onto his side, but because of the left side paralysis, once he gets into a position he's pretty much stuck there.

They are going to give him a benadryl tablet tonight to see if that will help him sleep, and I got him a new mask for his c-pap machine so they can hook him up with that tonight which will also help I hope.

I hate to see him in pain. He has enough going on in his body without having to deal with that.

Once again, please keep him in your prayers.
