Motivational Poster: Finish

Thursday, August 02, 2012

It is a curious thing about runners. In most other sports after the other competitor has won, the game is over. But in running ...

First run in 10 days

Wednesday, August 01, 2012

Ten days ago I ran in Chicago in the Rock 'n' Roll Chicago Half Marathon. That was Sunday. Unfortunately, Saturday morning, I was too impatient to wait for another elevator (the first one was overloaded) since they were S.L.O.W. and I took the stairs ... 10 flights down.

No Problem!

Until I reached the lobby. Last step. Rolled my ankle.

I ran on Sunday, knowing full well I would be slower. Add in the heat and the best I can claim is I finished. But my ankle was not killing me.

Even so I babied it. I have not run since LAST Sunday. 10 full days. Strength training. Yes. Swimming. Yes. Lots of RICE. Yes.

Today I took the chance. I turned in a respectable time for a training run and little pain. I think I am ready for my next races.

Two in six days. Riley's Rumble in Boyds, Montgomery County, MD ... suburban DC ... on Sunday 5 August. Then Ben Moore Memorial in Annapolis, MD on Saturday 11 August.

I can do this.

Nike: Find Your Greatness. Jogger

Tuesday, July 31, 2012

If you are watching the games you have probably seen this commercial from Nike. Nike is not my shoe, I run in Brooks, but I think this video inspires.

This is Nathan. He is 12 years old. He's from London, Ohio. Greatness is not beyond his reach, nor is it for any of us.

Go Nathan.

Some random thoughts about the Games

Sunday, July 29, 2012

The road racing was fast. I mean scary fast! 5:45 for 250km (155 mi). That's 27 mph average for almost 6 hours, more than 150 miles! Wow! That one crash looked positively scary and he got back up and hit the street. The medical car checked him out on the run. Woof!

I might want to watch these swimmers more closely. Their form is great. I love it! And the bodies on them. The arms on the women are amazing! Lochte flips a 350 pound tractor tire for warm ups and lifts chains -- it's lift a variable weight lifting exercise.

The gymnasts are also impressively muscular. It really brings home the importance of strength training for other sports.

These female gymnasts are so so so young! They are little girls! I know it's nothing new, but it doesn't make it any less -- well, child abuse.

Some of the sports included in the Olympics: Golf. BMX Cycling. Badminton. Beach Volleyball. Sailing.

And they dropped Baseball and softball?

Some of those are ESPN3-worthy sports. BMX, Beach volleyball. Badminton maybe on ESPN8 - The Ocho.

Some suggestions for future games: Darts. Bowling. Urban Biathlon. Tug of War. Jump rope. NASCAR. Dodgeball. Mixed Martial Arts (UFC). Ballroom dancing.

Actually tug of war used to be an event. And Ballroom dancing would be a good summer cognate to the couples ice dancing.

Urban Biathlon? Sure! (Serious suggestion) Far more accessible than the winter Olympic Biathlons where cross country skiing and riflery are combined, an Urban Biathlon is riding a bicycle 10 miles, stopping at a batting cage for 20 pitches or a driving range for 20 balls, and then repeating 4 times, for a total 50 mile ride and possible 100 hits. Lowest time and highest number of hits wins. It doesn't involve introducing guns into the summer games.

A good summer biathlon like the winter biathlon could involve cross country running and archery.

Of course we COULD have an urban biathlon with runners on city street with a 9mm tucked in their waistband.
