The Amazing Boab Tree, Australia.

Wednesday, May 22, 2013

Well, here we are bouncing down the Gibb River Road. It is one of the worst roads I have ever been on! Joanie is laughing at me because I have to hang onto the steering wheel real tight to keep my head from bouncing against the ceiling of the camper. Like she said, its a good thing our dishes are not china, we would have nothing left to eat off of.

Here are just a few of the things we saw. First is a fresh water crocodile. Ann warned us to be very careful because they even like to bit out tires. No way I will get out and change one if they do. lol

No way do I want to get anywhere near one of these babies. And I was told that they are very swift----And there are a whole lot of them, and then they have the saltwater crocodiles too.

I think I will let us put our minds on better things.

a dingo

echidna

a golden bandicoot

a King Brown Snake
which is a venomous snake----(oooh, be careful)

a quoll allof these we ran across in just one day of traveling and then there is the creeks to cross without bridges

And then I see it, how fascinating! It is called a Boab Tree.

This is a boab tree that was used as a prison. It is found just outside of Derby. If trees could talk I am sure it would make a best seller. lol Here are a few more

and look at this cute little thing sitting on a tree a cute little sugar glider. It has been a long day and we are getting close to our campsite for the night so I will bid you farewell.

One last picture to show some of the art that is made with the nuts from boab trees. Isn't it beautiful. Whish we had more room In the camper.

I think crocs are best viewed from a long distance or on satellite tv, as our venomous snakes. I'm told that they shy off from a noisy lot like we are. Well and good. I will shy away from them as well and keep a sharp eye out for them before I step anywhere outside the camper.
What a lot of beautiful animals on this trip, you've captured them very well. I think I like the baobob tree the best of the ones we've viewed. But I wonder why they have such an odd shaped trunk? The artwork on the seeds is outstanding. Loved the blog Gail emoticon

Did you know that the echidna is one of only two egg-laying mammals? The other is the duck-billed platypus. See what I learned in first grade!

Swimming With The Whale Skarks

Sunday, May 19, 2013

We are just finishing our first week on the road through Central Australia. Lots of highlights but the most amazing day was the day we went swimming with the whale sharks. They are huge, hence where the name comes from. They look like they have a poke a doted shin and it is rough as the roughest sandpaper. They didn't mind us being in the water with them. In fact I think they liked teasing us by brushing up against our legs.

whale shark

All the pictures except the last one are of my son in the water. (These are not virtual)

The coral reef is lovely and so fragile. But you can get some nasty cuts on it too so we had to be very careful. But the under sea life is so amazing. And the color. None of us wanted to leave

www.youtube.com/watch?v=QD8LBq21Ovo

Another highlight was seeing the huge sea turtles come on the beach to lay their eggs,

Other things we did is swim with the sea lions, and just yesterday we went to a Gorge that was so breathtaking, you just couldn't believe, It even made the Grand Canyon look sad.

This is the circular Pool we swam in at the end of our day.

Today we climbed Mt. Bruce

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tq9IBMD1sa0

And tonight we dine on a Game Tasting Plate for Two Sharing (40)
A selection of emu fillet, crocodile tail, kangaroo backstrap with trio of dips, caper berries,
salad, marinated vegetables and bread roll, you want to come and join us?

and then back to our campsite to relax and enjoy the campfire.

On The Road Again

Sunday, May 12, 2013

Today is the beginning of a new 6 week Trek traveling in campervans through Central Australia.

Joannie and I were in a hurry to get started so we left them all in the dust. We left Albany and are heading to Perth with a stop at the wood shed. That will be about 259 miles which will take about 4 hours driving time. Speed lihit is 110kilometer/hr which in America is 68 miles an hour. We have our CB radios on and my handle is Leadfoot (can you guess why?)

Two hours later we arrived at the Woodshed. There is so much to see here, and shopping. We went into the Sheds Cafe' They had a chicken and leak pie to die for and apple cake. It was so good. I got a real kick out of the sign that announced they were open year round except for the Friday before Easter, Christmas Day and Boxing day---well had never heard of boxing day and I know how America loves it's sports, my mind went directly to Sports. emoticon But then I remembered kangaroos and thought of I know, I was no where close.

I found out it was another day like Christmas, had nothing to do with sports or kangaroos.
And that many countries celebrate it. Including Canada and I am only about 70 miles from there. emoticon who would have thought.

Hopefully the trekkers will find us here. More Blogs will be following with amazing pictures. Later today if we are brave enough we will swim with the Sea Lions.

They better not try to kis me cause I don't like the smell of fishy breath!
and I leave you with this

LOL, yes Boxing Day is an important day here in Canada. Laughed at the idea of the kangaroos. Hope you are enjoying your cross country trek. I am filled with admiration Now, remember, that apple pie is not suppose to be a DAILY occurrence. Enjoy and have a great holiday. Are they celebrating Victoria Day down there this weekend?

Week 5 of the Bibbulmun Trail

Thursday, May 02, 2013

We have left Pemberton behind and heading 121 miles (195km.) to Walpole. The first day we follow the Warren River and through the Kari Forest. We stopped for lunch by the Cascades. It was really gushing today because of all the rain, but not nearly as beautiful as it is in the winter when the waterfalls I hear tell, are amazing. We sit beside the river sharing some cheese and crackers we brought from town.

We passed by The Warren River Bridge that is the longest, curved wooden trestle bridge
still in use in Australia. While in Pemberton we road the tram and had a wonderful time. It was quite nice sitting down and enjoying the scenery for a change. My poor feet needed a break.

That night at the Warren River Campsite, Joan let out a scream, she had spotted something staring at her. I ran to her rescue ,expecting to find a deadly snake or maybe another redback spider. It was a cute little quokka, it resembles a small wallaby

After Joan realized what it was it was all Bonbon and I could do, to keep her from taking it with us. Kecey came to our rescue and Joan went to bed pouting. By the next morning she was singing and I fixed some chip beef gravy and biscuits which we all enjoyed.

We made it into Northcliffe, and was able to enjoy a nice meal at Hollow Butt,. After getting pass the name, and it was the only place open in town we enjoyed a huge burger. ( how they got that name?) is beyond me because after eating that size burger there was nothing on me hollow, if you get my drift.----grin This is a very small farming community. I enjoyed my first mango smoothie in the form of flavored milks. It was very tasty. And as we were leaving we all were givin fresh eggs. Very hospitable of them and so we found a safe place to carry them in our back pack and would hard boil them when we stop for lunch. We are travelling through Shannon National Park and in many places the trail is covered with water. We had to stop and get our wading boots on and tredge through, in a few places I thought we were going to have to swim. And oh my the leeches---- Joan and I kept checking each other to make sure none lingered on us. Now, that was the pits!

Day 4
Today the wind blew, it blew so bad that we couldn't get a fire lit to fix breakfast so had to settle with a fruit and nut bar. As soon as we find a sheltered area we will get the cuppa ready. Sandra is having a tissy fit without her morning coffee emoticon and Ann wants tea.
The grounds are starting to be more grassy and sandy. as we near the dunes. I got my compass and maps out just in case. You just never can tell if the trail has changed some. With all this wind and sand anything could go wrong. OH, can you smell it. I can smell the sea. I love the ocean, the mist, the salt even the sea gulls. With promises of being on the ocean we keep going----we will get there ---- Everywhere we look is coastal wildflowers. How amazing the view is----Its like being in the wild wild west!
Kacey spotted a small ---- well you figure it out.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoduGti4G_k And with this I will say good nigh, and make sure our tent is zipped tight
