It's been a wild ride

Monday, February 27, 2012

Lots of changes since I was a really active Sparker. I've moved to the city from the country. Broken up - settled down. Lost a family member, dealt with serious illnesses. And, probably more. I was off line for at least two years. But, I'm back on the wagon again and feeling so much better already.

After a week of business travel, I returned home with a chest cold. I lost half a pound during that time period. I am now back in the swing of things. My exercise level was pretty good throughout. Now, Im getting the rest going again. The challenges I'm participating in for 2009's last quarter have really made a difference for me.

HFCS is poison

Wednesday, April 08, 2009

I have a lot of trouble staying away from sweets and staying within my calorie limits consistently. It seemed no matter how hard I tried I just couldn't pull it off and stick to it.
Last week while listening to the Derek & Romaine show on OutQ, Derek Hartley made some comments about weight loss that got my attention.
I believe that he's working on getting the body ready for summer like many of us. Derek said that he thinks the best way to lose weight and keep it off is to do three things: 1. No soda pop. 2. Eat all the fruits and vegetables you want. 3. No high fructose corn syrup.

I decided on Sunday that I was going to take one day and not eat anything that contained HFCS (to the best of my knowledge). Within 24 hours my food cravings decreased dramatically. It's been three days and I'm feeling pretty good about this experiment.
I am feeling far less hungry and more satisfied by what I do eat. The first day was hardest becasue I honestly felt like I was withdrawing from something.

Here is a link to an article I found about how and why HFCS has contributed to America's weight gain.

i look at hfcs as today's toxic waste in food, right up there with saturated fats....best to avoid as much as possible. thanks for keeping this info up front, though, because unless you read labels, you never know WHAT you're consuming! hope this finds you well and looking forward to spending some quality time with those you love during this holiday. much appreciated, many tx, nancy

    Great blog, topic and article.

I have seen this for myself. When I feel better, and when I don't. One day I hope to want to feel better, more than feeling rotten, so that I say away from what this artice implies.

Thanks for sharing. emoticon

Here's what's been up with me

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

Here's what's been up with me and I swear I am not making any of this up. On December 1, my Dad had a brain bleed from too many blood thinners Since then he's gone from a strong very active man to someone who could barely keep himself upright in a chair. It's been horrible. He had two brain surgeries - one for the original bleed and one 10 days later to remove a giant piece of his skull because of a staph infection. He had c-diff; yeast in the blood, multiple UTI's Between the infections and antibiotics he spent most of January asleep at a long term acute care hospital. He has aphasia and his right side has been affected by the brain damage. Though in the first week after the surgery he was talking a great deal and purposefully moving his right side pretty well. He was also starting to eat again. Everything went down the tubes with the second surgery and multiple infections. In his far weaker condition he was transferred to a sub-acute therapy in mid Februaury. He woke up around Valentines Day and wanted to know what happened to christmas. Oh and he also has regular high fevers of an unknown origin. Ten days later he was transferred back to the original hospital as a result of severe hydration. HELLOOO - he can't eat or drink, regularly sweats out high fevers, and has diarrhea most of the time. It didn't occur to anyone that he needed fluid in that there feeding tube??? So, I've been spending A LOT of time running around to various hospitals, researching treatment options and keeping everybody on the same page with where we are and where we could go.
In addition to all that - I have totaled my car, replaced my hot water heater (myself) and last Tuesday my furnace blew up. My brother and I fixed that. Yesterday a tire blew out on my new to me car and I broke a front tooth. My Aunt died on January 16 and on February 20th my uncle (her husband & my Dad's brother) had a massive stroke suffering irreversible damage. Since they didn't have any kids and we were their weekend kids we felt like taking turns staying with my uncle was the right thing to do. So, we added him to our hospital rotation until he died on the 24th. I spent two nights on a couch in his room at the hospital. By some freaky twist my Dad was in the room across the hall on his last trip. Aunt and Uncle were married for 49 years. But, it gets better - turns out he also had a girlfriend for 45 years. For the the funeral my aunt came in from TX and was my house guest for five days.
I spent over a week visiting various other sub-acute rehab centers with my step-mother to find a good place that was actually equipped to deal with my Dads issues (see above).
We moved him to a great place a week ago. But, guess what - over the weekend we made a trip to the ER for yet another UTI. (My Dad has to be transported by ambulance anyplace we need to take him.) On the bright side - he is eating again, doing therapy and was discharged back to rehab rather than admitted to the hospital. It's going to be a long haul. But, we're in it to win it.
You just can not have this much fun sitting home watching TV and eating popcorn. LOL

You have certainly had your hands full. You must be a very strong person to have dealt with all of it as well as you have. I hope there's so relief in sight for you and your family.

oh, my , talk about not being able to catch a break! well, my heart goes out to you and yours. my folks are aged, OK (knock wood), but they've both had their share of chronic health issues. so far, so good. please know that any time you need to reach out, feel grounded, want to bounce some ideas or thoughts off anybody, that's why we're here. l-c is the best when it comes to support. we may not be able to hold your hand and race to the hospitals with you, but we can send all positive vibes and whatever support you need your way. i'm glad your dad is on the mend. hang in there. here's to the stamina to be able to handle it all. yours in sisterhood, nancy
