April and May have been rough months for my immune system. I always pride myself on never getting sick. Well, a nasty cold has caught up to me with a vengeance!
It all started when I went down to Atlanta to babysit my great niece. Everyone in that house was sick. I was surrounded by sickies!! After kissing that baby for 3 days, I caught it, too. For a few days, I felt like crap. Then....i started to feel better.
Just when I thought I was free and clear...I woke up early one saturday morning to meet my friends for a bike ride. On the way, my phone rang. When I tried to answer, I had absolutely no voice! Just a sqeeky little noise. This lasted for 2 weeks until I finally sounded normal again. Then...I started to feel better.
Just when I thought I was free and clear...last Tuesday evening, I started having pain in my right ear and right side of my throat. I'm a "It'll get better on it's own" kind of person. So, I waited, but it didn't go away. In 9 days, I leave to bicycle across the state of Nebraska. I started to think about being in the middle of nowhere with an ear infection. What a nightmare that would be. So, I went to the doctor yesterday. Well, no ear infection, but I do have fluid in it. She's hesitant to just prescribe antibiotics, which is a good thing. So, it's antihistamines for me to try to dry this out. I do have a back up plan, though. If it doesn't seem to be clearing, or if I get a fever, or if I'm afraid to leave on my trip with nothing, she said she would call in a prescription for antibiotics.
Then...I hope I will feel better!
I've really been struggling with my eating habits this month. I tend to try to feed the illness to make myself feel better. I think there's been a lot of that lately. I've still been biking, but then I come home and binge in the evenings. Hopefully, when my body gets back to normal, I won't be on the prowl for comfort food as much. I've been craving things like cheese, chocolate, bread and of course...ice cream. I look at the salad in my fridge and just pass it by. My brain doesn't think a salad will help. (Even though it would help much more than the other crap!) I think I'm just feeling worn down and tired from being sick for so long.
Let's hope I'm finally on the mend!

Well...for me it was a 3 State/1 Mountain Challenge. This is a yearly ride put on by the Chattanooga Bike Club that draws about 2,000 riders. This year, they offered more choices of rides. (100, 90, 62 or 25 miles) I did the metric century (62 miles).
This is all of the metric century riders lined up to leave. The longer riders left 45 minutes before us. (Some of them even finished before us!)
The weatherman said there was a chance of showers that may pass north of us, with a high temp of 85. Well, as we rode out of town, there were some scarey clouds overhead. Miles 12-18 were in a downpour!
This is my friend, John, with a view of Chattanooga and those nasty clouds.
Slick roads were a challenge on some of the quick downhills.
By the time we got to mile 20, the sun was back out. Yeah!
This is one of the well stocked rest stops.
We climbed Sand Mountain on the metric ride this year. The route had been changed from the usual one because of a bridge that was being repaired. This climb is more difficult, but I think this route was wonderful. Once on top of the mountain, the views are beautiful for 10 miles until you descend. The descent had ambulances posted about every 200 yards. That's a hint to slow down!!
This is a view of Trenton, GA from the top of Sand Mountain. The picture just doesn't do it justice, though.
I was coming down the mountain so fast that is moved my odometer sensor. Had to stop to fix it. That gave me a chance to snap this shot of the fast quys coming down. Glad I was out of their way!
We made it to the end in tact! It was a beautiful ride!!
This is my friend, Cindy, and me enjoying our adventure!

Here is a list of the top 10 reasons why I'm glad to be alive today:
10. Waking up to a kiss on the cheek as my husband left this morning.
9. Going on a great 42 mile bike ride in Northern Georgia.
8. 90 degrees and sunny! My kind of weather!!
7. Having the most wonderful friends a girl could have.
6. Watching a 3 legged dog run through his yard and fall on his face. Sorry, couldn't help but laugh!
5. Spending 2 hours comforting a friend whose husband is dying.
4. The glorious smell of the Little Debbie Snack Cake factory as I drive by. Mmmm...
3. Watching all of the little plants in my garden start to poke through the dirt.
2. The 'kisses' and tail wags I get from my dogs when I walk in the door. How cool is it that someone is so excited to see me?
and the #1 reason that I'm glad to be alive today......
Loving myself and recognizing the good in my life. (Is that two reasons? Oh, well.)

Oh, my! Where do babies get all that energy? I can't wait to get home so I can get some rest!!
Gabby and I had another busy day, finding our way around to shop. (Thanks goodnes for GPS!) We had a nice afternoon and she is a very good shopper.
She's just a little too small for biking, yet.
In the evening, I went for a trail ride with my two handsome nephews. It was only a 13 mile ride, but we had a great time.
I'm the short one in the middle!
While we were riding, I felt my throat starting to hurt. I was hoping that it was from talking too much. No such luck. I officially have the cold that everyone else here has. Darn! I almost made it through the season without being sick.
Tonight, I head home. I'll miss little Gabby, but it will sure feel good to sleep in my own bed!

On the way home from my ride on Sunday, I got a call from my nephew's wife. "Help! Our nanny quit at the last minute." They can get the baby into her corporate day care in May, but needed help until then. Well, I can't do the whole time, but I could give them 3 days.
So right now, I'm down in Atlanta...a full time nanny. Keep in mind that it's probably been 20 years since I spent a whole day with a 10 month old baby! Wow! All of those memories are flooding back. I forgot how difficult it is to do the simplest things when you have a little one. It's been a fun "bonding with Gabriella" time, though.
This is from one of our quiet times.
Yesterday, we took a long walk with Dagny, the dog.
I don't know if this walk tired them out, but I was beat by the time we came home.
In the evening, my nephew cooked us a delicious dinner. I learned a few new recipes while I watched him. After dinner, he took me to a yummy frozen yogurt store. It was a new experience for me. When we got to the counter, I noticed that he had a half of a bowl and I had a heaping mound! Oh, well. I enjoyed every bite. (I put fresh blackberries on it...so it was healthy! lol)
Today, we started off a little fussy, but I plan on taking an outing to Trader Joe's (there isn't one in Chattanooga) and a local bike shop. I think I'll find the nearest Performance Bikes, too. They have some good deals sometimes. I hope Gabby has as much fun as me or it could be a long afternoon. lol
Oh, by the way, all three of the people in this house have bad colds. I'm hoping I can get out of here without bringing it home with me!!
