Returning to Focus on My Health Again

The last two years of being a caregiver/trustee have created a huge amount of stress in my life. Just recently, the stress has lessened and I am beginning to feel like I have energy again. The struggle of maintaining good healthful eating requires energy because I am pushing against a 65-year history of habits that don't promote that. Now, with renewed energy and the support of my friend LOSE4HEALTH, I am beginning again.

I always struggle with fear when I enter a healthful eating commitment. It's probably fear of failure, since I have experienced that many times. I know I don't need to let that stop me this time, though. I learned that from SP in the years when I was focusing before my mom became ill. So, I'm starting again now and think I will make progress slowly. Slow progress is fine with me. I don't need to be thin for good health; I need to eat moderately and well and exercise moderately and regularly. It's simple, really, but I often have demons that thwart my efforts. I know I will fall from my plan, but I also know I have gotten up and kept going before. I can do that now too.

So, thank you, Diane, for your recent email. Also, thank you Chris (the Spark Guy) for providing support for all of us through SP.

  I guess its like lighting a candle. I just mentioned I need to pay attention because of my health and it turns out you heard me. I lit a candle. Now my candle glows brighter through your words and spirit and courage. God is kind. Thank you dear friend.

Stage 3 - Motivators

I'm working Stage 3 and this blog will be my developing list of motivations that help me stay on track.
1. I like to feel my clothes sit comfortably on my body without binding at the waist, especially.
2. I like the feeling of standing tall that I get when I'm eating well and feeling good about myself.
3. I like it when my body feels rested and, therefore, aches less.
4. I like feeling good about what I'm doing - honoring myself and my body.


Three Meals - The Habit of Health

Late in December I was thinking about a 90+-year-old man in our church who has always seemed so healthy to me. I've known him for 22 years and he is like a rock, steady, steady, steady. During coffee hour many years ago, I offered him a cookie and he said, "No thanks. I never eat between meals." His wife, Mary, followed immediately with, "Yes, he never does."

This has stuck with me for all these years sitting quite close to the surface of my brain and floating into my consciousness several times a year. Now that I am working hard to become more healthy myself, Larry's comment is constantly with me, though until recently I did nothing concrete with it.

Then, late in December I was telling my friend LOSE4HEALTH about Larry's comment and I casually said that I thought that might be something to work on in 2009. After completing my message to her, I thought, "Why not right now?!"

So, I have been eating three meals a day since that day. In spite of often hearing snacks are okay, I am committed to no snacks and have decided that if/when I feel hunger in the afternoon, I will not die if I don't eat a snack. I can wait until dinner. Surprisingly, I haven't died.

The greatest feeling comes from this decision, a feeling of great freedom. No one needs more than three healthy meals a day. No one needs to spend any time thinking about more than three meals a day. The time I do spend planning my meals on the SP Nutrition Tracker is brief and to the point.

Another goodness has come from this decision. When I prepare my meals, I am conscious that it will be necessary to eat well, eat enough good food to tide me until the next meal. So, I eat healthy hearty meals with some fat, whole grains and plenty of fruits and veggies.

I don't like spending lots of time thinking about food. So, this is a direct, orderly and entirely new way of thinking about food for me and it feels very good, indeed. Plus, it is working!

I have printed a motto for my kitchen cupboard: THE HABIT OF HEALTH - THREE MEALS. I want to develop the Habit of Health by always eating three meals a day, no more, no less.

  I've also just begun the 3 meals a day plan. I could never keep track of what to eat and when to help loose weight so I just decided to go back to my mom's old way for 3 times a day. I eat until i'm full not bursting and i'm getting thru my day just fine. My secret trick is when 3pm hits around the office, I drink a cup of water and walk to hallways. If that does not help, i hit a hot cup of green tea to stop my sweet cravings. It's paid off! 4lbs this week :)

2009 Goals
