Quitting 'Cold Turkey'... Why didn't I do this before?

Friday, January 06, 2012

Hello everyone!

Because of heart issues I am unable to use nicotine cessation aides such as Nicoderm, Chantix, not even the gums or lozenges... Basically, I was on my own with just the support of myself and my dear husband's nagging voice in the back of my mind.

For months I was trying to 'work my way down' to quitting. It, obviously, wasn't working since I never actually quit. In fact I found myself smoking more...

Finally, at approximately 11:30pm on December 31st, 2011, I dropped the last half of the last cigarette in my pack into an almost empty bottle of water. I QUIT COLD TURKEY!

emoticonI HAVE NOT TOUCHED ONE CIGARETTE SINCE! emoticon

I stopped getting cravings after day two had passed!

My BFF rents a room from us and she smokes. When she comes back in from smoking the smell is horrendous! I can't believe I let MYSELF smell that way too!

I know it's only been a few days but I feel FANTASTIC! Already noticing big changes.

My '1-Month Smoke-Free' reward is a new hair cut! I can't wait!

At the end of every week, I'll put the money saved from not buying cigarettes into savings towards a new lens for my camera after 1 year smoke free!

Congrats from someone who also quit cold turkey. I smoked for 23 years and today is day 70 of not smoking. Let me tell you, it just gets better and better. Food will taste better. Everything will smell better. Your lungs will feel better. Life as a non smoker is amazing. I will never ever go back. You have added decades to your life by quitting smoking. If for some reason you gain weight please do not be discouraged. You can lose weight but it is a lot harder to lose lung cancer. I gained 9 lbs in the 2 months that I quit smoking but I have lost 5 of the 9 lbs I gained and it was so worth it. Like you I can't stand the smell of cigarettes. I find it absolutely revolting. Congrats! Today for my reward for quitting smoking I am getting my teeth professionally whitened. :)

I'M STILL HERE!!! (Operation of the Heart #40)

Saturday, April 09, 2011

I'm just going to keep this short, sweet, and to the point!

I'm getting a S-ICD (subcutaneous-implantable cardioverter defibrillator) implanted on Thursday, April 14th. I'm so excited! What they originally thought was A-fib is actually Ventricular Tachycardia. That means I'm at a very high risk for sudden cardiac arrest (heart attack).

I am a 27 year old woman.

I have an enlarged heart (a little more than twice the normal heart size), CHD, and have had so far:

11 Open-heart surgeries
14 Electrocardioversions (defib shocks to get heart back into normal rhythm...was in the high100's to low-mid 200's heart rate)
12 Cardiocatheter procedures
1 Failed Cardiac Ablation
Numerous other heart-related procedures
I'm still not "FIXED", numerous future operations/procedures will be due as medical technologies allow...
AND I'M ONLY 27!!!

Averaged, that's approximately 1.45 heart-related procedures EVERY YEAR THAT I'VE LIVED.

BUT I'M STILL HERE!!!

Despite all that I've been through, I've found myself telling others that "I'm the most optimistic, positive person I know!"

I have never found myself wishing that I didn't have to go through it all. It has been with me my entire life and will continue to be. If I didn't have these issues, then I wouldn't be the person I am today! I wouldn't change ANYTHING that has happened. Keep your chin up, ladies! Hope, determination, and love for everyone & everything are the keys to living the life and finding the cure!

I'm still here!

Way To Go ! Some times it seems those that are challenge with phyiscal malfunctions, function better than healthy people that just sail along with little care of what others are going through ! Keeping you in my prayers for your succccessful next surgical adventure! I have a strange question.

I have been shocked back a few times and now I can't seem to wear a watch because the batteries blow out quickly. With-in a week or so! Ever have any electrical situations from your shockings?

I had a fist size tumor inside my heart and two open heart surgeries to remove . It grew back with in two weeks that was why I had the second surgery.
Let us know how your procedure goes and how your feeling !

Oh golly what a positive outlook on life............
My husband has had 5 heart attacks, open heart surgery,
been hit with the paddles many times, and lots of other
stuff....including a brain tumor and had gamma knife surgery
on that, and lung surgery, and more.

You and he should talk....you both have a great way of looking
at your situation........

God bless you and keep you safe throughout your life and what
ever procedures you have to have.......

Wow Honey! I thought I had a lot going on with a pacemaker implanted 6 days after double mechanical valve replacement 3 years ago. Also on a beta blocker for ventricular tachycardia. You are such an inspiration with your positive attitude! Whenever I'm feeling down in the dumps about the "tuna can" in my chest, I'll just head over to your cheerful page!! Best of luck to you on Thursday!!

Oh I love my Wii Fit. This is a great idea to keep track of your stats! I may have to start doing this too. :) I use Wii as my primary source of exercise - at least while the weather is cruddy.
