Well, I have been ill,

Saturday, November 12, 2011

I have been ill fighting some kind of bugs from a UTI, cold, and dental work. My system has been under attack which makes the MS symptoms increase. I had to cut down on the workouts with more rest days in between them and shorten the length of them.

I continue to workout. Today was a 2.15 mile walk. It was all my muscles could do before they turned off.

Recently I tried out The Bioness L-300 plus for foot drop and Quad weakness. I am posting my impression of the device for anyone who has these issues.

I tried out the New Bioness L300 plus for the quadriceps. The rep was kind enough to come out to my house. I already owned the bioness L300 for foot drop for several years. It still works great. It has been a very good investment for me.

The bioness L300 Plus is a muscle stimulator for the quads. It can be set to stimulate the quads or the hamstrings - where ever the muscles are weak. However it can't do both at the same time. I did try the hamstring mode, but I it made me more unstable.

I needed it more for the quads. My thighs get the feeling like they want to buckle going down hills and at other inopportune times. I have a steep hill in the backyard that over the years has gone from being easy to walk down to looking threatening. The rep first applied it on one thigh along with the bottom part for the foot drop. The two parts can be used separately. I used both due to my needs.

Going down the hill before it was turned on made my heart pound with fear. I slowly walked down with great difficulty and concern over falling. Then the rep turned it on at the bottom of the hill. I climbed up and down the hill like a goat when it was on. My stability increased as well as the ability to climb up and down the hill. My speed increased dramatically. I didn't need my nordic poles to go up and down the hill where as before I needed it. It worked great.

Then I had her apply the other "good" leg with the unit. My walking balance, strength, speed improved even better. It improved my overall gait. My good leg tends to overcompensate for the bad leg, so it fatigues easy. Even though technically I don't have foot drop my heel catches on the ground off and on. The bioness resolved this issue and helped to strengthen my quad so I had more stability. Even though this leg does not officially need the bioness when used with the other set, it made me feel like my legs weren't as heavy, like I could do more. It gave my muscles the feeling of strength. I had more confidence in my walking.

The rep had me do squats with the bioness on and off. When they are turned off I could not go down very far and felt unstable. With them on, I could go down much deeper and my muscles felt more activated or turned on. It felt like the exercise was more effective.

The next two days after trying the device my quads have been sore, weak feeling. I believe I ran up and down the hill so many times (she told me to stop, but I over did it) that I wore out my quads. So I have been recooperating.

I am very impressed with the improved bioness L300 plus. I would love to have a set of them. They run in the $4000. range. I feel I really need the pair and an additional unit for my good foot. One day I hope to save up for them. Insurance usually does not cover the units. They are well worth the investment to keep your body walking and moving.

For me to get the set for both thighs it would be $8000 or more and I would need the foot drop portion for my good leg, which I think runs an additional $8000 ish.

Currently the only people who get medical coverage have an incomplete spinal injury. However, the rep said if you appeal many times sometimes you can get the insurance to approve. She said the people who get coverage fight and there neuro will also fight for them.

The only thing I can do is pray that someone makes it possible.

Oh, if you want to participate in a trial with these, there is one going on she said in Long Beach or LA area. She wasn't sure of the area but she said that you have to travel to the facility every 4 weeks or so.

It certainly would be nice if you could get these devices. Maybe people could do a fund raiser for you in your area to help with the cost.

Keep on moving when you are up to it.

I am NOT TOO LAZY !!!!

Friday, October 28, 2011

My eyes are heavy, my legs are full of lead, I don't feel like moving. I want to SLEEP. It's not that I don't want to move. It's fatigue. Yup, I got plenty of sleep last night. Why does MS rob one's energy? I have read that it affects the level of ATP or adenoline triphosphate in the mitochondria. Sigh. I want more Darn IT !!!

I am experimenting with supplements that increase it in my body, but that takes time.

IS MS just an excuse or is it a cause ??? Well partly both. It makes it easier to make excuses as to why its easier to sit rather than move. It's something I fight each day.

Medically I know it exists. I feel its effects on me everyday. It does affect my walking, balance, cognitive skills, speech, and so much more.

I think I will surf spark people for inspiration.

Today I had to wait until noon to start moving. I couldn't stand up without help. I CHOOSE HEALTH, OVERCOMING LIMITATION, DISABILITIES, ILLNESS with lifestyle changes.

My first workout is a one mile walk. I won't let MS be an excuse to sit around on my BUTT !!!

I am STRONGER THAN MY EXCUSES !!!

My procrastination to get started and health issues will not stop ME !!!

For If I were to stop I would not make PROGRESS.

I will Succeed. No excuse will keep me from reaching my goals.

I got it done. Now I am all smiles. Later on when my energy is re-cooped I will do more. That is how I do it, in chunks, little by little, step, by step.

If you don't get started today, when will you get started ???

Is there really a reason not to start NOW ???

Just for FUN !!!

Just for FUN !!!

Some Last thoughts !!!

YOU HAVE GOT TO CREATE UNSTOPPABLE ENERGY FOR YOURSELF !!!

Great blog-you obviously look for motivation! And yes, MS sure is real...I have it too. Also real are procrastination and fear of the effects of pushing too far, both of which I also have. I saw this on an MS site and I like it: "I have MS but MS does not have me!". So we will wear our cooling vests and consider that part of weight training, and use walking sticks for balance and to increase speed a bit, and we WILL spark on! I take MSM supplement as well as vitamin d and a multivitamin and I take a daily dose of Lyrica-keeps some of the nerves quiet for a while :). Good luck on your health venture!

Man, that is a conundrum...MS must make everything more difficult, but then again all the more reason to move, I would think. I battle with depression and something that I have found to be really helpful is rebounding. I get up and hop right on it in the morning...really makes my day so much better. Is that something you could do? They do have balance bars you can add to them if you feel you need a little more stability. All I know is that bouncing up and down on my rebounder (I have a bungee rebounder) just makes me have energy and makes me feel much happier. And then my day is just easier.

Thank-you for your blog!

Don't let your medical conditions get you down. I have a few medical conditions that get in the way of my workout from time to time, and I must admit, it gets discouraging at times. Listen to your body, if you're fatigued rest. I used to try and force myself to workout when I was fatigued, but found out that it's not good for my condition. So instead I do something calming like meditate or listen to music. Remember, rest is a very important part of living a healthier lifestyle too. emoticon

I don't know what "adenoline triphosphate in the mitochondria" means. But, my theory, regarding why MS causes fatigue is that our brains need to work harder to make connections insdie to help us do many things that are "regular" and "easy" for others.

My MS fatigue feels like a brain fatigue, because my brain is tired. Although it affects my body, it feels like it's actually my brain that is too fatigued to send the correct messages to tell my body what to do.

Is that what "adenoline triphosphate in the mitochondria" means?

And, yeah. I know what you mean about excuses. You really do awesomely well, BLOOM, at motivating yourself to exercise, even with your disability and the limitations it creates. Although I likely have fewer physical challenges than you do, I often don't even bother to look for the motivation to exercise, let alone find it.

Way to go!

I DIDN'T FEEL LIKE IT

Thursday, October 27, 2011

I did it ANYWAY. Today was a battle of MS weakness affecting my whole body and DETERMINATION. It was so hard to walk and balance this morning. I needed my cane, then the intensity of the symptoms decreased.

DETERMINATION WON !!!

Along with Consistency.

HABITS pushed me to continue on my journey.

In all, it was very eventful. I made much progress today. My ACHIEVEMENT was Step Aerobics and walking when I was fatigued. The combination kept me moving for 1 hour 10 minutes. A new record !!! 8153 steps in ONE HOUR 10 Minutes !!!

It's been about 20 years since I did step aerobics.

It's never easy. JUST DO IT !!!

This Impressive saying will leave you with something to think about, ponder, and apply to your life. Enjoy.

I will sleep well tonight.

I've always noticed when I take "I don't feel like it" and turn around it do it anyway....it always turns into "Man that feels good".

Great motivational quotes & pics.
