New Orleans

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

I just came back from a meeting about our upcoming missions trip to New Orleans. I am nervous and excited about it. I am nervous about the unknown of what we will do and the area. I have never been in that area. Pictures of the area looks pretty odd to me. That makes me nervous.
I am excited because I like adventure and I know that this will be an adventure. I suspect that it will give me stuff to write about too.

I agree with Rhonda and the others. Please tell us more about the trip, where you will be, when you will be going, what you will be doing, and so on. I am excited for you and support you on this trip!
God bless you and Take Care.
I am praying that angels' wings surround you and keep you safe and free from any harm.

Thanks for the suggestion. I left a comment on Yatmama's spark page. I don't know how much time I will have for doing things. It sounds like the evenings will be free if I'm not too pooped out from work.

Bless you for your effort. Contact Missy, YATMAMA for guidance about the area. She'll be a big help and a good friend while you're there. -- Lou

Don't give up

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

I was posting a comment to someone here on Spark People and remembered a quote that I had read and found it in a book. So, I wanted to share it and some of my thoughts on it.

Lincoln's road to the white house:
Failed in business in 1831
Defeated for legislature in 1832
Second failure in business in 1833
Suffered a nervous breakdown in 1836
Defeated for speaker in 1838
Defeated for elector in 1840
Defeated for Congress in 1843
Defeated for Senate in 1855
Defeated for Vice President in 1856
Defeated for Senate in 1858
Elected president in 1860
The Complete Book of Sensible Sayings and Wacky Wit by Vern McLellan

I think this is a good example of the value of never giving up. If you over eat one day, dust yourself off and try again. If you miss your exercise session, dust yourself off and try again.

doctor's appointment

Thursday, February 18, 2010

I went to see my general practitioner today. I got a tetanus shot in preparation for going to New Orleans for a missions trip. I had a medical graduate who was doing a residency in family practice today. She was very nice and talked awhile with me. I found the wait to be too long but I like the fact that the doctors there talk to you.
She said that my blood pressure was a little high and asked me to come back for the usual cholesterol test. I will schedule a time to do that later.

Hi Tracy, Thanks for reading my blog today! I really appreciate you taking the time to stop and give me support. I really needed it. Again thanks for the kind words.

I read your blog and was wondering what your trip to New Orleans entailed? That sounds pretty ambitious and very caring on your part. Have you gone on mission trips before? My husband and I have taken youth on mission trips when we were in our 20's but never have gone just as adults. We always have wanted to, but now our health is not up to par to be able to that. So we just have to do things locally.

I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I will pray for both us to lose weight! When is the trip so I can pray specifically for you on the trip. Please keep us updated on your plans, etc.

God bless you and Keep you. Take care Tracy!
Peace, Love, Joy, Serenity, Hope, Healing, Laughter emoticon To You!

How are your plans for the trip to New Orleans progressing. I would be interested in details of your trip. Please share pictures with us.

BTW the intern can sometime be more detail oriented than your doctor. The doctor has to read and sign off on everything the intern writes and usually they want to impress that doctor who will be writing their evaluation.

Hope you have a great trip.

over eating and hunger

Sunday, February 14, 2010

According to the nutrition tracker, I ate 1,800 something calories today. Yet, I am hungry. I am not craving any certain thing. I am just hungry. My sister's husband who had the same dinner is feeling snacky too. Why am I hungry? I did some work today but really didn't walk much.
My period is ending today. So I doubt that it is hormones. Why am I hungry? I might try to find something to eat but it feels like I shouldn't be hungry today. Not after all of the stuff that I ate today.

I gave up too, in case you were curious. If I remember right, I had popcorn.

My problem is when I am NOT hungry I want to eat, maybe not some specific food, just something. I munch on Cheerios, M&Ms or anything that is not tied down. I don't understand this desire to just EAT. At least you are hungry.

Have nibbles, will travel. If you're at home, have frozen banana slices, frozen blueberries, or some heavily bran whole wheat bread in small, MEASURABLE pieces.

That said, I know that I allow my hunger after physical exercise to sabotage my diet.

Oh, almost forgot. WATER! 8 glasses is not just to keep you hydrated, (the amount of 8 "necessary" glasses is a myth) it's also to help your hunger. Use ice water, the colder the better: the cold water helps your stomach register hunger faster (which is why you shouldn't drink cold water for hydration).

You can do this and we can help.

Try to add a little more fiber into your diet. It keeps you full feeling longer. I am a vegan, so usually around midday I add in the Orowheat 100 calorie whole wheat thin bread buns with a morning star veggie chicken griller (80 calories) into my daily routine and also take a benefiber supplement in the morning. It REALLY helps cut down my cravings through the day! Good luck!!

I've been busy all day with helping to serve a meal at a local meal program actually. I finally gave up and ate some wheat thins and hummus. I suspect that I might be up to 1,900 calories. I suspect it is because I did more activity than I think or something about the fact that most of the calories in dinner was from ground beef which never seems to be the amount that it feels like I'm getting.

I've found that if I am not busy I'm hungry.

The good and the bad

Friday, February 12, 2010

The good?
I can see my lower leg muscles better when I flex them. It looks like when I was in cross country. Cool!
I managed to put in some time doing some editing on my writing. My pastor likes my lenten devotional. Another friend likes my Christian mental health devotional that I have been working on. He wants to share it with others. Cool, again!
Bad?
I didn't go for a walk today like I had hoped I would when I noticed that it was not as cold as it has been.
I didn't get up until noon.
I didn't eat many vegetables although I might make myself a vegetable platter to snack on tonight. Although, I haven't done my exercise today either.
I am so confused by whether or not I am losing weight. My weight goes up and down depending on where I am at one my cycle that I can't tell what is weight loss or just normal monthly changes. I know from reading Spark People that it is natural to gain weight before one's period but it is so annoying because it is hard to tell if I ever lose weight. I think I have lost some since last month's high (the day before my period, 183) is higher than this week's high (179.5 I think my period started a day or two after this measurement). I am starting to think of weight as a range rather than a specific number.

I HATE scales. I don't believe what they say. I try to measure my progress in inches on my gut (down from last notch on my belt to six) and how much energy I have.

At your weight you could be up or down a few pounds each day, depending not only on your cycle, but on how much salt you at the previous day. Or how much water you drank. Or whether you hit the potty before getting on the scale.

You're right: the weight is a range. It's a range that gets more precise as your body hits its optimum weight.

Baby steps. Deep breaths. It's. Okay.
