11 Scientifically Proven Ways to Boost Metabolism

Monday, May 14, 2012

Ok, technically it's 11 Scientifically Proven Ways to Boost Metabolic Rate. But you know what I mean. But that's the title of this article: tinyurl.com/7of3roz

Our size, gender, and age all factor into our metabolic rate, but there are also ways to independently control its speed. And the faster our metabolic rate, the more calories we burn off, making that Krispy Kreme breakfast no longer such a big deal. (OK, the donut probably still isnt the best idea.)

1. Sleep! How many times do we need to be told this one? And yet I still wake up after only 4 hours.

2. Drink green tea. Full of anti-oxidants. Zero calories!

3. Amp up workout intensity. You get in a groove, but you need to move more so it doesn't become a rut.

4. Dont skip breakfast. Come on! Mom told you even as she was sipping on nothing more than a cup of coffee breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

5. Pump some iron. Lean muscle has more blood flowing in ti than fat. So the more muscle you have, the more fat you will burn even at rest.

6. Gulp some H20. Aids digestion, burns calories. And when I have a headache, first I try water. Usually I don't need anything else.

7. Spice things up. Cayenne pepper. Make it hot

8. Squeeze in some cardio. Swim, Bike, Run. No you don't have to try a tri, but you can burn calories doing more cardio.

9. Eat wisely. Eat those power foods. Proteins. Fiber. But don't skip carb or fats. It's all important. HAve the right balance.

10. Grab a cup o Joe. Coffee is bad for you no, wait. Now coffee is good for you. Yeah so have some hot Joe.

11. Laugh a lot! Laughing is good for burning calories and it improves your mood.

Jesse Ruben -- We Can

I swear I am not going to make it a habit of glomming off YouTube, but I heard this on Sirius XM CoffeeHouse (31) on the way home from Mass this morning. Verse 1 got my attention. Verse 3 gave me goosebumps.

We Can by Jesse Ruben

A lot of people doubted me
They laughed in my face
They said there ain't no way
I would finish that race.
But I kept my head down
And laced up my shoes.

I ran a marathon
That no one thought I could.
I didn't always want to
But I said that I would
And I learned a lot
Of what I can do.

It doesn't matter if they don't believe,
It doesn't matter if they do not understand
Because every dream I'm trying to achieve
I can, I can, I can.
I can, I can, I can .

So make a list
And do not make it brief
Write down every single wish
And every little thing that you want.
Don't sell yourself short.
Don't ever hesitate
If people turn you down,
Do not settle, do not wait,
Don't ever turn around
Because you're almost there,
I swear, I swear it's yours.

And all that matters Is that there's no regrets.
It doesn't matter if they do not understand,
Because everything you want you have not gotten yet.
You can, you can, you can.
You can, you can, you can.

Right now on this planet
There are things that we can fix,
A lot of people going hungry,
A lot of them are kids
And it's so unfair.
They're scared and all alone.
Wars are being fought
Over land and over God
And we need a different plan
Because I think that we forgot
That we're all the same.
We're just love and blood and bones.

It doesn't matter if they think that we're wrong.
It doesn't matter if they do not understand
because every obstacle we need to overcome.
We can, we can, we can
We can, we can, we can

It doesn't matter if they think that we're wrong.
It doesn't matter if they do not understand
because every obstacle we need to overcome.
We can, we can, we can
We can, we can, we can
We can, we can, we can
We can, we can, we can.

Some Motivational Posters

Saturday, May 12, 2012

Runners World's RW Daily Blog has these great funny "motivational" posters every week.

Yes, always remember, it's survival of the FITTEST, not the FATTEST.

A sad, sad truth, it seems.

Hunnnnnnh. It's six o-fracking clock and I WANT? to go running for 20 miles ... What am I CRAZY?????

... so we went out to dinner.

The boys all went to see a baseball game at Camden Yards ...

It was kind of like a date. Friday night. Clear sky. A little cool and slightly breezy, but we ate out in the evening air. It was a Mexican restaurant that has been there since I can remember but I have never gone. Why not? Basically because while I love love love Mexican food, She(WMBO) always has turned her nose up at it.

Then surprise! She picked this restaurant and it was excellent. They had a marvelous Trucha Asada -- Grilled Trout. It was not drenched in butter or covered in fat like so much Mexican food is.

Here is the victory: I went into a Mexican restaurant determined to live. A lifestyle change doesn't mean that I stop living. Yes, yes, yes I piled on the points. But only tonight. I was with a beautiful woman on a lovely evening eating delicious food.

I had a good night.

... and a certain amount curmudgeon-hood.

Whenever I go to a restaurant and everyone else is having dessert, I ask for fresh fruit. And I usually get it!

Suppose I stuck to the menu? I'd probably have the cheese cake like everyone else and I would miss out on the fresh berries with a balsamic reduction. All I had to do was ask, can I have fresh fruit for dessert?

I have learned not to be afraid of hearing the word NO.
