oh, and.....

Wednesday, August 03, 2011

recently, due to stress and frustration my blogs have let's say changed a bit. humor isn't really there anymore. i wouldnt say that ive been phoning it in per se. more that im just more focused on getting to 195.

My blogs tend to be about
* my weight and how close to 195 I am
* # of vegetables
* exercise

that being said, over the past month there have been some concepts that have actually improved in my life. “Non-scale victories” in Sparkese.

Dairy:
I regularly eat 3 servings of low-fat dairy per day. Usually at least 1 of them is low fat plain yogurt
TD’s yougurt snack recipe
* 1c plain non fat yogurt (130-150 cal)
* 1/2c berries (usually blueberries or raspberries) (60 cal)
* 2T-1/4c nuts (almonds or walnuts) (90-200)

speaking of berries…..

Fruit:
usually 3-4 per day. Kiwi’s, berries, banana’s, cherries, nectarines. When September hits, I will probably start eating more apples, oranges, apricots etc.

Organized grocery shopping:
I don’t throw away a lot of food like I used to. I have a strong sense of how much food per week I need. The day I shop, my refrigerator has usually 2 cups of milk and a few pieces of fruit left. If I know that im going to eat out more than usual in the up coming week (like last week), I’ll by less perishables

These are things that I have taken for granted, but they are very real. Even if I have a few years to go on the vegetables and whole grains, im getting enough calcium, vitamin c and anti-oxidants. My refrigerator is far less cluttered. I feel less guilty about throwing out food (bc im throwing out less food)

Just wanted to share

    Having an idea of how much food you need in a week is HUGE progress! It is such a great moment when an 'side' accomplishment that you didn't plan on surprises you.
I appreciate your 2 vegetables a week and one minute add to each workout. I see you as a seasoned sparker that has mastered the art of setting goals and achieving them. And while your humor is fun, we enjoy see many sides of TD!

    You are doing excellent (even if your blogs aren't quite as humorous). I know that it's still there but right now you're so focused. Honestly, I think it's great.

    Happy to see you're doing well- congrats to you. I start better habits and then slither back into old routines that always beckon.
Have also been re-organizing my food shopping - there are things that I just don't buy cos I know I won't eat them with any moderation - full-fat cheese is my greatest downfall - so now they just don't go into my fridge at all.
I'm not great at fruit on it's own but berries and 0% yogurt go down well. Vegetables have never been a problem so they all get eaten up.
All of which sounds OK - except that if I slip up and have a couple of glasses of wine in the evening - my other downfall - I end up eating far more than is good for me - even healthy stuff has calories after all! - and the scales always show it!

I'm grateful to read about your efforts to change things and feel inspired to force some other changes on myself - on the wine front mainly! Thanks for posting - you made me think - as you so often do.

My worst weigh-in ever

Saturday, July 30, 2011

Last Week: 197.8
This Week: 202.2
21%
(+4.4)

I knew last Saturday that this wasn’t going to be a good one. Last week I had a really good week including a very light eating day on Friday and had a good weigh in (197.8)

This past week I totally overbooked evening get togethers with friends. I ate out at least seven times this week twice a day on a couple of occasions. Finishing the week last night with a huge late brazilian dinner that was loaded with salt.

Between an artificially good week last week and an extremely heavy eat out week. This is not a surprise. Nor is it a problem. I have few eat out plans this week

As far as my goals went:
Met the 2 vegetable goal (and had one additional one)
Worked out 12 minutes every day except Friday (because I do a double on Saturday, my goal allows for a day off if I need it). Goal met

This week:
* 3 vegetables
* 13 minutes of exercise a day

- td out!

    How well you know your system - almost spot on your prediction for today. Don't know how much consolation that is to you tho emoticon

A friend of mine said to me a long time ago (she was dieting at the time) 'Trouble with diets is you can't really join in anything' I knew - and know - exactly what she meant. It's hard to socialise however much we all like to say otherwise. Yeah - I know it's possible - just extremely difficult. My heart sinks when I get invites to supper - several times a week, like you - and it always involves alcohol - which I can refuse, of course, but do I? NOPE.

Chalk it up to a bad week and put it behind you. DON'T let it drag you down the slithery slope. Sounds like your intention is to resist.

Good luck - my fingers are crossed for you emoticon

197.8 (-1.4)
22%

2.8 pounds to go

Life has been very stressful this year and its really staring to take its toll on me. This week was especially tough. I’ll blog in more detail about it this week if I have the energy.

Exercise:
Exercised 11 minutes each day this week. There were a couple days where I didn’t feel like it. Knowing that it was just for 11 minutes made it doable. I’m on a two week streak of working out every day. Starting today it’s 12 minutes.

Weights/Kettlebells:
Except for the snatches, im up to 10 pounds for kettlebell exercises. I went up to 10 pounds on the free weights but am doing only six reps for each hand (for the extra minute I did two sets of bicep curls)

Vegetables:
I met my goal of eating 2 vegetables. Both of them on Sunday. Throughout the week, after that, I ate an additional 3. This will be the last week where my goal is 2 vegetables. Moving up to 3 per week (per week not per day) for August.

Funny Story:
After a really bad morning and early afternoon of bad eating, I was at the kitchen area of my workplace prepping a cucumber and a lemon juice drink. A co-worker comes by to get some water (English definitely not her first language). She observes what I am preparing. And says, “wow, that’s really healthy”. I thank her for the complement. Then she quips, “that’s why you don’t have any tummy”.

I thought it was cute. Don’t ask me why.

Summary:
* 12 minutes per day exercise this week
* 10 pound kettlebells
* 2 vegies this week goal
* No tummy

Td out!

    NO tummy huh? Excellent - and indeed cute. Have to whisper that I wish someone could say that to me LOL

Despite the bad time you're plainly having you should be proud that you have got a few steps closer to your goal - never easy and certainly not in times of stress. Congrats to you.

Love love love the 10 minute thing - truly think I'm going to stop trying so hard to do loads of stuff every day ( or indeed none at all cos it's all so daunting - and dare I say boring?) and follow your example of little - and doubtless concentrated - exercise and try to up it each week. As you say - sounds a lot more do-able.

Keep at it TD - you'll feel great when you make it and that's worth so-o much.

Hope your life sorts itself out soon . . .

Your 12 minutes a day of working out sounds like heaven. So doable and not overwhelming.

    Sorry it's all such a struggle - me too!! Tell yourself it's only 4-ish pounds and you CAN and WILL do it. Hope next week brings something below your 199.2 - the extra minutes should help.

Re voluntary veggie eating: I appreciate it's a joke but have to tell you, as a mum, that I wouldn't dare chase my very grown up boys about vegetables - they would certainly do the opposite! So all's normal in your world - and mine!!

Motherly emoticon

10 minute Kettlebell/free weight routine

Friday, July 15, 2011

a dear sparkfriend who I love very much has asked me in the past to describe my actual exercise routines. not having a regular one, i haven't done so.

for the past week Ive been rotating 10 minutes of cardio (machines/classes) with a 10 minute strength & kettle bell routine. the later is listed below. I jump right from kettle bells to free weights and vice versa.

- 2 handed kbell swings (35)
- bicep curls (12)
- 1 handed kettlebell swings (17 each hand)
- shoulder presses (12)
- 2 handed kettlebell swings (35)
- bent tricep lifts (12)
- kbell snatches (15 each hand)
- Bent rows (12)
- kbell cleans (15 each hand)
- chest press on Stability ball (12 reps)

the free weight reps are fairy slow. 12 reps last about a minute.

i started last week using only 5 pound free weights and 5 pound kettlebells. I've upped the 2 handed swings to 10 pounds. i want to progress very slowly over this next year.

This week, i will add another exercise for 1 minute. Not sure what yet. and will probably up the free weights to 7.5 pounds. Maybe go to 15 pounds on the second 2 handed swing.
