Revlon 5K Run/Walk

Saturday, May 07, 2011

Today the ladies participated in the 2011 EIF Revlon 5K Run/Walk. This is my second year walking with the group, and it is one of the 5Ks that I look forward to the most! It is always an adventure for us, as we take the Metro downtown instead of driving - and this year was no exception! We had great weather (cool and cloudy, but not cold), lots of company (it's usually about 50,000 people) and celebrities and entertainment. This year Halle Berry started the walk. The music in the coliseum at the end was very good! I also met up with an old friend who is a cancer survivor, who was walking with her mom. All in all it was a great day of exercise and fun!

How nice to meet up with all you gals! It was a great day for a walk, the weather was perfect. Each year I get a surge of power walking through the Trojans tunnel onto the football field. Missed seeing the Olympic torch lighted (no light this year) but still powerful.

I saw many In Memory, In support or Cancer Survivor plaquards. We wrote up a plaquard in memory of our co-worker Donna who passed this year, very emotional (I feel it now). But one I loved seeing was a man who wrote In Support...of the Ladies! How nice!

Definitely a high point of the year. Love the picture!

My Injured Wrist is Really a Pain! But I found something new because of it...

Sunday, April 10, 2011

Last Wednesday I fell at work and injured my wrist and knee...nothing major that required xrays, but I still had to go to medical and report the accident. It's a minor annoyance, except that Wednesday night I missed my workout with the team. Missed yesterday too, so this morning I was looking forward to joining LizzieCA55 at the Bodyworks class at the gym. This class requires lifting small weights, and performing weight-bearing exercises (like planks and pushups). I tried to do a plank at home this morning, just to see if my hand was any better - wrong move - I was immediately in pain again! Guess I'm not ready for that yet!

So I know that just because my hand hurts it doesn't give me a pass from cardio. I have cable with on-demand videos, so I decided to find a cardio on-demand video. I came across Billy Blank's Jr (son of Tae Bo founder Billy Blanks). He has several DVDs, including one called "Burn it Up!" I love the dance videos and classes (Latin Heat or Zumba, anyone???), so I thought I would try it. It's 55 minutes of cardio dance. Well, like his dad's Tae Bo, he kicks butt! But you're also having fun! He saves the Latin dances (my favorite) for last (so I had to tough it out to the end). If you have on-demand, I recommend trying it out! emoticon

I'm going to start singing the old Jackson 5 tune when near you. She's a dancing machine...

Shoreline Village

Saturday, March 05, 2011

The team workout moved to Shoreline Village in Long Beach today...we had a great walk in a beautiful spot! It was a wonderful day to be outside, and a pleasant change of location! Team members who couldn't make it missed a nice walk! We definitely should add this location into our rotation...

What was I thinking?

Saturday, February 19, 2011

This week I wasn't feeling well, so my only day working out earlier in the week was on Wednesday with the Seaside Sparkers. To make up for this, I decided to take the Spinning class at the gym. The instructor looked like she was a true cyclist (great legs), so I knew I was in good hands. She started the class asking who was new to cycling (at least 10 of us raised our hands), and she started explaining what we needed to do to adjust our bikes. We started off slowly (I'm thinking, I can do this)! Shortly after that, she took off! It was SO fast, and SO intense! My mind was racing!! I thought, I really made a mistake! But she was watching and told us not to give up and leave, but to just do what we could. I was reassured that there must of been others who had the same panicked look as I did. I hung in there, and was glad I did, because I managed to get a second wind halfway thru the class.

Then today I had scheduled an appointment with a personal trainer at the gym. I didn't want to miss the meetup with my SparkTeam, so I decided to keep both. Two laps through the mall with the Sparkers, and then on to my appointment with the trainer. When I got there, my original trainer was busy (I knew this would happen, because it was the gym's Grand Opening Celebration). I couldn't wait a hald hour or so for him to finish, so I decided to work with another trainer. Very experienced guy, with a degree in physiology, 10 years as a trainer and 3 years as a physical therapist. I've been working out with the Sparkers for a year and a half, so I'm thinking I'm in ok shape, right?? Wrong!! This guy kicked butt! The first 5 minutes were spent on the rowing machine (target of 150 rows in five minutes). I got 140...then on to floor exercises to work my abs and core! Planks (two types), and from there my legs started to cramp...don't know what I was thing! Spinning class and walking 3 miles before meeting with him! It's all good though - I learned several things from him (the proper form for a plank, how to use a couple of weight machines properly). All in all, glad I kept the appointment! And to top it all off, as I was leaving, another guy at the gym was flirting with me! I took it as a compliment...all in all, a good couple of days working out! Wish I had the extra cash for continued personal training, but it's pretty expensive...so I will try to focus on learning good form on my own!

I'm amazed that I'm consistently exercising, but thanks to my wonderful SparkTeam I stay motivated to do my best! Thanks ladies!! WooHoo!

Ladies, get ready to sweat!!

Wednesday, January 26, 2011

So we're counting down to Saturday, and I'm asking myself - why did I pick Zumba as the group activity??? I've finally mastered a couple of the dance moves (merengue, salsa), but the more advanced steps (reggaeton for example) escape me...the one thing that I can definitely say is that we are going to be challenged, and it's going to be a lot of fun! I can hear the laughter now...

So get ready team...wear lightweight clothing, bring a towel and lots of energy - we're going to have a great time!

The laughter may out pace the dance.

I'm looking forward to the challenge.
